Malik Naveed Dehwar, a main leader of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), and three others were killed in two gun attacks on Arbab Karam Khan road of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, on July 6, reports Dawn. Police said that Malik Naveed Dehwar was passing through Arbab Karam Khan road along with his guard and another person when four men on two motorcycles opened fire on the vehicle from two sides. In his 30s, Mr Dehwar hailed from Mastung. He was a member of the BNP-M’s central council. In 2013, he contested the election from the National Assembly’s Mastung-Kalat constituency on a BNP-M ticket, but lost.

The District Police Officer (DPO) of Qilla Abdullah, Sajid Khan Mohmand, and his security guard and driver were killed and over 10 other people, including five Police personnel, injured in a suicide blast in the border town of Chaman in Qilla Abdullah District of Balochistan on July 10, reports Dawn. Sources said that DPO Sajid Khan Mohmand with his team was on an inspection of the Eidgah area of Boghara road when the suicide bomber riding a motorcycle blew himself up after hitting his vehicle. Sources said Sajid Khan Mohmand died on the spot as the suicide bomber hit the vehicle on the side where he was sitting. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has said that the country is making steady but sure-footed progress in making Pakistan a terrorism and extremism free country with full backing of the nation, reports Daily Times on July 13 (today). “Pakistan is much safer than before. Peace has been restored in FATA and adjoining areas. Normalcy is returning to Pakistan’s economic hub of Karachi, where business community and common people have started to benefit from it,” he said while addressing a seminar on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).Similarly, he said, law and order situation in Balochistan had improved significantly and there was a much bigger focus on socio-economic development in the province. “Let me assure that the army and law enforcement agencies are vigilant and are determined to provide foolproof security to CPEC. No one should have any doubt about our commitment to the project. We will make CPEC a success... come what may,” the COAS said.

Police officials said that militants opened fire on a Police patrolling party in the area. In response, the Policemen engaged the suspected terrorists, whereas, a heavy contingent of Police and other law enforcement agencies immediately reached the spot. After the encounter, the three suspected terrorists were found killed, said Police officials. A cache of arms and ammunition, including five-kilogram of exclusive material were recoovered from the possesion of the slian militants.

Against the backdrop of a renewed wave of targeted attacks against senior police officers in Balochistan, Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa arrived in Quetta on July 14 and reviewed the security situation prevailing in the restive province, reports Dawn. The Army Chief assured the people of Balochistan that their prosperity would remain his priority and his focus was on bringing them on a par with the people of other provinces. COAS says the Army will continue to perform its duty with people’s support. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Army chief was apprised that “terrorists in desperation” were targeting law enforcement agencies and soft targets since there had been a phenomenal reduction in targeted killings on sectarian grounds in the province.

The two soldiers were patrolling the highway on a motorcycle in the Killi Dawoodabad area when assailants opened fire on them and fled, the Levies sources said. A search operation was launched in the area following the attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Balochistan's higher education secretary, Abdullah Jan, who was abducted from Quetta on March 15, 2017, returned home in the evening of July 26, reports Dawn. Unidentified gunmen had picked the official up from Sabzal Road area of Quetta at gunpoint when he was on his way to work. He was kidnapped when the 6th national census was underway throughout the country and a large number of Government employees, including those from the education department, were participating in the process. "My father has safely reached home," Attique Khan, Jan's son, said. He said his father's physical condition was not good. It is not yet apparent whether the official was recovered by Security Forces in an operation, or set free after payment of ransom. No group claimed the responsibility for his abduction.

Separately, Police and SFs arrested 12 suspects following raids carried out as part of Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad in different parts of Balochistan on July 30, reports The Express Tribune. Eleven of them were arrested during a joint operation conducted by Frontier Corps (FC) Balochistan and local Police in the Killi Deba area of Quetta, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. According to the ISPR, the joint Police-FC ‘sanitisation’ operation was launched in parts of Quetta late July 28-night in view of the recent spate of target killings and bombings in the provincial capital. “More than 3,000 security personnel and 208 teams – also comprising 208 women personnel – are participating in the operation,” Quetta FC Commander Brigadier Khalid Baig said. More than 190 weapons, along with caches of ammunition, were also seized during the Killi Deba raid, ISPR added.
