MQM remained unfazed with TTP’s threat and in response MQM leadership reiterated that “it wants an educated and Quaid-e-Azam’s Pakistan where everyone enjoys the right to live all in freedom”. Faisal Ali Subzwari, the MQM’s Deputy Parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly, said the MQM had come to know about the TTP’s threat only through the media and had nothing much to comment on it. “It should be up to the authorities and the security administration to see if there is any substance in that threat,” said Subzwari, who is also Sindh Minister for Youth Affairs. MQM Chief Altaf Hussain directed the party to hold a countrywide referendum against the Taliban, reports Daily Times. The Coordination Committee will decide the final date of the polling. According to the details, the referendum would be held under the social forum of the MQM and all preparations have been completed, including printing of the ballot papers. The MQM’s media centre said that the party was going to ask a simple question to Pakistanis on the ballot paper, “Do you want a Pakistan of Quaid-e-Azam or a Pakistan of Taliban?”

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on November 2 decided to `deal’ with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and rid the people of Karachi of its `suppression’, reported Dawn. TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan called reporters and read out a statement, saying the Taliban had decided to rid the people of Karachi of the suppression of MQM. “We would show no leniency to the MQM who have repressed the people of Karachi”. He said the Taliban had started consultations to work out a strategy for the coming General Election. “Taliban would announce the policy after the official announcement of the General Election,” he said, adding that contesting political parties would be divided into three categories. “Taliban urge all the nationalist parties in Sindh and Balochistan, including the Sindh Liberation Army (SLA) and the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), to continue their struggle against the unjust system according to the teachings of Islam and we would support their struggle,” he said.

The Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that the Government would move in accordance with the interim order of the Supreme Court on the law and order situation in Karachi and take action against TTP in the city. Talking to reporters, he said Karachi was turning into a stronghold of the Taliban and some measures against them had already been initiated. He said the Government would address the apex court’s reservations on the situation in Karachi but added that some aspects of the reasons behind the law and order problem would also be brought to its notice.

As the Supreme Court has directed the Sindh Government to tackle a growing influx of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Karachi to bring peace back, the security agencies have informed the Federal Ministry of Interior about the presence of at least 25 al Qaeda and TTP-linked militant outfits which have infiltrated the port city and turned it into a battlefield between the law enforcement agencies and the miscreants, The News reported on November 5 . The Supreme Court had directed the Police and other law-enforcement agencies in Sindh to “take all possible measures to meet the challenge posed due to immigration of TTP who are armed with sophisticated weapons”. While looking into the rising incidents of killings in Karachi, the Supreme Court has ordered the Sindh police chief to submit a report on the mass infiltration of TTP militants. The 25 key al Qaeda and TTP-linked militant outfits which have literally taken hostage the port city of Karachi include five factions of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) - Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al Alami, Qari Zafar group, Qari Shakeel group, Akram Lahori group and Farooq Bengali group. Then there are three factions of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which are active in Karachi – Commander Waliur Rehman group (from South Waziristan), Badr Mansoor group (from North Waziristan) and Mullah Fazlullah group (from Swat). The remaining Jihadi-cum sectarian groups in Karachi include Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan (SMP), Sunni Tehreek (ST), Daawat-e-Islami (DeI), Harkatul Mujahideen (HuM), Harkatul Mujahideen Al Alami (HUMA), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Jamaat’ul Furqaan (JuF), Harkatul Jehadul Islami (HuJI), Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM), Jundallah, Tehreek-e-Islami Lashkar-e-Mohammadi (TILM), Lashkar-e-Islami (LeI), Mehdi Militia (MM), Hezbollah, Kharooj, Tawheed Brigade (TB), Al Mukhtar Group, Punjabi Mujahideen etc. Most of these groups in Karachi, which has a large Pashtun populace, generate funds by indulging in kidnappings for ransom, bank robberies, street crimes and extortion. Another revenue source for them is the heroine trade, with the drug being exported to foreign countries via Karachi.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on November 4 announced to hold a public referendum on November 8 to have a consensus that the people of Pakistan want a secular Pakistan of Quaid-e-Azam or the rule of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the country, reports Daily Times. Addressing a crowded press conference at the Lal-Qila ground, MQM deputy convener Farooq Sattar said that the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) had realised the presence of TTP in Karachi and stated that serious notice should be taken about their presence and had called for action against Taliban in Karachi. He recalled that MQM chief Altaf Hussain had warned about the Talibanisation of the metropolis, as well as the country, but unfortunately political and religious parties, some intellectuals, anchor persons and journalists refuted his view point and ridiculed him instead of taking his apprehensions seriously. They also accused that Hussain was terrifying the public but now the verdict of the Supreme Court had proved the vision of MQM chief. He mentioned that Altaf Hussain was the only leader who had warned about growing religious extremism in the country several years ago.

During the opening day of the new session of the Senate on November 6 both the Awami National Party (ANP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) agreed that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have penetrated Karachi (Sindh) but the ANP said they can’t be blamed for all the evils while the MQM insisted they should be, reported Dawn. This exchange of arguments took place between ANP Senator Shahi Syed and MQM’s Tahir Mashhadi during a debate on the law and order situation in Karachi, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan. Shahi Syed said that people belonging to all political parties and sects were being killed in Karachi. “The name of Taliban is being used by the hired killers. Extortion is being collected in the name of Taliban,” the ANP senator said. He expressed fears that the Pakhtun could be targeted in the city in the name of operation against Taliban. Shahi Syed questioned as to why an indiscriminate operation had not been launched against the criminals operating in the city when all the three coalition partners in the Government — the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), MQM and ANP had agreed on it and even signed a code. Demanding a full-fledged operation against extortionists, drug mafia and target killers in the city, the ANP senator said the criminals had even established their control rooms in different parts of the city. “This operation should not be against one particular party, ethnic group or sect and it should be across the board,” he said. He also stressed the need for formulating legislation to de-weaponise Karachi and to enhance the punishment for those who carried illegal arms. He claimed that hundreds of weapons were being used on just one licence number in the city.
