A top Laskhar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was killed on January 14 in a fierce gun battle in Sopore town of Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. A Defense spokesman said that based on specific intelligence about presence of militants in Sofi Hamam Chankhan area of the Sopore town, a joint operation was launched by Rashtriya Rifles units of Army and the Police, resulting into killing of one militant and recovery of one AK 47 rifle, 3 magazines, 89 rounds of ammunition, one UBGL, three UBGL rounds and other war like stores. The identity of the terrorist has been established as Abu Sufiyaz.

Security Force (SF) personnel on January 18 killed two ‘divisional commanders’ of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) during an operation in Saidpora village of Sopore in Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. A Police spokesman while giving details about the operation said that Sopore Police along with 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army and 177 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a cordon and search operation in Saidpora village. The militants fired upon the joint search party, triggering an encounter in which two militants were killed. Two Pakistani militants Asadullah of LeT and Ramzan of JeM were killed in the gun battle. There was no collateral damage to any person or property during the operation. Two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, 140 rounds and one pistol were recovered from them. Earlier, it was reported that two JeM militants were killed in an encounter with SFs in Sopore town of north Kashmir.

Four persons, including a Commanding Officer (CO) of the Army, a Head Constable (HC) of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and two militants were killed in an encounter with militants in Tral area of Pulwama District on January 27, reports Daily Excelsior. Army’s 42 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and SOG and 185 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cordoned off Handoora village after receiving information about presence of two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants. The militants hiding in the house of Jalal-ud-Din Khan opened fire on the search party of the troops injuring CO of the 42 RR, Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, Signalman Nilesh Kumar and Police HC, Sanjeev Singh. While being evacuated to the Army Hospital, Srinagar, Colonel Munindra Nath Rai and HC Sanjeev Singh succumbed to their injuries. The gun battle continued for about an hour in which two militants identified as Abid Ahmad Khan alias Hamza and Sheraz Ahmad Dar were killed. 2 AK rifles, 4 AK magazines, many rounds of AK rifle and one hand grenade were recovered from the encounter site.

One Jammu and Kashmir Police Officer has been killed and three Security Force (SF) personnel were injured in a fierce gunfight with terrorists in Baramulla District, reports IBN Live on April 2. Officials said that following specific information about the presence of a group of terrorists, a joint team of Army's 29 Rashtriya Rifles and Jammu and Kashmir Police Special Operations Groups (SOG) Pattan launched a search and cordon operation at Sultanpora village of Baramulla District. As soon as the joint team of forces intensified their search, the terrorists opened fire upon them. The forces retaliated resulting in heavy firing from both the sides.

One militant identified as Khalid Bashir, cousin of HM ‘commander’, was killed during an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in Kamla forest area of Buchoo in Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama District on April 13, reports Daily Excelsior. A Defence spokesman said: “Consequent to the recent attack by militants on the security forces Army had intensified search operations at places from where inputs about likely presence of militants was being received. One such operation at Kamla Top resulted in contact being established South of Hurdu Mir area of Tral”. “The terrorist were effectively engaged and one terrorist was eliminated. Search of the area led to recovery of the body of the slain terrorist, two AK 47 rifles and large quantity of war like stores’, said the spokesman. Army detained three persons from the forest area and they have been handed over to the Police for questioning. Soon after the news about killing of a man reached Tral, people protested against it alleging that he was a civilian.

Acting on specific information about the presence of militants at Lonepora village in Heff Shirmal area of Shopian District, Army and Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off the area. During the searches militants hiding in the area fired on Army injuring two of them. Army asked the Sarpanch (head of Panchayat, village level local self Government institution) of Safawali, Kumkadi, Trumnad, Manigah and its adjoining areas to make announcements in the villages asking people not to venture out. Acting on specific information, a joint team of 39 RR and Police launched a search operation in the Khanetar area of Mendhar tehsil (revenue unit) of Poonch District and busted a militant hideout, official sources said. The seized cache of arms and ammunition from the hideout include one pistol with a magazine and 61 rounds, one AK magazine, 105 AK rounds, one radio set, four Chinese grenades, one radio set, one Pathani suit and one blanket, they said.

A gun battle broke out between Security Forces (SFs) and militants in the Manigah forest area of Kupwara District on November 27, reports Daily Excelsior. According to the report, the SFs have launched massive search operation in number of forest areas in Manigah following killing of Lieutenant Colonel Santosh Mahadik on November 17, 2015. They intercepted the militant group on November 27 in the afternoon at Peer Mohalla area of Haji Naka in Manigah, leading to the gun battle. No injury was reported on either side. Superintendent of Police (SP), Kupwara, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat said that the operation is on in Manigah since last 13 days. He said that since then the joint team of security forces had established contacts with the militants intermittently resulting into the killing of one militant so far. On November 22, an Army Colonel S. K. Natt was injured in the encounter and on November 23, Army eliminated one militant in Manigah. Earlier, on November 10, the Army had recovered the body of a militant in Kumkadi forests of Manigah who is believed to have died due to severe cold.
