Bashir Ahmad Wani, a Sarpanch (head of Gram Panchayat, village level local self government institution) of village Kalantra, was shot dead by unidentified militants in the evening of February 24 at his residence in Payeen locality of Kreeri area in Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. Wani was also affiliated to the ruling National Conference (NC) party. Police sources said that he was provided with security. Constable Sajjad Ahmad was attached with Wani while Constable Abdul Majid was attached with his father. However, the Constable was not with Bashir Ahmad Wani when he was attacked.

Foiling an infiltration bid, Security Forces (SF) shot dead one militant when he tried to infiltrate into the Indian side of the border in Pokhra area of Nowshera Sector (Rajouri District) on March 24, reports Daily Excelsior. PKR 2050, an I-card and some paper slips containing telephone numbers, were recovered from the slain militant whose identity has been established as Mohammad Maqsood (33), son of Mohammad Abbas, resident of village Bandala of Bhimber District in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Suspected militants opened fire on a Police party injuring one civilian, identified as Abdul Rashid Dar, and one Security Force (SF) trooper, identified as Kishor Kumar of 16th Battalion of Indian Reserve Police (IRP), at a busy Sunday Market in Sopore town (Baramulla District) on March 24, reports Daily Excelsior. Dar later succumbed to his injuries. Militants also snatched the service rifle (AK-47) of injured cop before fleeing from the site. Kashmir Times added that there was a huge rush at the Sunday Market as it opened for the first time since the execution of 2001 Parliament Attack Case convict, Mohammad Afzal Guru on February 9, 2013. Superintendent of Police, Sopore, Imtiyaz Hussain Mir said that the Police have recovered three cartridges used in Shaheen Pistol from the spot. In an operation based on specific inputs, Security Forces (SF) apprehended Qari Naved alias Fahad Ullah, the ‘divisional commander’ of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit on April 17 from Sopore town (Baramulla District), while one of his aide was shot dead in the same District on April 18 during an operation launched on information provided by him, reports Daily Excelsior. Two militants were hiding in an orchard at village Wagub in Sopore area of the District, who upon seeing the SF fired upon the advancing parties and in the retaliatory fire one militant, identified as Shabir Ahmad Sheikh alias Tameem alias Sufiyan, was killed. However, the second militant, Hilal Molvi alias Khalid managed to escape from the area by taking advantage of people working in the orchards.Inspector General of Police (IGP) A G Mir informed, “He (Fahad Ullah) was functioning as divisional commander of LeT outfit in North Kashmir and was coordinator between Pakistan based LeT commander Hanzullah on one side and Qari Yasir of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Divisional commander LeT for South Kashmir, Qasim on the other side.”2 AK rifles, 5 AK magazines, 2 Pistols, 5 grenades, 150 AK and pistol rounds in total were recovered from the possession of the arrested and the dead militant.

At least two militants suspected to be shot dead by the Security Forces (SF) in an operation at Gatyali Behak locality in Rajwar forest area of Handwara (Kupwara District) on May 2, reports Daily Excelsior. Sources said, “SF fired grenades inside the hideout to eliminate the militants but it was not clear whether the militants are dead or alive. After the grenades were fired there was no response from them to the security SF and it is believed they are dead.” The dead militants are believed to be of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) whose task was to receive the infiltrated militants as the snow has started melting in the sector and militants are ready on launching pads for infiltration.

Militants on June 26 shot dead a local politician, Kifayat Hussain Mir, in Sopore town of Baramulla District, Police said, according to Daily Excelsior. Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, identified as Pradeep Gana and Mahesh Kumar, were shot dead by militants on Srinagar-Jammu highway near Awantipora town in the Pulwama District on November 7, reports Daily Excelsior. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, South Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar, said that the two CRPF men were on Road Opening Party (ROP) duty near Pandav Park in Awantipora on the National Highway. Kumar said that one militant used the boat to cross river Jhelum and struck on the highway. He said that after crossing the river, the militant travelled around 100 metres and fired indiscriminately upon the two CRPF men. Kumar said Police suspected hailed that the militant who carried out the attack was Irshad Gania of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) who hailed from Padgampora village in Pulwama District. He said that Security Forces (SFs) have cordoned off a village as they got information that he has fled to that village after carrying out the attack.A person identifying himself as Sami-ul-Haq of Shuda-e-Brigade claimed responsibility for the attack. “Our cadres carried out the attack in Awantipora and killed the two CRPF personnel”, he told a local agency.
