Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad said that the latest round of fighting began at 4:30 am when the militants attacked a check-post and the troops responded with mortar and small arms fire. He informed: "It is going on and helicopters are still engaged by law enforcing agencies… According to the information I have from the police and Frontier Constabulary, between 60 to 70 miscreants were killed in Swat's areas of Khwazakhela today." Locals of Khwazakhela, the main point of fighting on November 1, said that the military helicopters started strikes at 4 am, leading to an exodus of the local populace for safer places in the upper parts of the district – Madyan, Bahrain, Miandam and other places. Mortar shells were fired at the Taliban's alleged hideouts at Baryam, Salandai, Imam Dherai, Koza Bandai from the FC camp near Mingora, airport and other areas.

According to Daily Times, a militant hideout, once owned by the late Taliban commander, Mullah Dadullah, was destroyed in North Waziristan, killing nine unidentified people on November 2. Two foreign militants were among the dead, sources added. Residents and local sources said that the drones flew over the site in the village of Danday Darpakhel before two missiles hit the site. Local sources said that 12 militants were also injured in the blast. The house was used as a training camp and explosives store by militants loyal to Baitullah Mehsud, the leader of local Taliban. Meanwhile, the Military spokesman, Major General Waheed Arshad, said his forces were not involved. He further added, "The army has not fired any weapon in the area."

Sporadic clashes continued between local Taliban fighters and law enforcement agencies in four subdivisions of Swat, reports The News. Security forces based in Fizzagat, Frontier Constabulary Camp at Kanju and Saidu Sharif airport fired rockets and used mortar guns to target Taliban strongholds at Matta, Khawazakhela, Kabal and Charbagh subdivisions. The militants retaliated by firing at security forces. A minor boy received injuries when a mortar shell fired by security forces hit his family home in Shakardara area of Matta. Several other houses at Shakardara, Golra and other mountainous villages of the subdivision were badly damaged due to heavy shelling by security forces. A Taliban spokesman claimed that they had arrested an alleged spy at Shanqwatai area of Matta subdivision. The identity of the man was not revealed.

Shakilur Rehman, owner and chief executive of Jang Group, received an email by a Taliban outfit threatening to blow up the printing press and the staff of the Jang publications unless they stopped printing photographs of young women, reports Daily Times. Rehman said he had been subjected to great pressure and threats since the beginning of 2007, including an attempt on his life, for which he had filed a criminal complaint in a city police station in Karachi. He said that he had faced the pressures and challenges to the best of his ability but found it necessary to inform the media community of the threatening situation faced by him. The All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS), the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) and the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) reportedly condemned the intimidation and threats directed against Rehman, owner and chief executive of the country’s largest media group.

Around 500 local Taliban militants took over control of Shangla district headquarter Alpuri on November 13-evening, occupying the District Police Office (DPO), District Coordination Office (DCO) and police lines offices without facing any resistance from the government, eyewitness and a local official told Daily Times. Eyewitnesses said the armed militants urged locals to stay calm and extend all possible support to them. Alpuri union council Nazim Sabir told Daily Times that the armed militants, led by Maulana Muhammad Alam, a close associate of TNSM leader Maulana Fazlullah, captured the district. “All government functionaries, including the DPO and DCO, left the area the moment they heard of the fall of Shangla Top police station, located at the border between Swat and Shangla,” Sabir said. Taliban commander Maulana Muhammad Alam was quoted as saying that no one would be harmed nor would any private or state property be damaged. “We only struggle for the enforcement of Shariah,” he told Alpuri residents.

Militants captured Puran subdivision, the hometown of provincial president Pakistan Muslim League-Q Engineer Amir Muqam, in the Shangla district on November 16. Militant spokesman Sirajuddin told The News that they had captured the subdivision and later handed it over to a commission of local pro-Taliban Ulema (cleric) and elders on the condition they would not allow the security forces and police in the town. "They signed an agreement with us and promised physical and financial assistance," he claimed. He said that the Ulema and elders would now run affairs of the subdivision, as police and other government officials had disappeared before militants’ arrival. Residents in Puran said after their arrival in the town, the militants set up check-posts at Yakh Tangi, Dherai Top on Chakesar Road and Dua village. "By capturing both the subdivisions – Alpuri and Puran – they virtually took hold of the whole Shangla district," said a local union council official.

In what appears to be a revenge action for sectarian killings at Parachinar in the FATA, the Taliban beheaded three truck drivers near Darra Adamkhel in the NWFP on November 19, according to Dawn. The drivers belonging to the Juzara and Marai areas of Kohat district had been abducted by the Taliban on November 18-evening when they were passing through the Darra Adamkhel bazaar on their way to the troubled Kurram Agency. The three were identified as Islam, Fateh Ali and Rafique. After the incident, a mosque in Darra Bazaar came under fire when prayers were in progress. Six people were injured in the attack. Tribesmen reportedly chased the culprits and killed one of them and arrested another. Later, the Taliban took away the body from the Zarghunkhel hospital. According to unconfirmed reports, the Taliban had abducted three more people from Darra Adamkhel after checking their national identity cards.

More than eighty per cent students of the Higher Secondary Girls School in Oghi in the Mansehra district have started going to school in burqa (veil) following a threat by the local Taliban, Dawn reported. The principal of the only higher secondary girls’ school in the Oghi revenue division of Mansehra had received a threatening letter from the Taliban last week asking him to make it compulsory for students from Class 7 to Class 12 to wear burqa. The letter said: “So far we did not carry out any activity in district Mansehra but we want to make it clear that if you do not make the burqa compulsory for students you will face serious consequences, take it is a warning.”

Daily Times reported that fresh reinforcements have reached Swat amid increasing fears of an operation against suspected militants in the Dir district bordering Afghanistan’s Kunar province where al Qaeda and the Taliban were giving a stiff resistance to the American and coalition forces. Authorities disconnected cell-phone services during the army movement to prevent the militants from using the service to plot attacks on the arriving soldiers. “The soldiers are positioning themselves in Timergara, the Lower Dir’s headquarters, and, as we know, this district is underlined for hosting militants, even foreigners,” said official sources in Peshawar, capital of NWFP.

AFP reported that local Taliban militants seized and burned thousands of kilogrammes of food destined for pregnant women from a hospital in South Waziristan, officials said on November 25. The food, mainly lentils and cooking oil, had been supplied by the aid charity Save the Children to feed pregnant women suffering from malnutrition. A Taliban activist said they were destroyed because “foreign NGOs want to harm our future generations.” An administration official, Tariq Salim, said the Health Ministry officials had not consulted him before distributing food directly to the women.
