Reports quoting eyewitnesses claimed an estimated 3,000 insurgents were involved in the attack. They had surrounded the area and trapped the SF personnel, reports said. Less than 12 hours before the Sandhikharka-attack, the insurgents attacked the Bhiman Area Police Post in Sindhuli district, around midnight on September 8, killing at least 49 policemen and injuring 21 more. Latest reports held that the dead bodies of at least 50 insurgents were dumped in a nearby river following the midnight attack. Reports even claimed that the insurgents had shot dead policemen from the rear even after they had laid down arms and surrendered. Also, the insurgents fired at two military helicopters carrying SF reinforcements to Sandhikharka and partially damaged two of them, thus forcing them to land elsewhere.

The Defence Ministry said, in an attack on September 8 night, Maoist insurgents in Sandhikharka, headquarters of Argakhachi district, western Nepal, killed 68 security force (SF) personnel and a civilian. Also, the insurgents have reportedly abducted an estimated 100 SF personnel. The Maoist insurgents, too, reportedly faced heavy casualties, but their number is not known, when reports last came in. Counting the Maoist toll has been further rendered difficult as they have reportedly carried away their dead colleagues. Further, they destroyed all government office buildings in Sandhikharka, besides, setting on fire many government vehicles. Unconfirmed reports claimed that 85 SFs were killed in the attack.
