Senior military officials said the LTTE would not be able to mount major offensives in the Eastern province due to a shrinking arsenal. The outfit’s leadership is also not in a position to transfer ammunition from the Vanni to the East as the Vanni units too are facing a severe shortage of ammunition, they said. "This is an unprecedented situation. We are certain the LTTE is finding it extremely difficult to reinforce cadres fighting in the east where they are battling both security forces and the breakaway Karuna faction," a military official said.

Five security force (SF) personnel on duty were injured on December 18 when LTTE cadres operating from the un-cleared areas (area not under Government control) directed mortar fire towards the Government-controlled Kadjuwatte area in Batticaloa district. According to a Media Centre for the National Security spokesperson, SFs repulsed a LTTE attack when the outfit’s cadres fired a few rounds of 122-mm heavy artillery towards the Army detachments. He added that the LTTE was taking advantage of the situation where the SFs had lessened the intensity of the retaliation considering the safety of the civilians crossing into the cleared areas (area under Government control) from the uncleared areas. It is believed that the LTTE suffered heavy losses and the forces suffered no casualties, the spokesperson added.
