At least 16 Taliban militants were killed after US drones fired 18 missiles at Datta Khel village in North Waziristan of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on February 2, according to Daily Times. Local administration and intelligence officials confirmed the deaths after the missiles reportedly struck Taliban hideouts and a training centre at three places in the village. “Up to eight US drones fired some 18 missiles at multiple Taliban targets in Datta Khel village,” a senior security official said. “At least 16 militants were killed in the missile strikes,” the official added.

Daily Times quoting Chairman of US Joint Chiefs Staff Admiral Mike Mullen at a Congressional hearing on February 3 reports that Pakistan has reversed the Taliban territorial gains through a series of military operations and also advocated Washington’s help towards resolving the India-Pakistan tensions for South Asian stability. The top American military officer, however, warned that the Afghanistan Taliban were gaining influence in Afghanistan and security situation in the region remained serious. Mullen also urged a long-term US commitment to Pakistan as he appeared with Defence Secretary Robert Gates to testify on President Barack Obama’s 2010-11 requests for USD 192 billion for Afghanistan and Iraq wars in the next year and a half. “South Asian security tensions and political dynamics significantly impact our objectives in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The longstanding animosity and mistrust between Pakistan and India complicates regional efforts,” Mullen told the Senate Armed Services Committee in a prepared statement. Yet, he stated: “India and Pakistan must both be our partners for the long term.”

Calling Pakistan’s anti-militancy efforts over 2009 “terrific”, Unite States Defence Secretary Robert Gates on February 9 said Pakistanis are in the driver’s seat in combating Taliban on their soil, reports Daily Times. In an interview with FOX News, Gates also reaffirmed Washington’s confidence in the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. “They’re going to go at their own pace and in their own way. We will help them as much as possible,” he remarked about Pakistan’s efforts. To a question on the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons in the wake of recent terrorist attacks in the country, Gates reiterated his confidence, saying, “I would just echo what the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said. We’re comfortable with the security.” Gates claimed that al Qaeda, the Taliban in Pakistan, and the Taliban in Afghanistan are all working together and argued that the problem should be attacked as a whole. He said, “al Qaeda is helping the Pakistani Taliban to destabilise the Pakistani Government. There is evidence that al Qaeda is helping them plan these attacks, the targeting, the training capabilities and so on.”

A Taliban spokesman, who identified himself as Yousuf Ahmadi, said the new bomb has been named after Taliban ‘leader’ Mullah Omar. “It’s an effective bomb, which can’t be detected by mine-sweeping vehicles and it causes more deaths,” Ahmadi added.

A US drone attack killed at least three Taliban militants in the North Waziristan Agency of FATA on February 15, security officials said, according to Daily Times. “The US drone fired one missile, which hit a vehicle. According to our reports, three Taliban were killed,” an unnamed security official said. However, local officials put the death toll at four, saying the drone targeted a vehicle carrying Taliban militants just as they were leaving Tabi Ghundi Kala village. “It was a drone attack. Two missiles were fired into the vehicle. Four Taliban were killed,” said a local security official. Meanwhile, intelligence officials provided conflicting accounts of the nature of the blast and the identities of those killed. Two officials confirmed the drone strike and said it killed three Taliban militants. Two others said the vehicle had hit a landmine and could not confirm the identities of the three killed.

The Ahmedzai Wazir tribes in South Waziristan Agency of FATA on February 15 demanded a separate administrative status for areas under their control during a jirga (council) also attended by Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani, tribal elders said. “We have presented our point of view to Kayani. We told him if one arm is impacted by cancer, doctors recommend its amputation,” the tribal elders told Daily Times over the phone from Wana after attending the jirga at Tanai area. “What has encouraged the Wazirs is the fact that Wazir Taliban leader Mullah Nazir is also demanding that the tribes have separate administrative status, free from Mehsud dominance,” they added. A senior Government official said the issue was being considered under the context of counter-terrorism as the Ahmedzai Wazirs “cooperate with Islamabad more than the Mehsuds”.

An Afghan Taliban spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi, denied a US report that the group’s military commander had been arrested by US and Pakistani forces in a secret operation in Pakistan. “The rumours reported on the arrest of Mullah Baradar are all untrue. It is a big lie,” Yousuf Ahmadi said, adding, “He is currently in Afghanistan, where he is leading all jihadi activities.” Ahmadi charged that the US media report intended to deflect attention from “failures” in a major US-led assault in Marjah in southern Afghanistan.

Daily Times quoting New York Times on February 16 reported that the United States (US) and Pakistani intelligence services arrested the top military ‘commander’ of Taliban, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, in Karachi. Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar was arrested in Karachi “several days ago” by US and Pakistani intelligence services, said the New York Times and other US media, citing unnamed US Government officials. Confirming the report, Reuters quoted a US official as saying that the Taliban’s top military ‘commander’ had been arrested in Pakistan in a joint raid. “I would call it significant,” said another US official of Mullah Baradar’s arrest. “But even when you get their leaders, they’ve shown an amazing resilience to bounce back. It’s an adaptive organisation,” he added. The details of Baradar’s apparent arrest were unclear, but the New York Times said the Taliban ‘commander’ was arrested by operatives from Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and US’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). One Pakistani officer said Baradar was arrested 10 days ago with the assistance of the US and “was talking” to his interrogators. Baradar is in charge of the Taliban’s military operations and leadership council, and was a close associate of al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden before the September 11, 2001, attacks, added the New York Times.

The Interior Minister Rehman Malik branded as “propaganda” reports that the top Taliban military ‘commander’ had been arrested in a joint Pakistani-US spy operation. Addressing reporters outside parliament in Islamabad, Rehman Malik stopped short of either confirming or denying the media reports saying, “We are verifying all those we have arrested. If there is any big target [among them], I will ... [let the] nation [know]. If the New York Times gives information, it is not divine truth, it can be wrong. We have joint intelligence sharing and no joint investigation, nor joint raids.”
