On January 7, Meghalaya Police had killed two National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) terrorists in an encounter at Tapadaranchi, near Mendipathar, in East Garo hills district, Meghalaya. Quoting official sources, media reports added that the encounter took place when a group of armed terrorists had been trying to sneak into Tapadarenchi. While one terrorist had been injured and arrested subsequently, the others managed to escape in the cover of darkness. Police recovered a Chinese-made hand grenade from the arrested terrorist.

On February 5, the Meghalaya police reportedly recovered a large cache of arms and ammunitions from a culvert near Wahumkhrah River in Shillong, the capital city. Citing official sources, media reports said that the seizure included two AK 56 rifles, an AK 47 rifle, three carbines, besides a huge quantity of ammunition. Meanwhile, the State police suspect that the arms and ammunition belonged to Dister Marbaniang, a Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) terrorist who was arrested recently. A suspected HNLC terrorist was also subsequently detained for interrogations, reports added.

According to media reports, a National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) terrorist was injured in an encounter with police on March 12, even as Meghalaya State police arrested a self-styled captain of the NDFB, identified as Khaninder Diamary, on March 13, from Raja Bagan, Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi district. Citing Army sources, reports added that, after the Red Horns division of the army and Assam police launched ‘Operation Shamsheer’, a large number of NDFB terrorists have been fleeing towards Byrnihat and areas in the Garo Hills. It also added that, even NDFB terrorists were trying to cross over to Bangladesh through Gasuapara, Gograpara, Angratola and Fhakirtola in South Garo Hills.

Police in Meghalaya seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition from an alleged hideout of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) at Rongdupara, in West Garo Hills district, in a raid conducted on April 10-night. Arms recovered include 11 big shoulder-borne rockets, an AK 56 rifle, several thousands of medium machine gun-ammunition and two communication sets. Reports indicated that ULFA might have procured rockets from the Taliban militia in Afghanistan. A senior police official, on April 11, reportedly said, "We are sure that the arms and ammunition recovered from Rongdupara under Phulbari police station yesterday belong to ULFA militants, who actually got them from the Taliban. It establishes the link between the ULFA and the Afghan militia." No arrest could be made as the terrorists escaped following a brief clash with police.

However, another terrorist escaped from the incident-site. Two 303 guns, four pistols and an unspecified number of ammunition were recovered from the incident-site. According to reports, the police had gathered the information regarding presence of these terrorists at a hideout from two HNLC terrorists arrested earlier, on April 18.

Separately, eight terrorists of the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) were killed in two separate encounters in the West Garo Hills district, on September 26. In the first encounter an ANVC terrorist was killed near Garobadha in West Garo Hills district as terrorists traveling in a vehicle fired at a police party after they were asked to stop. Two other terrorists, including a woman were arrested. The arrested cadres led the police party to a tourist resort at Dakpgre near Tura, from where eight other ANVC cadres were arrested. Three of these terrorists assisted security forces to another nearby camp of the outfit at Bolrenggre where the second encounter occurred. In an exchange of fire, four ANVC terrorists camping at Bolrenggre and three terrorists who were accompanying the SF personnel from Dakopggre were killed. Some other terrorists from the camp managed to escape. Security forces recovered one AK-56 rifle with twelve rounds of live ammunition, one Pakistan-made.32 pistol with seven rounds of ammunition, two Chinese hand grenades and some incriminating documents including demand notes and photos from the encounter site.
