A Defence Ministry statement said, "The moves by LTTE units that attempted to move into the liberated territory from Periya Panchan and Thampanai were successfully thwarted by the security forces… LTTE casualties would go up as infiltrating terrorist elements drew heavy gun fire from the troops at the Wanni forward defences."

SLN sources said the Fast Attack Craft patrolling along the Point Pedro coast observed a suspicious boat moving north close to the beach and alerted the SLN commandos of the Special Boat Squadron who intercepted the boat in the Manalkadu area. On the request of the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE, ICRC had agreed to extend its presence at Omanthai from August 27, the ICRC head of delegation Toon Vandenhove announced in Colombo on August 24. In June 2007, the organization reduced its presence at the crossing points to three days a week following a number of security incidents that jeopardized the safety of civilians crossing the Lines and that of ICRC personnel. ICRC will continue to be present at the Uyilankulam crossing point in Mannar district on the usual three days (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), as not many people reportedly use that crossing.

Amman later informed the public that the eight cadres had to be executed because they had misappropriated funds. However, a civilian who had managed to escape to government controlled areas recently told the Website that the actual reason for the killing was because they criticized the LTTE leaders who used funds for personal ends. The Website further learnt from these sources that the victims had openly criticized Amman for being the most fraudulent leader.
