A self styled ‘platoon commander’ and a cadre of the I.K. Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS), identified as Danial Muchahary and Rahen Muchahary were arrested after an encounter with a joint team comprising the Police and the Army from Lawdangi area under Dhekiajuli Police station in Sonitpur District on January 2, reports The Sentinel. Police recovered one 7.65 pistol, three round live cartridges, three mobile phones along with six SIM cards from the militants. Police sources said that Danial was the self styled ‘platoon commander’ of NDFB –IKS of ‘38 battalion’ of the outfit.

one person, identified as Rajiv Rajkhowa was arrested by Pengaree Police following a public chastisement at Dwarmara village in Pengaree in Tinsukia District on January 3, reports The Sentinel. The arrested person, Rajiv Rajkhowa, shot a local Village Defence Party (VDP) member, identified as Umesh Rai, at his residence who narrowly escaped death. Then he was caught by the son of the victim with the help of the villagers and later handed him over to Pengaree Police. Local sources said that Rajiv Rajkhowa had served an extortion letter to Rai last year in the name of the ULFA-I. The Police recovered two handmade revolvers and a writing pad belonging to the ULFA from the arrestee.

Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS), identified as Dhananjay Boro alias B.Dahal Thungri (32) was arrested by the Police along with Indian Army at Shantipur area under Runikhata Police Station in Chirang District on January 8, reports The Sentinel. One 9mm Pistol, one magazine and 4 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the arrestee. The Chirang District Superintendent of Police (SP) Shankar Raimedhi said that the militant was a trained NDFB-IKS cadre of 38th batch and after training he had been operating in Baksa District. But he was on the run after anti-militancy operation was intensified in the state.

He was arrested in connection with a case the NIA had registered against ULFA-I in 2013. Sources in NIA said, "He has been taken into custody for six days. In the primary investigation it was revealed that the trio was bound for Jangfai, a remote Rengma Naga village in the hills of Karbi Anglong District. Kohima based Defence PRO Colonel Chiranjeet Konwar said that, the troops of the Jairampur battalion of Assam Rifles (AR) and Assam Police jointly launched an operation at Six mile near Tirap Gate in the Upper Assam District and nabbed the militant. “The militant was trying to terrorize and carryout extortion in Six mile Area near Tirap gate. Post spot interrogation he admitted allegiance to GLA and had come here for collection of money and extortion and to increase influence of GLA in the region,” Colonel Konwar said. This a second apprehension of a senior GLA cadre from this area within a week. "We have arrested the duo based on the statement of Nihal Ray, another member of the outfit, who was arrested from Bonda here [Guwahati] on Monday [July 17]. After a series of interrogations, we came to know that it is an unorganized group which is trying to collect funds," Guwahati commissioner of police Hiren Nath. The two ULFA-I militants were identified as Simanta Rabha and Kusha Rabha of Rongjuli area of Goalpara District and were arrested from the same area. The GNLA cadres are Pillar Sangma, Philip Sangma and Nobin Sangma, the trio was arrested from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills. The modus operandi was such that GNLA Overground Workers would identify potential victims, in this case coal dealers and other businessmen, in the Nangalbibra-Jadigittim coal region of South Garo Hills and they were directed to deliver the money in Assam. “These militants were running the extortion racket in this manner to avoid detection in Garo Hills because many a time the delivery of extortion money was intercepted by us,” said Meghalaya Director General of Police SB Singh.

Sadiya Superintendent of Police (SP) Prasanto Changmai said, "We were working on inputs of extortion calls made to local small traders at Sonpura. The investigation prompted us to believe in the involvement of local youths. We got the mobile number from which the extortion calls were made. On Wednesday [November 1], we arrested Biswajeet from outside the house of one Dhonti of Kakopathar. Dhonti fled from the backdoor. Police suspected that the recovered amount was a part of a cash stash of ULFA-I which could not be converted into legal money. In recent times, several arrested ULFA-I militants have confessed before the Police that the outfit has been facing a severe funds crisis after demonetization. Faced with financial crunch, militant outfit has been trying to recover from their losses by indulging in mass extortion, targeting the business community and tea planters, especially in Upper Assam districts, taking advantage of their close proximity with Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
