The Golaghat police arrested three suspected Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agents with American currency in their possession on January 6. According to police, the three persons, identified as Mohammed Ahmed Hussain, Ijal Haque and Abdul Khalek, were arrested while they were trying to exchange a bank draft of American dollar with a person in Golaghat. The three suspected ISI agents were trying to exchange the one million American dollar token which amounts to 4.5 crores in rupees. Police also recovered some documents relating to some Bangladeshi Jihadi groups from their possession.

An Assamese poet, Santanu Sarma, was arrested at Malikuchi in Nalbari town on January 7-night on charges of writing seditious material for the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and mobilising opinion against counter-insurgency operations, reports Telegraph. He was reportedly writing and editing material for the ULFA’S mouthpiece, Freedom. The Additional Superintendent of Police (city) Debojit Deori said Sarma was on the "wanted" list since October 2004, when an arrested ULFA conduit, Anil Mazumdar, named him as the lynchpin of the outfit’s network in the city. He said, "We arrested him on the basis of a confessional statement by Mazumdar, who was very close to him. Sarma has denied having any links with Ulfa and is being interrogated by senior police officials."

Police arrested a top leader of the Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANLA), identified as Rupen Lakra, at Baghjan in the Bokajan town of Karbi Anglong district on January 8-night and recovered a huge cache of arms and explosives. Lakra is second only to commander Nirmal Tirki alias David, in the ranks of the outfit. He is also responsible for the bomb blast in the Rajdhani Express in Golaghat district on December 13 that killed four persons. The police later found a sten gun, three AK-47 rifles, an M16 rifle, two .315 rifle, two US-made carbines, a grenade launcher, four bombs, three rifle grenades, six hand grenades and a large amount of ammunition and assorted weapons in a nearby paddy field.

Rupen Lakra, the Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANLA) leader, who was arrested by the police on January 8-night, has reportedly admitted that the cache of arms and ammunition that was dug up from a paddy field after his arrest came from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM). Lakra told interrogators that the ANLA ‘commander-in-chief’ David Tirkey struck the arms deal a few months ago when he was in Dimapur in the guise of a pastor. Three Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) militants were shot dead by the security forces in an operation on February 22 in the Kamalabhati village under Howraghat Police Station in the Karbi Anglong district, according to Telegraph. The militants were reportedly taking shelter in a hut abandoned by farmers in the forest area. Seven other militants were also arrested from the hut. The slain militants have been identified as KLNLF area commander Mekrang Terong, Jarsom Terang and Son Millik. The arrested militants have revealed that they had taken shelter in the hut with the aim of extorting money from the businessmen and tea estate management along the Nagaon- Karbi Anglong border. Two AK-56 rifles, four single barrel guns, 177 rounds of ammunition of assorted weapons were recovered at the site of the encounter.

The arrest came following the earlier detention of three PULF cadres from a rented accommodation at Dispur area, The Sangai Express reported. Additional Superintendent of Police Debojit Deuri said, "During the interrogation of the three PULF cadres on Sunday, our team raided a house in Chasal and could nab Farooq today." Kazi had been hiding in the city for a long time, he added. "The arrest of the PULF cadres from states like Assam, Karnataka [In Mysore on April 27] and other places made it clear that the cadres of the outfit had been on the run from its own state Manipur," Deuri said and added that interrogation is underway to trace more clues regarding the outfit's base in Guwahati. "We have however, no confirmed information whether the outfit was conducting any recruitment in the state," Deuri said. According to Shillong Times, Assam police arrested five more persons from Shantipur in the Nalbari district on November 7, in connection with the Guwahati serial blasts on October 30. The arrested persons were identified as Chandra Bodo, Raju Bodo, Bhola Bodo, Bhupesh Bodo and Arabinda Bodo. A team of Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam police brought the arrested persons from Nalbari to Guwahati for further interrogation. They were arrested in connection with two blasts that rocked Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court and Panbazar area in the city. Meanwhile, police have identified the chassis and engine numbers of the Maruti cars used in Panbazar and Ganeshguri blasts though owners of those cars are yet to be traced. The car used in the Panbazar blast was registered in Delhi, while the car used in Ganeshguri explosion was registered in Arunachal Pradesh.
