Meanwhile, shutdown in south Kashmir’s Pulwama town in Pulwama District and its adjoining areas continued for the sixth day on January 4, as the youth of the area are adamant on installing the insignia of local and foreign militants killed in gunfights with SFs. All the shops and commercial establishments were closed while the public transport was also off the roads. There was, however, no incident of stonepelting and the situation remained peaceful throughout the day, a Police official said. To prevent the violence the Police arrested more than a dozen youths from different parts of Pulwama over the charges of stonepelting and made it clear that the installation of insignia of militants won’t be allowed

At least six persons including two Policemen were injured during clashes in the outskirts of Srinagar in Pantha Chowk area on January 12, as Police fired scores of tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters who had blocked the SrinagarJammu National Highway over the killing of top LashkareToiba (LeT) ‘commander’ Sajjad Ahmad Bhat, who was gunned down on January 11 in Zakura area of Srinagar, reports Daily Excelsior. The mourners attempted to hold the funeral along SrinagarJammu National Highway but a large contingent of Police intercepted the procession holding body of the militant commander and resorted to heavy teargas shelling. Police fired tear gas on youth who retaliated by pelting stones, triggering clashes. A Police official said two persons received injuries in the clashes while at least 4 protesters were also injured. A complete shutdown was observed in Pantha Chowk, Pampore, Zewan and adjoining areas against the Sajjad’s killing.

Life in most parts of Kashmir returned to normal after remaining paralysed for five days due to strikes, protests and restrictions but the curfew like restrictions continued in Handwara and Kupwara towns where five persons have been killed since last week, reports Daily Excelsior on April 18. A Police spokesman said that the situation remained normal and peaceful across the Kashmir valley on April 17. “There were no reports of stone pelting from any part of the Valley. Markets were open, transport and rail services operated normally at most of the places”, he added. There were no restrictions in Srinagar on April 17 and the day has passed off peacefully with no untoward incident reported from anywhere in the Valley. However, strict curbs on the movement of people remained in force in some areas in North Kashmir, including Kupwara and Handwara towns, for the fifth day to maintain law and order. The restrictions may be eased tomorrow in Kupwara and Handwara towns as the Sunday passed off peacefully in North Kashmir where five persons were killed in alleged security forces firing.

However, private vehicles plied normally. The call for shutdown was given jointly by both the factions of All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). Authorities imposed curfew in two Southern Districts and restrictions in parts of Anantnag and Srinagar as shutdown and curfew paralysed life for 24th consecutive day on August 1, reports Daily Excelsior. Curfew remained in place in two Districts including Kulgam, Pulwama and Imam Sahib, Shopian while restrictions were imposed in Anantnag town and in parts of Srinagar to thwart any protests against the civilian killings in Kashmir. A large contingent of Police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed in curfew and restriction bound areas to thwart protests. Police and CRPF blocked the roads by erecting concertina and barbed wires. Reports reaching here from Srinagar, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian, Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora Districts suggested that clashes took place between Security Forces (SFs) and protesters at several places in which at least 40 people including a CRPF personnel were injured. Meanwhile, there were protests in Rajouri District while Bhaderwah town of Doda District observed partial shutdown over Kashmir unrest, reports Daily Excelsior on August 4. ”A group of youths representing a political organization this morning assembled outside Idgah and staged protest over prevailing Kashmir situation,” reports said. The protestors raised slogans and later dispersed. No violence was reported. In addition, members of a particular community observed shutdown to express solidarity with protesters in Kashmir. ”There was no violence or any untoward incident was reported from across the Bhaderwah town during the shutdown,” said a Police officer. He added that the bandh(general shutdown) was completely peaceful while the protestors expressed resentment over civilian killings by the SFs in the Kashmir valley.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Zone, Danesh Rana said, the administration was closely watching the situation and has taken adequate measures to maintain peace and law & order in entire Jammu region. He also said, the persons involved in shouting of objectionable slogans have been identified and would be arrested soon. “The law will take its own course against those fomenting trouble,’’ he added. The IGP said mobile internet services, which were suspended early on August 5, in entire Jammu region, were restored in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi Districts tonight but they remained suspended in Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri and Poonch Districts. “A decision on restoration of internet in five districts will be taken tomorrow,’’ Rana said.

Two Sumo vehicles were set ablaze by a group of unidentified masked men in Parimpora area of Srinagar on October 17, reports Daily Excelsior. At Barthana near Parimpora, two Sumo taxis were set ablaze by masked youth for defying shutdown call of separatists this morning (October 17). The vehicles were completely gutted even as fire tenders arrived at spot to douse the flames. Police also rushed to the spot and started manhunt. These two vehicles were coming from Kupwara and belonged to Jehangir Ahmad Dar of Cherkote Lolab and Muhammad Yusuf Khataba of Kalaroos. Police launched a crackdown in Parimpora and Qamarwari areas to nab the accused and curfew-like restrictions were also imposed to prevent violence.

The fresh protests were issued after a meeting of stakeholders held on November 8 in which traders, transporters and businessmen had sought relief from continued strikes. In the meantime, shutdown was observed across Kashmir for 124th day during which situation largely remained peaceful. An unnamed police spokesman said: “Situation across the Valley remained normal till filing of this report. During the day people were seen busy in their daily activities of life with vehicular traffic plying normally on roads. Shops and other business establish were open.”Also, Government on November 9 informed the State High Court that no education institute in Kashmir is occupied by the SFs. The information has been given to the Court during hearing of a public interest litigation filed by Advocate Shah Faisal seeking direction on security agencies as well as State to get all security forces vacated from all the educational institutions of the Valley.

Majority of shops, business establishments and fuel stations were closed in the valley. Authorities had deployed contingents of Security Forces (SFs) in downtown areas and also in sensitive areas of civil line to maintain law and order. Although no major incident of violence was reported from any part of the Valley but stone-pelting clashes between youth and SFs erupted at HMT on Srinagar city outskirts and in Muslim Peer locality of Sopore in Baramulla District, a police official said.
