Pakistan Army on August 2 resorted unprovoked firing on several forward posts in Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch Districts, prompting the Indian army to retaliate, reports Times of India. A defence spokesman said "Pakistani troops have been resorting to unprovoked small arms firing in forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishnagati, Mandi, Balakote and Pallanwala sectors since 2130 hours tonight." While Krishnagati and Mandi sectors fall in Poonch; Balakote and Pallanwala are in Rajouri; and Jammu Districts respectively. Army troops guarding the LoC took positions and retaliated effectively resulting in exchange of firing, which was still going on when last reports came in, the spokesperson said, adding, there has been no loss of life so far

Continuing ceasefire violations and firing mortars targeting civilian areas and forward posts of the Army along the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistan Army on August 9 fired at Balakote sector of Poonch District, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said Pakistan Army fired 60 mm mortars and resorted to firing with small and automatic fire arms in entire Balakote sector targeting civilian areas and Army posts. The Indian troops retaliated. Exchange of shelling and firing continued for about two hours. However, there were no casualties or damage in the shelling and firing on the Indian side.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Army on August 9 fired 120 mm Brand-DTT heavy mortar shells in civilian areas and forward Army posts in Sabzian sector of Poonch District causing damage to several houses, reports Daily Excelsior. “This was for the first time this year that Pakistan Army had fired 120 mm Brand-DTT mortars on the LoC, which were capable of causing extensive damage if struck on the target,” sources said, adding the heavy mortars didn’t hit the Army posts or houses but exploded in isolated areas. Nearly a dozen houses of the civilians were damaged after being hit by splinters of mortar shells and bullets of heavy firearms. The Indian side responded effectively to silence the Pakistani guns. “There were no casualties of Army or civilians in the heavy shelling and firing,” sources said.

While Pakistani troops fired from automatic weapons and 120 mm mortar shells in Sabzian sector, there was firing of small arms and 61 mm mortars along Balakote sector. After ceasefire violations at Krishna Ghati in Poonch, Bhimber Gali in Rajouri and Pallanwalla in Jammu on August 12, Pakistan army started heavy mortar shelling and firing on the Indian positions targeting forward Army posts and civilian areas in entire Balakote sector of Poonch District on August 13. In worst ever shelling by Pakistan Army for the past several years, six civilians including a Sarpanch (head of Panchayat, village level local self Government institution) were killed and over 20 other civilians injured as Pakistan resorted to unprecedented shelling with 120 mm and 82 mm mortars directly targeting civilian areas in Balakote, Manjakote, Sabzian, Mandi, Mankot, Hamirpur and surrounding sectors in Poonch and Rajouri Districts on August 15, reports Daily Excelsior. The deceased were identified as Sarpanch Karamat Hussain (52), Master Abdul Rehman (42), Mohammad Amin (18), Mohammad Sheraj Khan (17), Moin Khan (10), Nusrat Bi (35) of Balakote sector in Paoonch District. Over 20 civilians have been injured in mortar shelling in Balakote and Sabzian in Poonch District and Manjakote in Rajouri District.

Separately, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 16 Corps Lieutenant General RR Nimbhorkar on August 20 held high level review of escalated tensions prevailing on the LoC in twin border Districts of Rajouri and Poonch with top Army Commanders and described Pakistani shelling targeting civilians in the border villages as “highly unprofessional”, reports Daily Excelsior. “Our troops came across a big group of militants, which was trying to infiltrate into the Indian Territory from Balakote sector under the cover of heavy shelling and firing by the Pakistan Army. Despite being engaged in the shelling, our alert Army personnel spotted the intrusion bid and foiled it. The militants fled back to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) from where they had been launched,” the GOC 16 Corps said.

Pakistani troops pounded civilian areas and forward Army posts using 60 mm mortar bombs and automatic weapons in Balakote and Sabzian sectors along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch District on August 23, in the latest incident of ceasefire violations, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said Army troops guarding the border responded effectively and appropriately silencing the Pakistani guns. “There were no reports of any casualties or damage on the Indian side in shelling and firing,’’ sources said, adding shelling and firing was also reported in Sabzian sector for a very brief period last night (August 23). There have been 52 violations of the border ceasefire agreement by Pakistan in August and over 245 ceasefire violations this year so far, sources said.
