An armed group of suspected Maoists looted a passenger bus and 10 trucks at Loyar Khola in Chitwan district on November 3. On the same day, five civilians were injured in a bomb explosion detonated by the Maoists near the Pushpanjali hotel in Gothalopani Bazar, the headquarters of Bardia district. Maoists have also reportedly restricted journalists from gathering news at five different VDCs including Chubang, Mahad, Ranmamaikot, Pwang and Purtenkada in Rukum district on November 4.

Suspected Maoists detonated a powerful bomb within the premises of the state-owned Employees’ Provident Fund building at Sundhara in the capital Kathmandu, leaving 38 people including some laborers and pedestrians injured on November 9. On the same day, in another powerful bomb explosion, two employees were injured and the office building was damaged at the Internal Revenue Office in Bhaktapur. According to media reports the blasts are suspected to be Maoist retaliation for the arrest of their Kathmandu leader ‘Prashant’ last week.

During a press interview in Kathmandu on November 18, the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) spokesperson, Deepak Gurung said that at least 2,700 Maoist insurgents were killed and nearly 500 more were suspected to have killed during security operations since the breakdown of the ceasefire on August 27, 2003. Further he said that 163 army personnel died during the period and added, "our intelligence was aware about the escalation of Maoist activities in those areas but we didn't anticipate that Maoists would gather for offensive at that scale." Also, Gurung said the RNA led joint command of security forces could provide adequate security during the proposed elections, if the Government desires. Meanwhile, in the same meeting, Home Ministry spokesperson, Gopendra Bahadur Pandey, said that over 1593 civilians, 6500 Maoists, 1265 policemen and 254 Armed Police Force have died since the Maoist insurgency was launched in 1996 in Nepal.
