Five people were killed and two others sustained injuries during a bomb blast in the eastern town of Trincomalee on January 2, according to BBC. Issuing a statement on January 13, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) said that it strongly condemns the latest attack on Navy personnel in Chettikulam on January 12 and extended its sympathies to the families affected by the brutal murder. "Over 100 people were killed last month, half of which were civilians. Killings and serious attacks continue and the situation is getting worse. It is our assessment that if the parties don't react immediately they risk going back to war," the SLMM release stated. It added, "various actors in the international community have blamed the LTTE for attacking Government troops but the LTTE has continuously denied any involvement. The LTTE claims that 'the People' are behind the attacks on the military. The SLMM finds this explanation unacceptable. It is safe to say that LTTE involvement cannot be ruled out and we find the LTTE's indifference to these attacks worrying."

The Norwegian truce monitors in Sri Lanka have said that a grenade blast at their premises on January 13-night was the first direct attack on their organisation, according to BBC. Several vehicles were damaged but no-one was hurt in the overnight blast in the eastern town of Batticaloa. The explosion occurred when the car was parked at a garage of the Norwegian-led Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM). The blast came hours after the SLMM issued a statement blaming the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for a latest upsurge in attacks against Government forces and also asked the Government to disarm paramilitary units that target the LTTE.
