According to AFP, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have asked Norway to arrange urgent peace talks with the Government to prevent Sri Lanka from sliding back into war after 31 people died in a week of violence. LTTE said they told Norway’s top envoy in Colombo, Hans Brattskar, that there should be immediate negotiations to maintain a tenuous truce in place since February 2002. "Our commitment to the ceasefire and the peace process remains undiluted and what we request now is to urgently arrange a high-level meeting between the parties…," said the outfit’s political wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan. In a report on their official website, the LTTE said only face-to-face negotiations could "bring about normalcy and avoid confrontational postures between the civilians and the occupying military."

The upsurge in violence came as LTTE political wing chief, S. P. Thamilselvan, warned that there could be more clashes with the navy unless truce monitors made arrangements for the outfit to have safe passage using sea lanes. He claimed the LTTE had repeatedly asked the Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission (SLMM) to make arrangements for them to travel over land and sea under an “agreed understanding reached earlier.” “Early action ... would avoid recurrence of such incidents,” he told the SLMM. Meanwhile, the LTTE denied allegations that they ambushed and killed the 15 navy sailors. “The Liberation Tigers were not involved in any activity that breaches the cease-fire agreement,” spokesperson Daya Master told The Associated Press by telephone from Kilinochchi. According to him, “There is no connection whatsoever between us and this attack.”

India and Sri Lanka on December 30 reiterated their support for — and commitment to — the peace process in the island nation and agreed that an enduring solution to the country's problems could emerge "only through internal political processes that promote consensus and reconciliation," according to Hindu. Both countries condemned the recent cease-fire violations and said these "could undermine the prospects for peace in Sri Lanka." A joint statement which seeks to catalyse a broader economic relationship between the two countries, issued at the conclusion of the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse's visit to Delhi, said the two nations agreed that the environmental implications of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project had to be studied and monitored and action taken to mitigate them if any.

Security forces detained at least 900 people in a major house-to-house search in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo on December 31 as part of a major hunt for Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres, a top police officer told AFP. Large parts of the capital were sealed off for seven hours during the sudden operation carried out by 2,000 heavily armed soldiers and 2,400 policemen, Colombo’s Deputy Inspector-General Pujith Jayasundara said. “We are holding the men and women detainees at eight centres in the city and they are being released as their identities are established,” Jayasundara said. The pre-dawn operation occurred in Colombo’s Wellawatte area where minority Tamils are concentrated, said residents who were not allowed to leave their homes while the search was underway. Sri Lanka is currently under a state of emergency, which gives sweeping powers to police and security forces to arrest and detain suspects for long periods without trial.
