Protest and clashes between protesters and Security Forces (SFs) amid curfew continued in various parts of the State for the second consecutive day in which 40 persons, including SF troopers, received injuries, reports Daily Excelsior on March 8. Apprehending trouble after the Friday prayers, authorities announced imposition of curfew in entire Srinagar city (Srinagar District) and major towns of Kashmir valley. A Police spokesman said, “Miscreants pelted stones in Batamaloo and Zakoora in Srinagar (District), Khanpora, Cement bridge and Palhalan in Baramulla (District), Narbal crossing in Budgam (District), Papchan in Bandipora (District), Cherkoot Lolab in Kupwara (District). Police exercised maximum restraint chased them away.”

Over 130 persons, including 77 Police and Para-military personnel, were injured as many protesters defied curfew after Friday prayers on March 8, reports Daily Excelsior. Police sources said, “At around 65 places there were stone pelting incidents while at around 40 places there were peaceful protests.” A Police spokesperson said that miscreants pelted stones at Soura in Srinagar (Srinagar District), Dewan Bagh in Baramulla District, Shopian (Shopian District), Anantnag (Anantnag District), Awantipora and Qaimouh cities in Kulgam District, Sopore (Baramulla District), Kupwara (Kupwara District), Bandipora (Bandipora District) and Handwara (Handwara District). Additionally, during the past few days 103 vehicles, including 20 civil, 35 Police, 45 CRPF and three Government suffered damage at the hands of miscreants in stone pelting at various places in areas falling under Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian. It is worth mentioning here that these protest erupted after a protestor, identified as Tahir Latief Sofi, was killed in alleged firing by Army on March 5. He was participating in a demonstration called for one Kamran Mudarsi who was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his University Hostel’s residence in Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) on March 2. Fellow residents of the hostel found Mudarsi’s body hanging from the ceiling of his room. These protests clubbed with the newly formed coordination committee Mutahida-Majilis–Mushawarat’s (MMM) call to hold demonstration in support of the demand for return of body of 2001 Parliament Attack case convict Mohammad Afzal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013.

In the aftermath of March 13 fidayeen (suicide) attack at the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Bemina area of the Srinagar city (Srinagar District), one person was killed in alleged firing by CRPF troopers, reports Kashmir Times. The incident happened when some Security Forces (SF) personnel were rushed to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) for donating blood to the victims of the fidayeen attack. SF personnel came under attack while returning as locals pelted stones upon their vehicle. To disperse the violent crowd, CRPF troopers allegedly opened fire in which two persons were injured. Later, one of them, Altaf Ahmad Wani, reportedly succumbed to injuries at SKIMS. Daily Excelsior reports that a total of 10 persons, including six CRPF personnel and four civilians, were in the suicide attack. As reported earlier, five CRPF troopers were killed, and seven persons including, five CRPF troopers, were injured in the attack.

In the mean time, normal life was affected on March 13 because of the general shutdown called by Muttahida Majlis-e-Mashawarat (MMM), the recently formed amalgam of various separatist and religious groups in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), reports Greater Kashmir. Minor clashes amid partial shutdown were reported from the Guru Bazar, Habba Kadal, Kani Kadal, Rajouri Kadal and Chota Bazar areas of Srinagar city (Srinagar District), while complete shutdown was observed at Magam, Dhobiwan, Kunzar, Druroo, Chandilora and Tangmarg areas of Baramulla District. Violent protests and incidents of stone pelting were witnessed late in the evening in several areas of Pulwama (Pulwama District).

Terrorists in the morning of March 13 (today) stormed a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Bemina area of the Srinagar city (Srinagar District), killing five troopers and injuring seven others, reports The Times of India. The two terrorists, who carried out the attack, were also killed. "Five jawans have been martyred and seven have been injured," an unnamed senior Police officer told reporters at the spot. He said it was not clear whether there were two or three terrorists who hurled grenades and opened indiscriminate firing at the CRPF camp. "Two fidayeen (suicide militants) were neutralised and searches are going on," the officer said. He said the group affiliation and identity of the terrorists killed in the incident was a matter of investigation. Two civilians were also injured during the attack, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said while confirming the attack. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Police in the evening of March 14 arrested a Pakistani militant, identified as Riyaz Ahmad alias Abu Talha, who they suspect was an associate of the two Fidayeen (suicide attackers) who carried out the earlier reported attack on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in Bemina locality of Srinagar on March 13 and killed five of them and injured 10 others, including four civilians reports Daily Excelsior. Inspector General of Police, Abdul Gani Mir confirmed arrest of a Pakistani militant from Chattabal area of Srinagar but didn’t confirm his involvement in the Fidayeen attack at Bemina. He was arrested from the house of one Ghulam Nabi, a visually challenged person and a pistol which he had concealed in a wardrobe of the house was recovered from him. Sources said that Abu Talha travelled to Narbal in the Northern outskirts of Srinagar around 15 hours before the Fidayeen attack took place at Bemina and received the two Fidayeen. “The duo stayed with him in Chattabal for the night and in the morning he dropped them at Bemina where they carried out the attack”, Police sources added. The sources said that the two Fidayeen who were killed at Bemina were Pakistani nationals and had infiltrated into Kashmir valley recently. “They were in Pattan area of Baramulla District before they came to Srinagar on Tuesday night for carrying out the attack”, sources added. Police besides recovering medicine of Pakistan make had recovered two AK-47 rifles, five AK magazines, 60 AK rounds, two Chinese pistol, two pistol rounds, one UBGL, three UBGL grenades, four hand grenades and two pouches from the encounter site. Police have by far arrested four out of a total of 15 persons allegedly involved in the March 13 Bemina (Srinagar District) fidayeen (suicide militants) attack, reports Daily Excelsior on March 15. Bashir Ahmad Mir, resident of Uri area in Baramulla District, a former militant and currently working for the security agencies, was picked by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Police hours after the attack at Bemina. His mobile number was listed in a diary and a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card recovered from the dead fidayeen after the encounter. Sources said that Mir had helped the fidayeen to enter Srinagar city from North Kashmir. Based on Mir’s inputs, as reported earlier, a Pakistani militant, Abu Talha alias Zubair Ahmad, was arrested from Chattabal area of Srinagar city (Srinagar District) on March 14. Police further arrested one Pradeep Singh, a Government employee of Kansipora (Baramulla District), accused of providing logistic support to the fidayeen. Singh was on radar of security agency for past several months for his alleged links with militants. The fourth arrestee, reportedly arrested from Shaheen Gunj area of Srinagar city (Srinagar District) for his alleged role in providing logistics, is a former militant from Palhalan area of Pattan in Baramulla District.
