A suicide bomber rammed his motorcycle into a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) bus, killing seven officers of the Pakistan Air Force and three civilians on the Faisalabad Road in Sargodha in Punjab province on November 1-morning, according to Dawn. At least 28 people were wounded in the attack. The bus was reportedly carrying PAF staff from the Mushaf Mir Airbase to Kirana Ammunition Depot when the bomber targeted the bus at approximately 6.45a.m. Sources said that 50 PAF personnel and civilians were in the bus. "It was a suicide attack and the target was the bus which was carrying the air force officials and civilians," military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told AFP. The District Police Officer Waseem Ahmad Khan Sial informed that the head of the bomber had been found and appeared to be a local. It was the second suicide attack in Sargodha. Country-wide crackdown on the anti-emergency protesters continued on November 5 and hundreds of protesters were arrested by the security forces, reports Daily Times. Police used baton-charges to control demonstrations by lawyers at courts in Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Multan. Several opposition activists, lawyers, civil society members and some journalists were arrested. In Lahore, lawyers clashed with police at the Lahore High Court building. About 250 lawyers were arrested. In Karachi, rangers and police surrounded the Sindh High Court building in Karachi, denying entry to journalists, litigants, lawyers and even some judges. Riot police baton-charged protesting lawyers and arrested up to 100 outside the High Court and district courts, including Barrister Salahuddin, son of former Chief Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed. Clashes between civil society activists and journalists and the police were reported from the Karachi Press Club. Lawyers also staged protests outside the district courts in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The former Prime Minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairperson Benazir Bhutto has called upon General Pervez Musharraf to step down as president, saying there is little possibility now of her working with him even if he doffs his uniform, according to Dawn. She made the demand on November 13-morning as the Punjab government initiated a massive police action and arrested nearly 100 PPP workers and senior leaders from various parts of Lahore to foil her party’s planned ‘long march for democracy’. The PPP claims that more than 400 workers have been arrested. Talking to reporters by telephone, Benazir Bhutto said Gen. Musharraf had lost the confidence of people and he was incapable of resolving the crisis. “I’ve tried to work with him and negotiated with him to ensure a smooth and peaceful transfer of power to people through fair, free and transparent elections. But he has made a mess of everything,” she said. Benazir, who was detained on November 12-night for seven days in Lahore by the provincial government under section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order to prevent her from leading the party’s march, also said that she was trying to forge a united front of all opposition parties on a one-point agenda of launching a joint struggle for democracy and rule of law. “I have contacted Jamaat-i-Islami Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Awami National Party leader Asfandyar Wali and some Baloch leaders, including Hasil Bizenjo, for a united front of the opposition. I’m already in contact with Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader Nawaz Sharif and will also contact Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf chief Imran Khan,” she said in reply to a question.

Two suicide bombers on November 24-morning simultaneously targeted military personnel and installations at two different places in Rawalpindi, claiming over 32 lives and wounding 55 others, according to The News. In the first attack that occurred at 7.55 am (PST), the suicide bomber while trying to enter the Hamza Camp, the main office of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), from the out-gate hit the staff bus of the agency. The blast, which occurred 200 metres from Faizabad at the Murree Road, killed over 30 personnel on the bus and among the guards standing at the main gate. The attacks took place at the same time near the GHQ when another suicide bomber blew up his car after hitting an Army check-post when he was intercepted while trying to infiltrate into the high security zone. Two Army personnel were killed while one was injured.

Former premier Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan on November 25 after eight years of exile and vowed to contest the general elections, Daily Times reported. Talking to the media after arriving in Lahore from Medina at 6.25pm (PST), he said all decisions regarding participation in elections would be made on the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM)’s platform. He said the APDM would participate in the elections if General Pervez Musharraf withdrew the emergency declaration he issued on November 3 and released opposition members who had been jailed. “Everything that was done must be reversed and drawn back completely… You must have a level playing field for fair elections,” he said. He said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would never welcome ‘turncoats’, adding that he wanted to unite the PML and the PML-N. He said he had made no deal with President Musharraf. “I haven’t met any Pakistani government functionary over the last eight years, although there were a lot of overtures from the Pakistani side to meet me and to talk to me,” he claimed. On Gen. Musharraf, the former Prime Minister stated that “He is not a legitimate president of the country. I do not accept that, not at all.” He added that there was “no question” to him ever agreeing to a power-sharing deal with Gen Musharraf as president and himself as prime minister. A spokesman for Gen. Musharraf told CNN on November 25 that there was no agreement or understanding with Nawaz Sharif. Thousands of PML-N workers and leaders had earlier broken through police barricades at the airport and welcomed Nawaz Sharif and his family. Nawaz said the arrested PML-N workers were proof that he had no deal with General Musharraf.

President Pervez Musharraf on November 28 handed over the command of the army to the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Dawn reported. He passed the baton of command to Gen Kayani at a ceremony held in the Army Hockey Stadium, close to the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. “Although I would not be in uniform tomorrow, my heart will continue to beat it as it has been my family since I joined it at the age of 18. It is a sad moment for me to bid farewell to the army after serving it for 46 years. This is life and every good thing has to come to an end,” Musharraf told the army top brass and government leaders at the first-ever public ceremony organised for the change of command.
