According to a report in Daily Star, in the northwestern districts of Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore and Bogra, a vigilante Islamist group called Jagrota Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) was formed in April 2004. The JMJB is alleged to kill people in the name of ‘anti-outlaw operations’, force women to wear the Hijab (veil) and men to grow beards, reportedly under police collusion. The police are alleged to be supporting the outfit headed by Azizur Rahman alias Bangla Bhai, which has started a drive to 'cleanse' leftist outlaws. It has thus far allegedly killed seven persons and assaulted hundreds of others who oppose them, terming them as Sarbahara (outlaw). However, Rahman while denying the charges has claimed that his group has 300000 activists across the country.

According to Daily Star, the Islamist vigilante group, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) led by Bangla Bhai, has been involved in subversive activities for the last six years to allegedly establish a Taliban-like rule in Bangladesh, even though the outfit came to limelight only recently. JMJB leaders and activists have reportedly stated that their organization supports Islamist extremist leaders and also follows the ideals of the Taliban and spearheads a movement based on Jehad. To achieve their objective, the JMJB has reportedly created a three-tier organization with an estimated cadre strength of 10,000. JMJB leader Bangla Bhai has claimed that the organization is headquartered in Dhaka but refused to disclose its exact location. The JMJB has strong bases in the Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jessore, Chittagong, Joypurhat, Rangpur and Bogra districts.

Daily Star has reported that locals in the northwest have alleged that the Deputy Minister for Land, Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu, and other local legislators are supporting the vigilante Islamist extremist outfit, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), against outlawed left-wing extremists. The JMJB's action reportedly started in certain sub-districts of Rajshahi, Naogaon and Natore after the outlaws popularly known as 'Sarbahara' killed four relatives and friends of the Deputy Minister and other parliamentarians in the past six months. However, the JMJB's self-styled 'spiritual leader' Mawlana Abdur Rahman has denied these allegations.

According to the Daily Star, the police are yet to receive orders for the arrest of Bangla Bhai, chief of the vigilante Islamist group, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB). Police stations reportedly did not get instructions on what the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in Rajshahi on May 17 said was issued. The Home Ministry had reportedly issued the order on May 16 to arrest Bangla Bhai, blamed for killing five underground outlaws in the northwest in vigilante action since April 1. The report quoting unnamed sources also indicated that Bangla Bhai returned to Rajshahi on May 15 from Pabna after villagers caught 19 operatives of his outfit in Kalupara a day earlier. He is currently suspected to be holed up at Bagmara in Rajshahi or Naldanga in Natore, allegedly supported by relatives of a Deputy Minister and supporters of another Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmaker.

According to Daily Star, the newly emerged Islamist vigilante group, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), is another name for the Jama'atul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB), which was active during 2003 and whose armed cadres had reportedly fought with police for hours at Jaipurhat in August 2003. JMJB's self-styled spiritual leader, Moulana Abdur Rahman, claimed that his organisation was established in 1998, but an investigation reveals that the militant organisation is the same JMB.

According to the Daily Star, cadres of the outlawed left-wing extremist Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) killed two operatives of the vigilante Islamist group Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), injured six others and launched arson attacks on three houses in Naogaon on May 17. This attack was reportedly in revenge for the killing of five outlaws in the northwest since April 1 in vigilante attacks allegedly carried out by the JMJB. However, according to police sources, JMJB 'operations commander' Bangla Bhai was no longer in Rajshahi. He has been reportedly staying alternately at camps in Bagmara in Rajshahi and Naldanga in Natore.

According to Daily Star, after killing three left-wing extremists in Naogaon on May 20, the Islamist vigilante outfit, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), was now planning 'to punish' seven more people, including a former legislator and four union parishad (local body) chairmen. A top JMJB leader on May 21 disclosed the names on a ‘hit list’ and said his group would continue ‘vigorous outlaw cleansing operations with continued police assistance’ for an indefinite period. The leader claimed the ‘list’ was finalised after Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) operative Badshah admitted to them that he killed up to 50 people at the directive of a state minister's brother and the chairmen in Raninagar. Badshah was one of the three persons killed by JMJB on May 20. However, Fazlur Rahman, Superintendent of Naogaon Police, termed the reports of the killing of three PBCP activists by the JMJB as false.

According to Daily Star, a large number of Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) activists staged a demonstration on May 22 in the Rajshahi district and also issued death threats to journalists. They also urged the administration and media to support it in ‘eliminating outlaws’. The JMJB, an Islamist vigilante group, has alleged that the media was 'misreporting' and 'fabricating stories'. The demonstration was held after a half-day strike called by the main opposition party, Awami League, and its allies demanded the arrest of JMJB 'commander', Bangla Bhai, blaming him for spreading panic and the killing of at least eight persons since April 1.

Citing an unnamed police officer, reports said that he is still untraceable.
