Troops observed a group of four to five militants, trying to infiltrate into Indian Territory, and challenged the militants who opened fire. This forced the militants to retrieve to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). One of escaped militants got injured in the firing. Pakistan Army also resorted to ceasefire violation to give cover to the infiltrators, official sources said. As many as 45 truce violations were reported in 2011 along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan Army violated ceasefire at Sabjian sector at 10.50am by firing eight to 10 rounds of Pika gun on the Indian Army personnel, who were engaged in repair work of fencing along the LoC, which had been damaged during the winter due to heavy snowfall. There were no casualties or damage on Indian side in firing by Pakistan Army, sources said but added that the fencing work has been stopped for the time being. Sources said Pakistan Army had been objecting to fencing work presuming that the troops were laying new fencing. Last week also, they had fired at the troops at same place with the same motive of blocking the fence repair. This is the 10th ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the Indo-Pak border in 2012 and the third this month (May).

Two troopers were injured on June 17 as Pakistan continued to violate ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC), according to Daily Excelsior. Colonel R.K. Palta said, “Pakistan resorted to unprovoked firing, using heavy automatic and small arms fire, from 12 different posts at 10.pm Saturday (June 16). Later at 11.15 pm, Pakistan fired mortars and a large number of high explosive rounds on Indian posts in the same area. The firing continued till 12.30 am on Sunday (June 17),” as reported on June 18, by dnaindia.com. The Indian Army also retaliated by controlled effective firing to the Pakistani provocation. “Troops exercised utmost restraint. The response to Pakistani firing, though controlled, was effective fire. The Indian Army continues to maintain a high level of alert all along the LoC (Line of Control),” he added. The tension started on June 11, when Pakistani forces violated the ceasefire at Krishna Ghati sub-sector of Poonch sector in which a Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was injured. He succumbed to wounds in the night of June 13. Efforts to de-escalate the situation received a jolt when Pakistan postponed the flag meeting scheduled to be held at Chakan-Da-Bagh on June 16, without giving any reasons. The Cross-LoC trade via the Chakan-Da-Bagh crossing also remained suspended, awaiting de-escalation of the situation in the Krishna Ghati Sector. The crisis further deepened on June 16 night when Pakistan Army once again fired on Indian posts in the Krishna Ghati sector without any provocation.

Pakistan troopers resorted to heaviest firing of the year in almost entire Krishna Ghati sector (Poonch District) along Line of Control (LoC) on the nights of November 25, and November 26, as the Cease-fire Agreement (CFA) along LoC and International Border (IB) between India and Pakistan completed nine years, reports Daily Excelsior. Pakistan troopers fired more than 6,000 rounds including 5,000 from heavy machine guns which were reportedly aimed at expressing displeasure against the Pakistan’s leadership. The ceasefire came into force on November 26, 2003, reducing mounting tensions between the two states in the wake of attack on Indian Parliament (December 13, 2001) after which India had deployed heavy troops along the India-Pakistan border. Sources said that it was for the first time in 2012, during nine years truce, that Pakistani Rangers directly targeted civilians on the Indian side. No casualties or damages were reported on the Indian side of the border, however, due to the firing, forests in Krishna Ghati caught fire, which was controlled by locals and Army personnel.
