Residents of Asthakuwale village under the Ghorabandha police station-limits of East Singhbhum district in Jharkhand reportedly lynched a left-wing extremist—Naxalite—of the People’s War Group (PWG) on August 21. The incident occurred when a group of 20 Naxalites arrived at the village and opened two rounds of fire when the residents refused to give in to their demand for food. On hearing the gun shots, residents of adjacent villages gathered and lynched the Naxalite when he and his accomplices tried to escape. The incident occurred barely hours after the Chief Minister Arjun Munda visited the Naxalite-affected Dumaria block of the district and assured Government help for those who put up resistance against the Naxalites and announced a 15 crore development package for the area. Munda said that his Government was ready for talks with the Naxalites provided they lay down arms and are willing to be rehabilitated.

The bandh was called to protest the lynching of nine Naxalites of the PWG in Longo village in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand on August 8.
