Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in the forests between Tadmetla and Duled villages in the Chintagufa region in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on September 5, reports The Times of India. Sukma Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajat Nag said, "Police had received specific inputs about the presence of Maoists of the Jagargunda area committee in the forests of Tadmetla in the Chintagufa region of Sukma. Based on the information that they were hacking out a plan for a major attack, a joint team of battalion 203rd of the CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] and DRG [District Reserve Guards] went out on an operation." When the SFs were crossing forests between Tadmetla and Minpa, a group of armed Maoists opened indiscriminate firing upon them, which was retaliated against, resulting in an encounter in which two Maoists were killed. SF personnel sanitised the area and recovered two bodies of male Maoists from the encounter site. The slain Maoists, who are identified as Sori Deva and Rama Deva, both residents of Tadmetla and ‘militia’ (people’s army of the Maoists) cadres of the Jagargunda area committee, carried INR 100,000 cash bounty each on their heads, and murder cases were registered against them. Police have also recovered a 12-bore double rifle, a pistol, uniforms, raincoats, and other materials used by the Maoists in the forest.

In a significant development and a first in Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE]-hit Chhattisgarh, polling stations will open in 40 villages of the Bastar division, reports business-standard.com on September 8. The 40 Naxal-affected villages have never had a polling station before; however, with the upcoming Chhattisgarh Assembly elections in Naxal-hit Sukma, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Bastar, and Dantewada districts, the Election Commission of India (ECI) will be setting up polling centers in villages. Earlier, these villages were inaccessible, and the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) used to terrorize them, saying that whoever cast a vote would be punished. Sundarraj P, Bastar Range Inspector-General of Police (IGP), stating that in the last four years, over 63 Security Forces (SFs) camps have been established in the insurgency-hit Bastar division, he said, "A total of 63 camps of security forces in interior and forested areas of Bastar region have been established in the last four years. Earlier, the polling centres of these places were shifted to other areas. But this year, our effort will be to ensure the establishment of maximum polling centres at these places and opening new centres as it will strengthen democracy. Our effort is to ensure a safe and secure environment for voters to exercise their rights. We are making extensive efforts to ensure the establishment of polling centres at over 40 places and the process is underway”

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) was likely to take over the probe into the Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] network in Uttar Pradesh after the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested five alleged operatives involved in re-establishing the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) from Ballia District on August 16, reports Hindustan Times on September 8. On September 5, the NIA conducted searches at eight locations in Prayagraj, Varanasi, Chandauli, Azamgarh, and Deoria districts as part of an ongoing investigation into the revival of a banned political party and alleged Naxal organization, the CPI-Maoist. Investigations revealed that Pramod Mishra was the leader of these cadres, sympathizers, and overground workers (OGWs) associated with the organization. The ATS officials also claimed the five key accused arrested [booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 121-A (waging war against the nation and collecting firearms with intent to wage war against the nation) and other sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), 1967] were working under the leadership of Mishra, who formed an ad hoc committee with the help of another CPI-Maoist leader Santosh Verma after the death of its main leader Sandeep Yadav alias Rupesh, who carried a bounty of INR 8.4 million from different state governments. The NIA said Sandeep was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a village in Gaya District in Bihar in May 2022. An Uttar Pradesh Police official said the arrests of five alleged Maoists in Ballia and raids in Uttar Pradesh were both linked to the same network of people, following which the NIA would take over the investigations.

A group of Maoists allegedly barged into Purty's house and killed him.
