Italy recognised the dangerous potential of terrorists by arresting those with alleged links to the LTTE, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Italy, Hemantha Warnakulasuriya told Adnkronos International (AKI), Daily News reports. In an interview with AKI in Rome, Warnakulasuriya said the Italian government had taken the lead in Europe in clamping down on anyone who tried to extort money from the Sri Lankan community to support the outfit. Italian authorities in June arrested 28 suspected LTTE sympathisers in nine Italian cities, including Rome and Naples. Warnakulasuriya said others had been arrested elsewhere in Italy. “The Italian Government supports Sri Lanka in its fight against terror agents. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is a terror organisation whose tentacles spread all over the world,” he told AKI, adding, “It is an organisation against civilisation and democracy. The Italians realised this and prosecuted those involved.”

One month later, Mylvaganam was granted bail and returned to university, where he continued to pursue a master's degree until being returned into custody last week. Mylvaganam served as a vice-president of the university's Tamil Students Association in 2004. He and four other Ontario men have been charged with one count each of conspiring to provide material support and resources to the LTTE.

The military on December 7 claimed to be advancing on multi-fronts into parts under LTTE control in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts, The Hindu reported. The Defence Ministry said, “Pushing an end to the 30-year-odd terrorist cause and the most prolonged, single handed counter terrorist campaign in South Asia, Sri Lankan security forces are advancing in multi-fronts with 7 offensive divisions.” It claimed that troops were now positioned in “kissing distances” to the outer defence lines of the LTTE’s administrative heartland and main garrison township at Kilinochchi. It said formations advancing from west of Paranthan, Adampan, west of Iranamadu, Terumurikandi, Kokavil, Kanakarayankulam, Puliyankulam, Northeast of Olumaduwai and Alampil had caused great damage to the LTTE leaving “scores killed and as many injured” during the past few days. “Security forces have now liberated a total stretch of 48 km along the A-9 Jaffna-Kandy trunk road, from Kokavil to Omanthai. This is the first time since 1998 that security forces have gained control over a vast territory of the A-9 road”, the military said, adding, “Defence observers are also anticipating the fall of Oddusudan, Nainamadu and Nedunkerni LTTE fortifications as troops of TF 3 and TF 2 march along the A-34 Mankulam- Mullaitivu and the Puliyankulam — Tanniyuttu roads making the dominant eastward military thrust expected to link with the 59 Division at the eastern battlefront.”

Government has overwhelming public support for its war against the LTTE and most people believe the outfit will soon be defeated, an opinion poll published on December 10 indicated, according to Colombo Page. Research group TNS Lanka said close to 75 per cent of people questioned said they are "firmly in favour of military action, seeing it as the only route to wipe out terrorism." More than half the respondents also believed the war will be over by the end of next year. Some 91 per cent of those polled did not believe the LTTE represented the minority ethnic Tamil community. The group questioned 500 people living outside the northern conflict zone between October and November.

27 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants and 20 soldiers were killed as the troops advancing northwards from Kokavil and eastwards from Akkarayankulam captured the strategically vital Terumurikandi junction in Kilinochchi District in the night of December 11, reports Colombo Page. Troops also captured the Murikkandy Hindu temple area, Military sources told Daily News. "With the capture of Terumurikandi, troops have almost entered the build-up area of the Kilinochchi town that extends more than seven kilometres on the A-9 road," an unnamed official said. Heavy fighting erupted between the troops and militants for the control of the location for the last two days but with the air support and intense ground assault the troops pushed back the militants, Defence Ministry said. Citing monitored LTTE communication, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said more than 27 militants were killed while 20 soldiers also died during the fighting in the last two days. The MCNS said the troops are advancing further northwards along the A-9 road to capture Iranamadu junction to open a new escape route for the Tamil civilians who have been trapped in Vaddakkachchi and Paranthan.

Sri Lanka has told an international gathering that the Mumbai attackers followed the pattern used by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) of using sea routes to launch terrorist attacks, according to The Hindu. Addressing the Bali Democracy Forum in Nusa Dua, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, also underscored the need for the world community to beef up maritime security, given that these attacks were committed by terrorists getting in from the Arabian Sea aboard a hijacked vessel. "The Foreign Minister drew the attention of the assembled august gathering at Bali to the similarity of the methods employed by the LTTE and the terrorists who had staged the multiple attacks on Mumbai last month," a foreign ministry statement said in Colombo. Bogollagama had in an address to Shangri-La Forum in June 2007, pointed out that the al Qaeda suicide attack on 'USS Cole' in October 2000, was a "copycat" strike of the LTTE's attack on the Lankan vessel 'Abheetha' in 1991, it said.

President Mahinda Rajapakse has urged politicians concerned over the safety of Tamil civilians to “coax the LTTE to allow the civilians to move towards the safe corridor”. In an interview to the New Indian Express, he said that the LTTE “is preventing civilians from moving to safer areas.” Terming the expected fall of Kilinochchi in the near future not as a “military victory” but as the “beginning of the restorations of democratic freedoms”, the President dismissed the need to wean away people from the LTTE. “There is error in thinking that there is need to wean the people away from the LTTE. There is nothing to show that they are fully committed to the LTTE or nurtured by it,” President Rajapakse said. He said: “We know that the Tamil people left in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu are held there in the thrall of LTTE’s arms.” Once that power is broken, he said, the Tamil people will be free to join the democratic system. On whether the arrangement with Member of Parliament Karuna and Eastern Provincial Council Chief Minister Pillayan is working out, the President said differences of opinion were common in democracy and that he hoped the two “would sort out differences in the larger interests of the people they represent.”

Despite stringent measures to freeze funds of the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) front organisation, it has raised over SLR 60 million in August 2008, according to Sunday Observer. Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee appointed to probe the activities of the INGOs and NGOs, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Member of Parliament Vijitha Herath, said that out of over SLR 4 billion raised by the TRO for post-Tsunami activities, only SLR 55,000,000 are in its accounts. According to Herath, the total amount of post-Tsunami aid received by the Government was SLR 2.2 billion in 2006 and the amount that obtained by the TRO was over SLR 4 billion, including the aid from the USA. “They have received US $ 10 million for the post-tsunami activities from the USA in 2006 and most of these funds are from the state of Maryland. At the moment the American authorities are also investigating whether a major portion of their funds have been channelled to the LTTE,” he said. Though TRO had undertaken to build 15,000 houses, they had built only 300. Highlighting the need for freezing the existing funds of the remaining TRO branches and prevent channelling money to the Organisation he said that some branches in Canada and other European countries were still active in raising funds, adding, “Though the TRO has direct links with the LTTE, its affiliated organisations such as Action Aid International engage in activities assigned by the TRO.” According to the Committee findings, the Save the Children had given financial aid amounting SLR 50 million to the TRO for 12 projects. “The Save the Children has given evidence before the Committee and said that the TRO, which only constructed a Pre-school, had refused to return the given Rs. 30 million which was unspent”, Herath added further.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has called all students in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu Districts who have completed the recent GCE Ordinary Level examination to join combat training, latest military intelligence reports said, Daily News reported. Over 8,000 students sat for the GCE Ordinary Level Examinations in these two Districts, said Defence spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella on December 24. "This clearly proves that the Tigers are forcibly recruiting children and adults to fight our forces. Even they know that the fall of Kilinochchi will be soon. LTTE's 'Police chief' Nadesan also recently admitted that the LTTE was losing their capital," Rambukwella said, according to Daily Mirror.

The LTTE on December 23 vowed to fight on even if they lose more territory inside the area they want to establish as a separate nation for Sri Lanka's Tamil minority, reports Reuters. In an e-mail interview from an undisclosed location, Balasingham Nadesan, political head of the outfit, said the group's "freedom struggle does not centre on a town or a city." "Losing land and recapturing it is common. It is not the real estate that matters. Our freedom struggle will continue to create war towns until our struggle reaches its goal -- until we win," he said. "We will teach a good lesson to the forces in this Kilinochchi battle. We are waiting for the time, place and setting to launch a offensive. Our military capabilities are intact and we have no difficulties in acquiring weapons. We have confidence and we will regain the swathes of land,“ he claimed, adding the LTTE has stepped up its guerrilla war in the Eastern Province, from which it was driven by army troops and the TMVP in 2007. The LTTE has lost around 2,250 fighters so far in 2008, he further added. Admitting that the outfit has faced some recent setbacks in the war, Nadesan said their options for fighting back included sabotage against Sri Lanka's $32 billion economy. "The destruction of the economy is also an aspect of our defensive war. When the economy of the government is destroyed, its genocidal war against the people will also be weakened," Nadesan said, without elaborating on what the LTTE may do. He also rejected President Mahinda Rajapakse’s precondition that the outfit’s cadres surrender their arms before coming for peace talks, saying, "A peace talk at this juncture would not be possible as Government has asked the LTTE to lay down their arms and surrender."

Defence spokesperson Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said 150,000 civilians still remained trapped by the LTTE in and around Kilinochchi. "The President is very watchful that no civilian is hurt in the ongoing battle. This is why the crawl to Kilinochchi by the Security Forces has been very slow," Rambukwella said. Meanwhile, the military said that nine more civilians crossed into Government-controlled areas of Mullaitivu on December from the LTTE-held areas. Most people may not know this, but I believe some people are aware of this.” “The people of Tamil Nadu and its politicians support our struggle irrespective of any political differences between them. None of the leaders there has given up the struggle in support of us. On the contrary, they are continuing to stage protests in support of us. All the political leaders of Tamil Nadu are supporters of our freedom struggle. They have immense love for our people and us. I would say that they raise their voice in support of our struggle without any ulterior motives,” Prabhakaran added. He also said the belief that the LTTE was on the verge of a defeat was misplaced. Asked if he had any timetable for securing an independent Tamil Eelam, since he was ageing, and there was no sign of independence, Prabhakaran said, “Ours is a freedom struggle. It has no time limits or age limits.”

Leader of the LTTE political wing, Balasingham Nadesan, in an e-mail sent to Associated Press said the outfit did not believe they were facing imminent defeat. "We have made several strategic withdrawals in order to save the lives of our people and maintain the strength of our forces. When the time and place is conducive, we will regain the land we have lost," he claimed. Nadesan also said the LTTE remained confident they would not be driven out of their heartland, but implied that if they were, the conflict would continue anyway. "We are used to all types of wars," he said, adding that the outfit began as a guerrilla group and "we will struggle on with the help of our people until their political aspirations are met." Stressing that the outfit had not abandoned hopes for new peace talks, he said, "We have always been ready for peace talks, but the Sri Lankan government has been always insisting on a military solution." The Government, however, reiterated that it would only consider new peace moves if the LTTE agreed to disarm. "For three decades we were trying to convince (rebel leader Velupillai) Prabhakaran and his terror group to come to some sort of reasonable arrangement, but they failed," Cabinet minister Keheliya Rambukwella said, adding, if the outfit refuses to lay down its weapons, "we will not move an inch from our position".

Security Forces are poised to launch a major breakthrough with troops closing on isolated strongholds as Task Force-I troop both in Paranthan and Kilinochchi areas confronted the LTTE in the remaining terrain of the Jaffna-Kandy Highway, military sources from Wanni told Daily News on December 30. "The situation is extremely fragile to the LTTE as they fast shift their cadres in the Jaffna front where the LTTE had kept many of their assets to defend the Paranthan and Kilinochchi fronts as of yesterday evening," an unnamed military official said, adding, troops are now close on the A-9 road from North of Kilinochchi. "Security Forces are closing on to Elephant Pass too as the Task Force I is in the process of creating a wider front towards A-9 road from the North of Kilinochchi to launch the fall of most important grounds in Kilinochchi to cut Tiger links with the Jaffna front," sources added.

More than 50 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants were killed and over 60 others injured by the Security Forces (SFs) as clashes erupted between the two sides when the Task Force-I troops on December 31 entered the strategically important Paranthan town after cutting off the Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) road from the north of Paranthan junction, Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka told Daily News. ”Troops have already entered Paranthan and are short of only 100 meters to reach Paranthan junction. They will fully capture the Paranthan junction within the course of Wednesday night… We have taken the control over the beach front from the North of Paranthan, completely cutting off the links the LTTE is having with the Jaffna front through A-9 road”, the Army Commander said. Paranthan is a strategically important four way junction town in the remaining areas held by the LTTE in Wanni and the North as it connects Pooneryn in the West, Mullaitivu in the East, Kilinochchi in the South, and Jaffna and Muhamalai in the North to one main hub through B-69, A-35 and A-9 roads. While moving towards Paranthan, Task Force-I troops also captured the entire earth bund in the Adampan village opening yet another gateway to Kilinochchi from the North. Separately, the 57 Division troops advanced towards the Kilinochchi build up area after passing the Iranamadu junction from the West of A-9 road. ”The 57 Division troops are just short of two and half kilo meters from the Kilinochchi station”, the Division Commander said. He said the SFs are determined to eradicate LTTE terrorism fully from the country in 2009 and these victories reflect the possibility of achieving that victory soon. ”The LTTE will not exist until the year 2010. We are confident of eradicating LTTE fully in the year 2009”, the Commander added.
