Separately, a joint investigation team in Lahore on the same day arrested three main suspects from Lahore and Islamabad. The three JeM cadres reportedly said that Pearl’s photograph sent along with the e-mail, had been given to them by Sheikh Omar Syed, a prominent Jaish terrorist linked to the Al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden. Omar was one of the terrorists released along with JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar consequent to the hijacking of Indian air craft IC-814 at Kandahar, Afghanistan, in December 1999. The three terrorists are said to have been working as intermediaries between the US journalist and terrorist outfits. Daniel Pearl had gone missing 13 days ago while informing his wife in Karachi that he was to interview Pir Mubarak Ali Shah Gilani of the Jamaat-ul-Fuqra (JF).

Media reports have also indicated that Sheikh Omar Syed has emerged as a chief suspect behind the US journalist Daniel Pearl's abduction. "They have told investigators that they sent the e-mails with photographs on the directives of Sheikh Omar," one investigator said, on condition of anonymity. He said police later raided Omar's in-laws' house in Lahore and arrested some of his relatives. The investigation has so far led to 13 arrests, including six in Karachi, five in Lahore and two in Islamabad, but Pearl's fate remained unknown. Omar, being suspected of operating with the fake identity of Bashir to trap the American journalist, is also alleged to have made telephone calls to New Delhi one day after his gang abducted Pearl. The probe team has taken into custody family members, cousins and nephews of Omar to ensure the safety of Pearl. A search is reportedly underway in several Pakistani cities to locate his wife and a son.

Pakistan-based proscribed terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) on February 6 denied any link with the abduction of US journalist Daniel Pearl. "We have no link with the kidnapping of the US reporter or with the people allegedly arrested by the police in this connection," Jaish spokesperson Rana Farooq Tahir said in Muzaffarabad. Pakistani investigators on the same day named Sheikh Omar as a chief suspect in Pearl's abduction and said he was a JeM leader. But Tahir while denying Omar was connected to the outfit added that they did not believe in "inhuman activities such as kidnapping." He also said "We don't have any activities in Pakistan. We are confined to occupied Kashmir where we are engaged in a legitimate struggle to overthrow illegal Indian rule… We target military personnel and installations."

According to a news report in Pakistani daily Dawn, abducted US journalist Daniel Pearl is believed to have been recovered and is scheduled to leave Islamabad for United Kingdom on February 9, today. Citing documentary evidence, the report said Daniel Pearl is booked on PIA flight PK-757 for London. Official sources, however, refused to provide information as to when Pearl was recovered from Karachi. The report also said that Police sources indicated that Pearl was recovered early on February 8 morning and was immediately handed over to US officials. Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG -Operations) Karachi, Tariq Jamil, said that police did not know anything about Daniel Pearl's recovery. "He could be some other Daniel who is booked on the flight," Jamil added.

Separately, police formally arrested three suspects on February 8 for their alleged involvement in the abduction of Pearl. A senior police official said Salman, Fahad and Adil, who had been detained in Karachi, confessed to having sent electronic messages attached with photographs of Daniel Pearl to the media at the behest of a key suspect, Ahmed Omar Sheikh. Salman and Fahad are reported to be members of the proscribed Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Police sources added that they were looking for three other suspects - Hashim Qadeer, Mohammad Bashir and Imtiaz Siddique - who had earlier been thought to be the main suspects. Sources added that Imtiaz was an impostor and he was in fact Omar Sheikh.

According to media reports, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, is reported to have hinted at the possibility that the abduction of US journalist Daniel Pearl could have been orchestrated by India. President Musharraf reportedly said this during his visit to the US. He also said that there could have been a "negative fallout" from action against different terrorist and sectarian outfits. A Washington Post report has said that "the general believes Mr Pearl may have been a pawn in an intelligence game being played by India." In the interview, Musharraf is reported to have based his suspicions on the fact that Maulana Masood Azhar, Chief of the proscribed Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and the main suspect in the abduction, Omar Sheikh, had both been in Indian prisons and were never tried. According to Musharraf, "this (argument) made sense to him because ... the leader of the Jaish-i-Mohammad was in jail for seven long years in India and he wasn't even tried ... How is all this happening in India? And this man (Umer) was also there." "We all know," Musharraf added, "intelligence is a very bad game, and they can come out with any kind of game to justify or to organize or orchestrate such activities. These are common activities orchestrated by the intelligence agencies." However, the report also quotes senior Pakistani investigators as saying that they have not gathered any evidence of an Indian involvement in the abduction, which "seems to be an indigenous plot unless Umer Shaikh appears and confesses to fronting for Indian intelligence". It was ridiculous to expect, an official told the paper, that the abductor would "use the most monitored telephone connection in Karachi to talk to his bosses in New Delhi".

Police have made two more arrests in the search for abducted US journalist Daniel Pearl, but the alleged main suspect - British-born Al Qaeda terrorist Omar Sheikh - remained at large. The fresh arrests were made in Islamabad at the weekend, bringing the number of people arrested since Pearl disappeared on January 23 to 16. Media reports have indicated that attempts to contact Omar through Masood Azhar, the jailed chief of outlawed Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), were also unsuccessful. Police are reportedly speculating that Omar may be in hiding in the Punjab or in Afghanistan.

News reports said that Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has ruled out handing over 20 terrorists wanted by India. He was speaking to newsmen on February 16 at the end of his visit to Washington. Announcing this, he claimed that "Now, I am not going to do their (India’s) bidding". Commenting on the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), President Musharraf said these organisations have taken the "thekedari (contract) for jehadi operations in many countries and have become active participants in international politics". Later, speaking to newsmen in Dubai Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar said the 20 fugitives demanded by India were not involved in the December 13, 2001 attack on Parliament and there is no question of handing anyone over. Questioning the Indian list, the minister said the it deals with crimes that were committed 20 years ago and were not related to December 13. Hence, he added, this "brings us to the question, why should India ask for them now. It is a clear bid to malign Pakistan".

Pakistan on February 19 rejected an Indian request to share information from an front ranking Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist arrested in connection with the abduction of US journalist Daniel Pearl. Reacting to India's Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Nirupama Rao’s statement on the same day that Sheikh Omar had information on the hijacking of an Indian aircraft IC 814 in December 1999 to Kandahar, Afghanistan, as well as the terrorist attacks on the State Legislature building in Jammu and Kashmir in October 2001 and Indian Parliament on December 13, 2001, a Pakistani government official said "Why should we share information with them? We have been asking (India) to share information on so many things which they never shared. Why should we share now? Omar was in Indian custody for so many years. Why did they not interrogate him then?".

Meanwhile, media reports indicated that a three-minute videotape, sent to the US consulate in Karachi, does not show the abductors' faces but focuses on Pearl, who is speaking. Reports said "the camera is focused on Pearl's face. Suddenly his head is chopped off… a blunt weapon was used." Investigators pointed out that although the videotape showed at least two persons taking part in the killing but more could have been involved. The video was reportedly first delivered to a Karachi-based journalist working for an US newspaper, acting as an informer for the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents, a provincial government official and a police officer said.

President Pervez Musharraf ordered security forces on February 22 to arrest "each and every one of the gang of terrorists" involved in the killing of US journalist Daniel Pearl. As reported earlier, a videotape received by the US Consulate in Karachi on February 21 contained scenes showing Pearl in captivity and also scenes of his killing by the abductors. A statement released by the President’s office said that he would "stay the course to ensure that his country and indeed this world is free of terror. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the slain journalist." Such acts of terror, according to him, "are painful experiences for the society but would not deter him, his government and the people of Pakistan from acting with all their strength against terrorists and in fighting this menace together with the international community."

An Anti-terrorism court in Karachi, on February 25, while extending the police detention of three key suspects in the abduction of murdered US journalist Daniel Pearl for 14 days, also ordered the police not to coerce them in an attempt to extract confessions. The three suspects, including Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist Omar Sheikh, have reportedly complained that they were being pressured to admit to the crime. Meanwhile, the police have launched a country-wide search for seven persons suspected of carrying out the killing. They included an Arab man with possible links to Osama bin Laden. Police sources have indicated that there was enough evidence that certain foreign nationals probably connected to the Al Qaeda terrorist network of bin Laden were part of the abductors' gang or at least were involved in its planning.

Media reports quoting senior officials said Pakistan has informed the US government that it has no serious objection to a request from the US authorities seeking extradition of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist Omar Sheikh, suspected to be the mastermind behind the abduction of murdered US journalist Daniel Pearl. Official sources have indicated that contrary to media reports, a valid extradition treaty exists between the governments of the United States and Pakistan. Officials indicated that, soon after independence, Pakistan had validated the extradition treaty of December 1931between the US and Great Britain. Pakistan formulated its own Extradition Act in 1972. The US Administration is reported to have contended that Pakistan, as a successor government, is bound by that treaty. Reports added that more than one request from the US government for an immediate extradition of Omar Sheikh was discussed during talks between Wendy Chamberlain, the US Ambassador to Pakistan, and President Pervez Musharraf in Islamabad, on February 26. "Omar will ultimately be handed over to the US authorities under the extradition act of 1972," said a Pakistani official. He said an extradition treaty that still exists between the US and Britain would take care of "legal complications" that were likely to arise due to Omar's British citizenship. Separately, a senior police official involved in the investigation of the Pearl murder case has said that a swift extradition of Omar prior to investigations being completed in Pakistan would "spell a disaster for the abduction cum murder probe…With Omar removed from the case, there can't be any investigation or prosecution."

Federal Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider said, on February 27, in Bali, Indonesia, that the US government had "not given us an official request'' for the extradition of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the alleged mastermind behind the January 23-abduction of murdered US journalist Daniel Pearl. "It is quite likely that when we find enough evidence against Saeed, he can possibly be tried in Pakistan, for which he can get maximum punishment,'' Haider said. While indicating that once the US Administration makes a formal request, Pakistan would "evaluate the situation,'' he added it might not be necessary by then. According to him, "Maybe the Americans, when they see that the trial is proceeding quite correctly in Pakistan ... America may not actually ask,'' Haider told reporters amid an international conference on human smuggling. While rejecting reports in the international media that have linked Omar to Pakistan's external intelligence agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), Haider said "Tell me, will the intelligence agency of Pakistan get any benefit from this? This tragic and unfortunate happening on the territory of Pakistan will of course not bring any credit to Pakistan. Why should anybody who is patriotic to Pakistan indulge in such an act?''

According to media reports, six to eight unidentified gunmen ambushed a Karachi Central Prison (KCP) van carrying 42 under-trail prisoners and killed a police personnel and a prisoner on February 28. 11 persons were injured in the attack. The attack follows the February 26-threat by an unknown caller to attack KCP with rockets if Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist Omar Sheikh, prime suspect in the abduction of slain US journalist Daniel Pearl, was extradited to the US. Official sources have alleged that the gunmen wanted to secure the release of certain activists of a proscribed sectarian group being transported back to the jail. Sources added that many cadres of the proscribed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) were among the under-trial prisoners in the van.

Foreign Secretary Inam-ul-Haque said in Tokyo on March 1 that Pakistan reserved the right to prosecute Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist Omar Sheikh, prime suspect in the abduction of murdered US journalist Daniel Pearl, in one of its own courts. He said the government was still considering a US request to extradite the British-born Omar. According to him, "I am not ruling out the possibilities of extradition. The government is examining the request." But he added that Pakistan has "the first right" to try to punish Omar in a domestic court. Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aziz Ahmed Khan, while confirming on February 28 that extradition "has been discussed" between USA and Pakistan, added "for the moment we will continue with our investigations."
