The Barpeta Police arrested three suspected jihadis, including two teachers and the fake father of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) mastermind Jahirul alias Jeherul alias Jabirul, who was arrested by West Bengal Police and unearthed some vital information regarding the ongoing subversive activities in the State, said Superintendent of Police (SP), Barpeta, Siladitya Setia on October 2, reports The Assam Tribune. With the arrest of these three, identified as Abdus Sattar Mia alias Sattar Moulavi, Khalilur Rahman and Kazimddin, more links to Jihadi activities have been unearthed. The first two persons are teachers and the second one is the Booth Level Officer (BLO) of Chaparbari Polling Station while the third one is the impersonated father of the most wanted JMB activist. With this arrest, it came to light a few days back that Jabirul had enrolled his name in the voters’ list of Sarukshetri Assembly constituency in Barpeta District in 2013 and 2014, acquired a school certificate and even vital documents like PAN. Jahirul went underground in the last part of 2014 when the National Investigation Agency (NIA) began to search him after the arrest of Sahnur Alam, the JMB mastermind in Assam. All the three were produced before the judicial magistrate, who remanded them to Police custody for one week.

A consignment of weapons used during the Dhaka cafe attack (July 1, 2016) was modified in India before it was transported to Bangladesh in mango baskets, India Today reports on October 4. "We have come to know that the modification of these arms was done in Munger city in Bihar state of India and then they came to Chapainwabganj border," Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Chief Monirul Islam said. "A seal from a factory in Bihar was found on the three AK22 rifles recovered after the Gulshan terror attack," Islam stated. A month before the terror attack in Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, the consignment of AK 22 rifles and some small arms reached the militants in the Bangladesh capital. Missing new JMB (Jama’at-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh) leader Nurul Islam Marjan, who was the field-level coordinator of the attack, received the consignment in Dhaka and delivered it to the militant den in Bashundhara Residential Area.

The National Investigating Agency (NIA) on October 13 took over custody of five suspected operatives of Jama'atul Muajhideen Bangladesh (JMB)connection with the October 2, 2014 Khagragarh (Bardhaman District) blast, reports Indian Express. They have been identified as, Moulana Yousuf, Jahidul Sheikh alias Zafar alias Jabirul, Mohammad Rafique, Shahidul alias Shamim and Abdul Kalam alias Kalim. The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police had arrested six militants from Assam in the last week of September for allegedly conspiring to carry out blasts in the country, and also striking a deal with Bodo militants. Of the six, five were named in a chargesheet filed by NIA in the case. The NIA had recently moved a Kolkata court, pleading custody of the five accused on grounds that they needed to interrogate the accused, who might have crucial information about the JMB’s presence in Bengal or other parts of India.Of the five, Moulana Yusuf is allegedly the second-in-command of JMB’s West Bengal unit, and one of the main accused in the blast. Sources said that the NIA had declared INR 10,00,000 as reward for Yusuf. A resident of Mangalkot in Bardhaman District, Yusuf was the chief motivator for the JMB in West Bengal, said sources. Yusuf and Kalam had been chargesheeted by the NIA in absentia while the role of the other three would be ascertained after their interrogation, agency sources said.

On October 14, Border Security Force (BSF) troops recovered two country-made pistols, four magazines and five rounds of ammunition near Churiantpur in Malda District, reports The Times of India. "The country-made automatic pistols were probably made in Munger in Bihar and were being sent across the border to Bangladesh. On Friday evening, troops of the 24Bn BSF from BOP Churiantpur received a tip-off regarding gunrunning activity. During a special joint operation with the police, two groups were seen approaching a mandir from the Churiantpur and Gulapganj sides. The two groups met near the mandir and were challenged by the security personnel. The miscreants managed to escape due to poor visibility and waterlogging. While escaping they dropped a cloth bag that was retrieved by the troops. The two guns, magazines and cartridges were found inside," a senior BSF officer said. The Indo-Bangladesh border along Kaliachak and Baishnabnagar in Malda District of West Bengal is fast emerging as a transit route for illegal arms. Over the last few weeks, the BSF seized several arms consignments being smuggled into Bangladesh. Some of these could be for operatives of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), security agencies suspect. So far, in 2016, the BSF's South Bengal Frontier apprehended seven weapons smugglers and seized 22 air guns, six pistols and 35 country made pistols close to the border.

Two persons were arrested along with Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) worth of INR 2 lakh from the Barpeta road area in Barpeta District on October 14, reports The Times of India. "One of them was identified as Ruleka Khatun. About 400 fake notes of Rs 500 were seized from them," a Police officer said. Sources said the two had confessed to procuring the fake notes from an agent in Bihar. They added that the duo had been asked to give the notes to some other agents. "In many cases, FICN racketeers are found to be involved in cattle smuggling and even funding militancy in the region. Investigation will reveal more details," the officer added.Usually, a consignment of FICN worth of INR 1 lakh is smuggled into the state in exchange of INR 60,000 worth of real notes, report said. Thus, when agents supply these notes to the market, they get a flat 40% cut on every lot. The couriers, after acquiring the FICNs from their counterparts in Bangladesh or Pakistan, pump them into Assam. Later, a separate batch of couriers, mostly hired on low payment, circulate them in major towns of the state like Dibrugarh, Tezpur, Bongaigaon and various parts of the Barak Valley. Earlier, Assam Police sources had hinted at the involvement of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) linkmen in FICN rackets in the region. "On several occasions, police have found a nexus between FICN couriers, JMB linkmen and cattle smugglers," a source said.

At least four mid-level leaders of the banned New Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants sneaked into India, Bangladesh Police said, reports The Sentinel on October 17. The Police, after raiding different places to arrest leaders and supporters of New JMB group, said that at least four out of 12 mid-level JMB leaders have sneaked into India while others remain out of their radar. The JMBfollows the ideology of Islamic State (IS). “Four of them left the country after the Gulshan attack and have now been staying in India,” a high official of the Police’s Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, requesting anonymity, confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune. Police also said the New JMB leaders have been recruiting fresh members amid a Police crackdown that began after the July 1 Gulshan cafe attack.

Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) team arrived in India on October 22 to questionJama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) operatives that were arrested in West Bengal, reports DNA. A team of two investigators reached the National Investigation Agency (NIA) office and questioned the six JMB operatives, who were arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police last month. The team questioned and examined them to find out if they played any role in the attack at Dhaka’s high security zone, Gulshan. The agency will also explore their links with the Islamic State (IS), if any, report said.

West Bengal with its porous borders has turned into an easy transit point and secure hideout for the agents of terror outfits like Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), echoofindia.com reports on October 31. "West Bengal's border is porous and this was used by militant groups to get an entry into the country and spread to other states. This is nothing new. The state has became a safe and secure shelter for them," an official stated. Militant outfits like JMB, Islamic State (IS) and ISI operatives are recruiting agents and training them here, he added. A special task force of Kolkata Police had arrested six top JMB militants, including four wanted, in connection with the 2014 Bardhaman blast case, from West Bengal and Assam in September. "Taking advantage of the unemployment situation, the agents have been recruiting people with ease. These groups also have recruitment cells which look for possible youths either studying in senior schools or looking for job as their possible targets," the official said.
