An Army Captain and three soldiers were killed and four persons including two Army and Border Security Force (BSF) jawans (troopers) and two teenage civilians were injured in heavy ceasefire violations by Pakistan army almost across all major Sectors on the Line of Control (LoC) in the twin border Districts of Poonch and Rajouri on February 4 in which Pakistani troops also used missiles, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said that Pakistan army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatic, mortars and missiles on the LoC in Bhimber Gali sector of Rajouri District. In the firing and shelling, four Army soldiers including a Captain were martyred and another jawan was injured in Tarkundi area in BG sector of Poonch District. The Indian side retaliated effectively, leading to heavy exchanges that continued till late tonight (February 4). The killed soldiers were identified as Captian Kapil Kundu (23), Rifleman Ramavatar (28), Rifleman Subham Singh (23), and Havaldar Roshan Lal (43).Pakistan activated almost all major Sectors on the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch Districts on February4 including Sunderbani, Nowshera, Manjakote, Poonch, Mendhar and Balakote by resorting to heavy mortar shelling and firing in some of the forward areas targeting Army posts and civilian areas, adds Daily Excelsior. The Indian side retaliated at all places. Two teenagers, Shahnaz Bano (15) and Yasin (14), were injured when a mortar shell exploded close to their house in Shahpur sub sector of Poonch District in the afternoon. They were evacuated from the site of firing and shifted to hospital, where they were responding to the treatment. A BSF Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was injured in Sunderbani sector in Rajouri District. Sources said Pakistan side was also reported to have suffered heavy losses in retaliatory shelling by the Indian troops at all the places.Since January 18, death toll in ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the LoC and International Border (IB) has gone up to 18 as 14 persons including eight civilians and six security personnel were killed during past fortnight. However, there has been no ceasefire violation on the IB in Jammu, Samba and Kathua Districts since January 22. Firing and shelling by Pakistan on the LoC has become a regular feature. There was panic among the border dwellers along LoC as Pakistan continued to target civilian areas in both Rajouri and Poonch districts. During the past several days, people were mostly confining themselves to their houses. Schools also remained closed for past several days in shelling hit areas on the LoC.

Two Police personnel were killed in a daring attack by Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives to free a Pakistani terrorist from Police custody when he was taken to SMHS hospital in Srinagar on February 6, reports Daily Excelsior. Naveed Jat alias Abu Hanzullah (22) resident of Sahiwala in Multan Punjab in Pakistan who was arrested on June 21, 2014 from Kulgam District of South Kashmir, fled from Police custody when he was taken to SMHS hospital in Srinagar in the morning from Central Jail Srinagar for medical checkup. Naveed along with five other jail inmates were taken to hospital for treatment in the morning. Sources said that two militants handed him a pistol inside the hospital and in no time, he fired at the Police guarding him, who were injured critically. The two militants and LeT ‘commander’ took the advantage of panic that gripped the hospital and fled away. The two Police Personnel, identified as Head-Constable Mushtaq Ahmad and Constable Babar Ahmad Khan who were being treated in the SMHS hospital, later succumbed to injuries. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Ismail Parray said that Naveed was brought from Central Jail Srinagar for medical checkup. He had a scuffle with escorting Police party and suddenly two persons appeared and opened fire. In the incident, two Policemen suffered injuries, who later succumbed. Police and Special Operations Group (SoG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police immediately laid a cordon and conducted searches in the area but the LeT commander and his associates had already fled. An alert was sounded in Srinagar district to intensify the searches to trace out the fleeing inmate and his associates. However, no traces of the LeT commander and his associates were found. Naveed was ‘district commander’ of LeT for Shopian district and close associate of LeT ‘chief’ Abu Qasim, killed in 2015. Naveed was operating in South Kashmir since July 2012 and before this he was operating in Lolab in Kupwara District, for one year. He was involved in the killing of an ASI (Assistant Sub Inspector) in Pulwama in 2013 and a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) man in Shopian besides snatching of two weapons from them, killing of two Policemen near the District Court complex, Pulwama in 2014. A Police officer, who interrogated him at the time of his arrest, said that Naveed is mentally tough and was most dreaded militant when he was operating in South Kashmir. He said that the LeT was planning to get him out of Jail for last few months with an aim to rejuvenate the outfit. The officer said that if not tackled immediately, Naveed has the potential to re-organize the LeT which has been shattered due to successful operations.

Indian Army destroyed a Pakistani post on the Line of Control (LoC) in Balnoi sub sector of Poonch District while Indo-Pak troops traded heavy shelling in Uri sector of Baramulla District forcing the administration to shift dozens of families from near the LoC on February 22, reports Daily Excelsior. Sources said that Indian Army destroyed a Pakistani post opposite Balnoi sub sector in Poonch District after observing movement of suspected militants, who had been camping there with a view to infiltrate into the Indian territory. “The post was razed to ground,’’ sources said, adding that all Pakistani troopers inside the post were believed dead. However, so far, there was no official confirmation of Pakistani casualties. Normally a Pakistani post has three to four soldiers, they said.According to sources, the Indian action against Pakistani troops was necessitated as Pakistani troops could have aided infiltration attempt by the militants. Army has been maintaining high alert all along the LoC in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri following presence of militants across the LoC and reports that they could attempt infiltration under the cover of ceasefire violations.Meanwhile, Army and Pakistani troops traded heavy shelling in Uri sector of Baramulla District on February 22 forcing the administration to shift dozens of families from near the LoC. A senior official said that Pakistani troops suffered heavy damage in the sector as Army fired rockets and mortars in response to Pakistani ceasefire violation. He, however, said that exact estimated loss is not known. Pakistani troops targeted Army posts at Hatlanga, Churanda and Tika Post along the LoC in Uri sector of Baramulla district early on February 22. “Pakistan troops started firing at around 8:00 am which was responded strongly by the soldiers manning the LoC in the sector”, the official said. The firing from both the sides continued throughout the day during which both the sides used rockets and mortars besides firing from heavy machine guns. The terror stricken residents in the shelling hit areas remained indoors to avoid casualties. Two houses suffered minor damage in the shelling at Churanda near the LoC. The intensity of the cross-border shelling was such that villagers living near the LoC were shifted to safety by the Police and local administration. An official said that around 25 families living in Tillawari, Silikote and Balkote comprising of 120 people were shifted from their areas. He said that around 80 people have been accommodated in Higher Secondary School Uri and over 35 people have shifted to their relatives places. In the meantime, Inspector General (IG) of Border Security Force (BSF), Sonali Mishra, on February 22 said that troops are on high alert after inputs that 175 militants are waiting for infiltration in Pakistani Occupied Kashmir (PoK), adds Daily Excelsior. “We have a high level of alertness here but we have raised the alertness for infiltration, Border Action Team (BAT) action, firing, and sniping. We are always ready as nearly 175 militants are ready on the launching pads for infiltration. “, she said. Mishra said that all the agencies are alert and ready to counter any attack. She said that Pakistan always tries to disrupt the peace and prosperity of India and use different tactics including ceasefire violations, sniping and BAT action. “In order to disrupt the peace in the hinterland, they carry infiltration”, she said. “Ceasefire violation has always happened and we cannot deny the fact that Pakistan uses it as a strategy to carry infiltration”, the BSF IG said.

Pakistani troops on February 23 resumed heavy mortar shelling and firing in parts of Nowshera and Manjakote sectors in Rajouri district in which an Army soldier was injured and two houses were damaged. Sources said that there were reports that at least two to three members of Pakistan’s BAT were killed in last night’s (February 22) action by the Indian Army across Balnoi sub sector of Mendhar tehsil in Poonch district in which two posts and a bunker of Pakistani troops were razed to ground. The video available with the Daily Excelsior showed Pakistani posts and bunkers going in flames after being hit by anti-tank guided missiles, which were being used by the Indian troops to neutralize the BAT members and other infiltrators, who have been camping either inside or close to Pakistani posts waiting opportunity for infiltration into the Indian territory. “The BAT members had reportedly taken shelter in the Pakistani posts and were believed to be dead,’’ sources said, adding some Pakistani troops might have suffered fatal or non-fatal casualties in the “pre-emptive and aggressive action’’ that was taken to thwart BAT action and infiltration attempt by the militants along LoC.

Four militants, a civilian and a Police man were killed in an encounter in Srigufwara area of Anantnag District on June 22, reports Daily Excelsior. Over three dozen persons were also injured in the clashes that broke out during the operation. When Security Forces (SFs) cordoned off Nowshera in Khiram in Srigufwara area of Anantnag District early on June 22, militants opened fire on the troops during the operation leading to an encounter. Sources said that in the initial firing, one house owner, Mohammad Yousuf Rather (50) was killed and his wife Hafeeza suffered bullet injuries. One Special Police Officer (SPO), Ashiq Hussain was also killed in the encounter and another Army man was critically injured in the initial firing by militants. The firing lasted for several hours and the security forces blasted off the residential house killing all the four militants.A Police spokesman in a statement said that, “In the encounter, all the four militants were killed who have been identified as Dawood Ahmad Sofi, Majid Manzoor Dar, Aadil Rehman Bhat and Mohammad Ashraf Itoo”. Police also said that Dawood Ahmad Sofi (33), son of Mohammad Subhan Sofi, of Zainakoot HMT Srinagar, was involved in a number of stone pelting cases in the area prior to joining the militant outfit. “He was involved in a militant attack which resulted in the death of ASI Ghulam Mohammad and HC Naseer Ahmad at Bagh-Ali-Mardan Khan in Zadibal and also in the killing of the policeman and snatching his rifle at Tengpora Batamaloo besides other militant attacks”, the spokesman said. “Majid Manzoor Dar of Talangam, Pulwama also joined the militant outfit and remained active along with Aadil Rehman Bhat of Shettipora, Bijbehara and Mohammad Ashraf Itoo of Hatigam Srigufwara, Anantnag”, the spokesman added. “Initially, Dawood was known to be affiliated with Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) outfit. The outfit was active on social media and mostly attacked the policemen on duty at different places. The social media profiling and inputs indicate that they were inspired by ISIS [Islamic State] module”, the spokesman said. “Incriminating material and a huge quantity of ammunition were also seized from the site of the encounter”, the spokesman said.Soon after the encounter broke out hundreds of people particularly youth marched towards the encounter site, triggering massive clashes as they pelted rocks on the SFs, adds Daily Excelsior. Police and paramilitary forces fired tear smoke shells, pellets and bullets to quell the protests. At least three dozen persons were injured. One of the injured, Ubaid Ahmad, who has bullet injury in his neck is in critical condition.Clashes also erupted in HMT Zainakote in Srinagar (Srinagar District) and Pulwama (Pulwama District). Police used force to quell the protesters. The Hindu adds that the four militants who were killed in an encounter with SFs in Anantnag on June 22 were inspired only by the ideology of the Islamic State (IS), similar to the case of such persons arrested over the years in Kerala, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh and unlike a Kashmiri terrorist group, a senior Jammu and Kashmir Police officer said. Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir), S.P. Pani said they don’t have the infrastructure and logistical support that most Kashmiri terror groups have. The eight or nine men in the ‘gang’ are all former members of the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM), a Pakistan-backed terrorist group that is part of the United Jihad Council (UJC).Mostly well-educated and belonging to urban settlements, the ‘gang’ members had carried out grenade attacks on check posts and snatched weapons from SFs in the past, the Police said. The TuM is headed by Jamil-ur-Rehman of Lajora in Pulwama District. S.P. Pani, said those killed on June 22 were part of a ‘terrorist gang’ and had been on the Police radar for almost a year. “This terrorist gang is as good as those in Hyderabad or Kerala. It is not a terrorist group as the infrastructure and hierarchy, the kind of logistical support such groups provide to their members are not there,” S. P. Pani said. Another Police official insisted there was no physical infrastructure of the IS in the Valley, and initially, the gang used the logistics provided by the TuM.
