An infiltrator was injured as injured as troops foiled Pakistani firing-backed infiltration bid of militants on the Line of Control (LoC) at Tarkundi in Gambhir sector of Poonch District in the night of January 3, reports Daily Excelsior. Troops observed a group of four to five militants, trying to infiltrate into Indian Territory, and challenged the militants who opened fire. This forced the militants to retrieve to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). One of escaped militants got injured in the firing. Pakistan Army also resorted to ceasefire violation to give cover to the infiltrators, official sources said. As many as 45 truce violations were reported in 2011 along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. Nine Security Force personnel were killed and nearly 50 injured in various firing incidents along the border between 2008 and 2011.

A civilian was killed and five others including two Policemen were injured when militants carried out serial and well-coordinated attack against Police at Sopore town of Sopore District on January 7, reports Daily Excelsior. In the firing between militants and police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a shopkeeper Mehrajudin Hajjam was killed on the spot. Three other shopkeepers, Haji Muhammad Ramzan Khuru, Tariq Ahmad Langu of Shams Pan and Muhammad Muzaffar Bisati of Modern Jewellery shop were injured. Two Police men were also injured in the militant firing. They have been identified as Shabir Ahmad and Altaf Ahmad.

One militant was also injured in the earlier reported January 7 serial and coordinated attacks by militants, targeting Policemen, which killed a civilian and injured five persons, three civilians and two Policemen, in the Sopore area of Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. Giving the details, Superintendent of Police (SP, Sopore), Imtiaz Ahmad said that militants fired at Sopore Police Station at around 10.50am. However, no one was injured in the attack. The SP immediately dispatched a reinforcement party to the Police Station to take on militants. The party included the escort gypsy of the SP. When the mobile bunker of the Police crossed the Main Chowk, the gypsy following it was caught in a traffic jam. The two Policemen came out to clear the traffic and a group of militants fired at them resulting in an encounter that lasted for about half an hour. In the firing between militants and Police, a shopkeeper Mehrajudin Hajjam was killed on the spot. Three other shopkeepers and two Policemen were also injured in the militant firing. When they were being removed to the hospital for treatment, militants hurled a grenade towards the vehicle in which they were being carried near General Bus Stand. However, one was injured in the attack, Police added.

Five Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in an encounter with the Security Forces (SFs) in the Kramhoora forest area of Handwara in Kupwara District on April 5, reports Daily Excelsior. Superintendent of Police (SP, Handwara), Choudery Aslam said that SFs launched a joint operation early in the morning in the Kramhoora forests. The SP said that during the operation militants fired upon the SFs resulting in a fierce encounter that lasted for several hours. The identity of the militants is being ascertained; he said adding that five AK rifles were recovered from the dead militants. The SP said that firing has stopped but the operation is going on and it may continue tomorrow (April 6, today) also as the SFs apprehend that there are few more militants in the area. The SP said that the five militants killed today were part of the same group which was killed on March 28. The SP said that these militants were operating from the forests at least for last one year. He said that SFs were planning operation against the militants operating in these dense forests for last few months. He said that around 15 LeT militants were still operating in the Rajwar forests that have dense vegetation and it gave ample cover to the militants.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG, Doda-Ramban range) Gareeb Dass said Akhtar Hussain was being searched since May 2 as intercepts and Intelligence inputs revealed his involvement in the gun battle in which Army solder Noor Hussain, also a resident of Pati Mahal was killed. Akhtar was untraced since then, the DIG said, adding he was finally traced in a mountain at Pati Mahal and was asked to surrender. The militants initially fled towards a forest area but later took position there and started firing at the security personnel, who retaliated. In about 20 minutes exchange of firing, the militant was killed. Army or police didn’t suffer any casualties in the operation. One AK-47 rifle, two magazines and 25 rounds were recovered from the possession of slain militant. Akhtar had reportedly taken shelter in the house of one Abdul Rashid forcibly, official sources said. Police was questioning Rashid.

Security Forces (SFs) in the morning of May 22 foiled an infiltration attempt by the militants on the Line of Control (LoC) at Balakote sector in Poonch District killing one Pakistani militant and forcing two to three others to retrieve, reports Daily Excelsior. An Army trooper was injured in exchange of firing with militants. Official sources said that the SFs observed movement of a group of three to four militants at Rani Gali in Tarkundi area of Balakote sector. "When the militants reached close to the LoC, they were challenged and fired upon. The militants took positions close to the LoC and tried to sneak into this side by firing on the troops. Exchange of firing continued for more than 40 minutes after which two to three militants were seen crawling back to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK)’’, sources said. They added that searches were conducted along the LoC and dead body of one of the militants was recovered from the spot. However, no recoveries were made from his possession. "Usually, weapon of the slain militant is taken by the fleeing intruders’’, sources, adding the weapon might have even fallen somewhere.

An Army trooper was killed, while two Army troopers, including an officer, were injured in the encounter. The Army recovered two AK 47 rifles, six magazine, 150 rounds, two Matrix sheet, four maps, two wireless sets, two GPS, one compass, 2 pouches and Indian currency from the dead militants. The Army in the night of September 24 launched an operation in the maize fields and forests of Haril in Handwara after they received information about the presence of militants in the area. The militants fired at the Army party resulting in a fierce encounter. In the morning of September 25, the Army party was again fired at by militants. Army returned the fire killing one militant. The gun fight continued till the afternoon resulting in the killing of another militant at around 1pm. One Army trooper was killed and an Army commando, Captain Manish and Army trooper were injured in the encounter. As per the matrix sheets, maps and GPS devices recovered from the militant who was killed early in the morning it appeared that he was a top ‘commander’ of the LeT. The militant group that was trapped in the Handwara forests appeared to have recently infiltrated. The Army sources said that it was a group of around eight militants that was trapped by the Army, which was using surveillance helicopters to track the movement of the group.

Army troops noticed the movement of 2-3 infiltrators near the LoC in Keran. The infiltrators were challenged and fired upon by the Army but they managed to flee back to PoK. The infiltrators also fired back and firing continued for several hours. However, no casualties were reported. Later, the Army recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition that was kept in six gunny bags left behind by the infiltrators. The recovered arms and ammunition include 10 AK-47 Rifles with 20 magazines, 98 Chinese made pistols (.30 mauser) with 196 magazines and two Sub Machine Guns (.30 Cal, folding Butt) with four magazines. All these weapons were Chinese make, wrapped in Chinese newspapers and entire package material used was also Chinese.

Official sources said troops observed movement of militants trying to infiltrate into Indian Territory on surveillance gadgets installed between Roshni and Gun Hill Posts at Balnoi sector of Mendhar at 2am. Troops challenged the militants when they reached close to the fence and asked them to surrender. The militants opened firing and made attempts to sneak into this side. A heavy exchange of gun fighting between militants and the troops continued till 3.30am in which two infiltrators were killed. As the Army personnel were engaged in searches, Pakistani troops started heavy firing on Indian positions at 5.30am in an apparent bid to facilitate infiltration by remaining militants. The firing from Pakistan side continued till 8am, sources said. However, an effective retaliation by the troops forced rest of the militants to retreat to PoK. Army didn’t suffer any casualties in the firing. Troops conducted searches on the LoC and recovered bodies of both the slain militants along with a large quantity of arms, ammunition and other items. Inspector General of Police (IGP, Kashmir), S M Sahai said that Muzamil was involved in hatching a conspiracy to bomb Delhi markets. With the two killings, the operation that was launched on October 20 ended. On October 20, SFs had launched a search operation in the area after a tip off about the presence of two top LeT ‘commanders’. The militants opened fire from a house resulting into an encounter. One Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper was injured in the initial fire. SFs later rescued about 60-70 civilians, including women and children, who were trapped in the encounter and halted the operation in the night. The operation was resumed in the morning of October 21 as SFs tried to storm the target house, triggering an encounter. An Army trooper and Policeman were injured during the initial gun battle in the morning. The intermittent firing continued till afternoon in which both the militants were killed. A ‘divisional commander’ of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was among three top militants killed in two separate incidents in Cherhar Tujar and Mundji areas of Sopore District on December 13, reports Daily Excelsior. Police identified the dead ‘divisional commander’ of LeT for North Kashmir as Pakistani national Abu Zarar. He was looking after Bandipora, Lolab and Sopore area of North Kashmir. The other two have been identified as a local militant Khitab of Kulgam district of South Kashmir and Pakistan national Yehya Khan of Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit. Three Army personnel also sustained injuries during the operations. Police said that two AK 47 rifles, 4 AK-47 magazines, one pistol, one magazines and one grenade have been recovered from the Mundji encounter site. Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, allegedly involved in an attack on a hotel in Srinagar, and a Policeman were killed in a fierce encounter between Security Forces (SFs) and militants in Dodhipora village of Kulgam District on December 24, reports Daily Excelsior. The slain militants were identified as Mudasir Sheikh alias Mavia, a self-styled ‘district commander’, and his Pakistani associate Tamim. “Both the militants were involved in an attack on a prominent hotel on the outskirts of Srinagar in October 2011,” the spokesman said.
