Anantnag District Police and Army personnel killed Abu Aatif alias Shadaakh, Pakistani ‘divisional commander’ of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), along with his Pakistani bodyguard, Syed Moin, during an encounter at NiainaBatpora village in Pulwama-Anantnag belt in south Kashmir and arrested a young woman, Mubeena Akhtar, believed to be Abu’s wife, reports Daily Excelsior. Two AK-56 rifles, one satellite phone and three mobile phones were recovered from the possession of the slain militants. Sources said that on the basis of some diaries recovered from the destroyed hideout, Pulwama Police conducted a raid on another militant hideout near a sports stadium in Pulwama town and recovered a large number of CDs besides INR 1, 25, 000. The report added that Abu had planned and executed suicide attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) formation at Ramur in Uttar Pradesh on January 1, 2008 and an attack on Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore on December 28, 2005.

Five people of the same family, including four children, were killed and 18 persons were injured when militants lobbed a grenade at the crowded Batmaloo bus stand in the capital Srinagar on July 24-afternoon. According to The Hindu, the victims belonged to a family of migrant labourers boarding a bus for Jammu for onward journey to their native places. The deceased were identified as 12-year-old Khushboo and her three brothers Adil (4), Qayoom (5), and Ajoob (8), all children of Mohammad Afroze of Bihar. The mother Rubina was also killed. Officials at Police Control Room Srinagar said that many of the injured persons were Amarnath pilgrims who had just returned from Sonmarg and were looking for a bus which would carry them to Jammu, Daily Excelsior reported. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

In the Doda district, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants shot dead four members of the family of a surrendered militant. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Raghubir Singh, said the militants intruded into the house of Ghulam Hassan Wani, the surrendered militant, in Bari Marmat village, and opened indiscriminate firing on the inmates killing three persons on the spot and injuring two others. Among the dead were Ghulam Hassan Wani, his wife Azeema Begum, 13-year old daughter Ashiva Bano and nephew Tauseef. Wani surrendered in 2002 and was acting as an informer to the security forces. The militants pasted a poster outside the deceased’s house asking the locals not to bury the bodies of the dead and warned of dire consequences if anybody did. However, under police cover, the bodies were later buried by the locals.

Leela Karan Sharma, the Chairman of Sangharsh Samiti - a conglomerate of political, social and religious outfits formed to demand land in favour of the Shrine Board - said, "We would not allow the martyrdom of Kuldip Kumar to go waste and will take this agitation to its logical conclusion. A Defence spokesman said that some unidentified militants fired three rounds from a Rocket Propelled Gun on the Indian post in Nangi Tekri area of Krishna Ghati sub-sector. Immediately after this, there was heavy firing by Pakistani troops from a nearby post, across the Line of Control (LoC). The spokesman added that Indian troops exercised restraint and did not retaliate. This is sixth incident of cease-fire violation by Pakistani troops in the Poonch sector in the last one month.

At least one soldier was killed in a gun-battle on July 28 as Defence authorities claimed that Pakistani troops violated the November 2003 cease-fire between India and Pakistan with crossing over to the Indian side on the Line of Control (LoC). Defence spokesman, Colonel A. K. Mathur, told Daily Excelsior that the Indian Army noticed movement of a group of 10 to 12 Pakistani soldiers at Kayian Bal in Leepa Valley at 1530 hours (IST). According to him, Pakistani soldiers crossed the LoC and opened fire when they were challenged to halt. He said that one Indian soldier, identified as Mahesh, was killed. He said that the Indian troops retaliated and forced the Pakistani soldiers to retreat. "Fierce gunbattle is going on as troops from both sides are using light combat weapons", Col. Mathur said. He did not confirm wire service and television channel reports that four of the retreating Pakistani soldiers had been killed. Col Mathur said it was for the first time since the November 2003 truce that the Pakistani troops had violated the cease-fire.

"Yes, there has again been a violation of the cease-fire by the Pakistani troops," a Defence Ministry spokesman said. He said Pakistani troops again opened indiscriminate fire from across the border in the same Nowgam sector where the two Armies exchanged fire for about 12 hours before the flag meeting on July 29. The spokesman said there had been no report of any casualty in the fresh firing but added that more details were being collected about the attack from the forward post. Official sources said Indian troops also retaliated and the intermittent firing was going on when reports last came in. The damage suffered by the Pakistani troops was not immediately known, they said.
