President Ashraf Ghani said on February 2 that eleven suspects had been arrested in connection with the recent spate of deadly attacks and vowed the Afghans would take revenge event if it takes a hundred years, reports Pajhwok Afghan News. He said 11 suspects had been detained in connection with the recent deadly attacks in surprise raids from Kabul to Fazal Beg area, Logar, Ghazni and Hilmand Provinces and the raids would continue. In a televised address to the nation after Friday’s prayers at the mosque in the Presidential Palace, Ghani said a new security plan for Kabul would be ready on Sunday (February 4). The President said Pakistan was ‘the center of Taliban’ who were responsible for the recent deadly attacks that killed and wounded nearly 500 people. “Now the decision rests with Pakistan, whatever it (Pakistan) likes for itself, it should like the same for others,” Ghani said. “No one can defeat us, we are unconquerable. Today is the time to change our grief into determination.” “Islam is a universal religion and the Taliban who claimed the latest attacks do not believe in Allah and His Prophet”, Ghani remarked, declaring the Afghans were not only winning the war but also on the reconciliation front.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released its report on civilian casualties in Afghanistan during the year 2017 on February 15, reports Khaama Press. A total of 10,453 civilian fatalities included 3,438 people killed and 7,015 injured. The report further states that the second leading cause of civilian casualties in 2017 were ground engagements between Anti-Government elements and Pro-Government Forces, although there was a decrease of 19 per cent from the record levels seen in 2016. The report attributes close to two-thirds of all casualties (65 per cent) to anti-government elements: 42 per cent to the Taliban, 10 per cent to Daesh / Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIL-KP), and 13 per cent to undetermined and other anti-government elements. Pro-Government Forces caused a fifth of civilian casualties: 16 per cent were attributed to the Afghan national security forces, two per cent to international military forces, one per cent each to pro-Government armed groups and undetermined pro-Government forces. Un-attributed cross-fire during ground engagements between Anti-Government elements and Pro-Government Forces caused 11 per cent of civilian casualties. Although this figure represents a decrease of nine per cent compared with 2016, the report highlights the high number of casualties caused by suicide bombings and other attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Akbar, reports Khaama Press on February 23. President Ghani further added that the residents of Kandahar and Helmand in the South and Nimroz and Herat in the West have vowed to assist the Afghan Forces in a bid to help the works of the project to be completed on time. The statement claimed, the project had faced delays due to United States (US) military presence in the region. The launch of work on the Afghan section of the pipeline was happy news for all Afghans, it added. Taliban vowed to check corruption in implementation of the scheme if it found signs of acts that infringed on people’s rights or showed misappropriation by the rulers. The group blamed the US for indirect meddling on a massive copper project in central Logar province.
