Offices of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Government of India and Directorate of Information of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir were destroyed during a fire even as security forces (SFs) killed two Fidayeen (suicide squad) terrorists who attacked and occupied the three-storeyed building in the Press Enclave area of capital Srinagar on March 9. Daily Excelsior reported that two suicide terrorists with AK-47 rifles appeared at the Press Enclave and lobbed hand grenades on the armed guards of the Special Services Bureau (SSB), manning the entrance of the PIB building, at 1830 hours. Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, K Rajendra Kumar, confirmed that both the Fidayeen were later shot dead by troops and three SSB guards had sustained injuries. While no other casualty was known till last reports came in, the building housing the twin offices of the Daily Excelsior and British Broadcasting Corporation suffered damages due to grenade explosions and intensive firing from both sides.

According to Daily Excelsior, all the separatist outfits, including the two factions of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), and terrorist groups had asked the Kashmiri voters to boycott the elections. Terrorists caused Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and grenade explosions in close vicinity of polling stations at Pattan, Sumlar Bandipore, Pazalpora Rafiabad, Baramulla, Sopore, Rangat Langet, Wayil Kralpora and Hathlangoo Sopore. While at Sumlar, two polling officials and four police personnel sustained injuries, unidentified terrorists targeted the vehicle of an NGO, namely Coalition of Civil Societies (CCS), with a powerful IED blast at Chandigam in the Lolab segment of Kupwara district. Two persons, including a journalist, were killed and four others were wounded in this blast. Further, one security force (SF) personnel was killed and seven persons, including five SF personnel, were injured when terrorists hurled a grenade towards a polling booth at Arampora-Sopore. Terrorists also opened fire at a polling booth in Pazalpora-Rafiabad killing one Central Reserve Police Force personnel.

In a separate incident at Hadipora in the Rafiabad area of Baramulla district, terrorists fired a rifle grenade on a Government school building which will be a polling station on April 20, today. Two days prior to polling in the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) constituency, terrorists launched an unsuccessful attack on the headquarters of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Maulana Azad Road in the capital Srinagar on April 23. Ten persons, including four security force (SF) personnel and two photojournalists, were wounded when unidentified terrorists lobbed two hand grenades on the JKPCC premises. While the Al Mansoorain, a front outfit of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the grenade attack through a release to a local news agency, another outfit, Kashmir Freedom Force, has also reportedly claimed responsibility for the same. Elsewhere in Srinagar, ten persons were reportedly injured when terrorists lobbed a hand grenade towards a Police post at Rambagh.

Eight persons were wounded when terrorists lobbed a hand grenade targeting the residence of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate from Baramulla parliamentary constituency, Nizamuddin Bhat, at Press Enclave in the capital Srinagar. The grenade fell short of the intended target and exploded at the entrance of the house, injuring eight persons, including a photojournalist and one police personnel, said sources in Srinagar. According to Daily Excelsior, Bhat, who was employed with several news organisations prior to joining the ruling PDP recently, had shifted his residence and was not present during the time of the attack.

Meanwhile, in the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sufti Sayeed’s home town in Bijbehara, terrorists hurled a rifle grenade towards a polling station injuring one police personnel. The terrorists also attacked the residence of Legislator, Abdul Rahman, in Anantnag district without causing any loss of life or injuries. Official sources said Abdul Majeed, a news reporter posted in the District Information Office at Doda, was killed and 21 persons, including three police personnel, were injured in a grenade attack on the district hospital in Doda town, which was aimed at former Minister of State for Home and National Conference candidate Khalid Najeeb Suhrawardhy. A terrorist, who is believed to have hurled the grenade, managed to escape from the incident site. Meanwhile, another terrorist lobbed a hand grenade on a polling station at village Aal in the Udhyanpur area, about 40 kilometers from Doda town causing damage to the station and injuries to two police personnel, who were part of a police party manning the polling booth.
