Addressing the members of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on March 1, Maldives’ President Abdulla Yameen stated that anyone who misuses his powers and submits its country to the dangerous circumstances, is the most traitorous to the Maldives, reports Maldives Times. It has been a duty and responsibility of the Head of the State to protect the country and its interests in all situations and would never let anything caused damage to the country, said Yameen. The Maldives Embassy in India has released a statement that the Maldives had declined to join the Military exercise ‘Milan’ invitation from India because of the ongoing political crisis and the State of Emergency (SoE) in the Maldives and not because of any ‘hidden’ tension between two nations [India and Maldives], reports Mihaaru on March 1. Due to the SoE, all Security personnel were required at heightened level of readiness to dealt with any situation. As a part of procedure, during the practises of SoE like situations, the Armed officers called-off from Military exercises conducted overseas, and there was nothing ‘special’ in the decision regarding joining the ‘Milan’. India and Maldives share a long history of excellent Defence and Military cooperation and will continue the same indefinitely, read a statement released by the Maldives Embassy in India.

Maldives Opposition Party’s supporters on March 6 organised a rally in Sri Lanka against the Maldivian Government, urging to release the nine political prisoner and re-instate 12 Member of Parliaments (MPs) with immediate effect, reports Mihaaru. Around 100 protesters gathered at front gates of the Maldivian Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka, carrying placards, banners and posters in support of the political leaders and other administrative officers arrested during the ongoing State of Emergency (SoE). The protest in Sri Lanka has exposed the weakness and unpopularity of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)—the Opposition party in Maldives. These issues are not implemented or resolved by the Embassy. Around 10,000 Maldivians are living in Sri Lanka and merely 100 Maldivians joined the protest. This highlights the unpopularity of MDP, said Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mohamed Shareef.
