According to Daily Star, Altaf Hossain alias BDR Altaf, second-in-command of outlawed left-wing extremist Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddha faction), who is also an accused in the journalist Manik Saha murder case, was killed in an encounter with the police at Malot village in Khulna district on August 20. Another armed cadre of the outfit, Rashed Goldar, was also killed in the encounter, which left four policemen injured. According to the Daily Star, three left wing extremists were killed in an encounter with police personnel in Sadar sub-district of Kushtia district on October 18. At least 20 people including four policemen were also injured in the gun battle. The slain extremists have been identified as cadres of the Jasad Gono Bahini (JGB). Police also recovered 3 rifles, one .22 bore rifle and 42 bullets from the slain extremists after the clash.
