Addressing a joint press conference at Awantipora in Pulwama District, Lieutenant General AK Bhatt, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army’s Srinagar-based 15 Corps, said that “Today is a very special day for all our security forces. We have killed eight terrorists in two operations…” he said, adding that the third operation was still going on in Kachdoora village – where eventually five militants were killed. “Two terrorists responsible for killing Lt Fayaz when he was visiting his family on a holiday had been eliminated”, said the GOC. Fayaz, posted in the Rajputana Rifles in Akhnoor, was abducted and killed by militants in May last year (2017), when he had gone to attend a family wedding, and his body was found the next day. “I appeal to youths not to get lured by weapons and Pakistani backed propaganda. Anybody who uses weapons will be dealt with in the same manner we dealt with the terrorists today”, said the General. He said Sunday’s was the biggest anti-militancy operation in the Kashmir valley in a long time. Also, a senior Police officer said that at Dialgam, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anantnag made a special effort to persuade the militants to surrender. He summoned the family members of the two militants in a bid to persuade them to give themselves up. “Instead of surrendering, one of the holed up militants opened fire and the security forces had no option but to kill him. The other one we caught alive. Operations are carried out most professionally by the security forces”, he said.

Four persons, including an Army soldier and four civilians were killed and more than 60 persons were injured during an anti-terror operation and subsequent civilian protests at Khudwani area of Kulgam District on April 11, reports Daily Excelsior. Police, Army’s Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cordoned off Khudwani village on April 10-night after inputs about presence of three militants in a house. As the Security Forces (SFs) launched house to house searches, militants fired at them leading to a gun battle in which a soldier, identified as Sepoy S Gunakar Roy was killed and two SFs personnel were injured. People in large numbers gathered at the encounter site and pelted stones at the SFs leading to ding dong battles during which four civilians were killed and over 60 injured. The civilians who were killed at Khudwani have been identified as Sharjeel Sheikh (25), Bilal Ahmad Tantray (16), Faisal Illahi (14), Aijaz Ahmad Palla (30), Mohammad Siraj. Several houses and shops were badly damaged in the gun battle as SFs used explosives to blast off the houses where militants were hiding. However, they called off the operation after firing stopped and no militant bodies were found in the debris of the houses. As soon as the operation was called off, three militants appeared from the debris of the houses and fled away. Earlier, SATP had reported that at least a soldier and a civilian were killed in an ongoing encounter in Kulgam District on April 11. Meanwhile, thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of the slain civilians. They were raising slogans against Government and SFs. A Police spokesman said that three civilians were killed in “crossfire” while investigations were underway to ascertain death of Palla. “In the said encounter three civilians identified as Sarjeel Sheikh of Khudwani, Bilal Ahmad Tantray of Frisal and Faisal Ilahi of Melhoora Shopian who were injured in the crossfire have also succumbed to their injuries. Moreover, 12 persons have also received injuries in the process and are being treated at different hospitals. They are stated to be stable”, Police said. The Police also requested citizens not to fall prey to any speculations and rumors which are intended to disturb the peace. “J&K Police seeks your cooperation for maintaining peace,” the spokesman added. The killing in Kulgam sparked off massive protests amid clashes at several places in Kashmir Valley, adds Daily Excelsior. Students of Kashmir University, NIT Hazratbal, Islamic University Awantipora and the Central University of Kashmir staged protests against the killings. Students of schools and colleges protested in several parts of Valley including Handwara, Bandipora, Baramulla, Sumbal, Islamia College Hawal, Degree College Ganderbal, Degree College Pulwama, Women’s College Srinagar and Degree College Kupwara and Pampore. Other than clashes at Khudwani and its adjoining area, the reports of stone-pelting clashes were received from Sumbal, Bandipora, Handwara, Baramulla, Drangbal, Pulwama and Shopian. At Baramulla, Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station Baramulla Khalid Ahmad was hit by a stone at his head during protests. He has skull bone fracture and was shifted to SKIMS hospital in Srinagar. Separatists in the meantime called for a complete shutdown on April 13 against civilian killings and peaceful protest after afternoon prayers. “The way Kashmiris are being pushed to the wall through a merciless spree of brutal killings demands from us to be united and collectively raise our voices against this brutality,” a statement issued by Hurriyat said. The leadership appealed people to “remain ready for coming on to streets and roads if necessary to counter these nefarious designs”.

A local politician of South Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Patel, was killed and his two security guards were injured in a militant attack at Rajpora in Pulwama District on April 25, reports Daily Excelsior. Militants fired upon the vehicle (Scorpio JK01M- 0099) of Patel at Rajpora Chowk critically injuring him and two security guards. Another security man present inside the vehicle, however, escaped unhurt. The injured security guards have been identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Zargar and Bilal Ahmad Mir. Patil, a resident of Dangerpora Shadimarg later succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital and Security Forces (SFs) launched massive manhunt to nab the assailants. Patel was associated with Congress and had later joined ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Interesting, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who is also president of PDP, referred to Patel as Congress activist while condemning his killing. An official statement issued here said: “Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has condemned the killing of a local Congress activist of Pulwama, Ghulam Nabi Patel who was killed this afternoon at Rajpora Chowk by unknown assailants. The Chief Minister has expressed sympathies with the bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul.” The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president G A Mir, on the other hand, called him PDP activist. The Congress party said that Patel had joined PDP in 2014 at Gupkar in presence of former Chief Minister and party patron late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. “Now see the height. PDP does not own their men,” they said. Former Chief Minister and National Conference working president Omar Abdullah criticized the PDP and Congress for what he said disowning Patel, saying: “just call him NC worker so his death is not in vain”. However, family of Patel expressed surprise over PDP president and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s statement for disowning him by calling him a Congress activist. “He (Ghulam Nabi Patel) vigorously campaigned for PDP’s senior leader Dr Haseeb Drabu,” said Patel’s brother Ali Mohammad. “It has come as a shock and surprise to us that he has been disowned by PDP and the statement of disowning him has come none other than party president and Chief Minister of the State Mehbooba Mufti,” he
