Over 50 persons were killed on this day of 1990 when security forces opened fire at Gaw Kadal on a procession. To mark the anniversary, the separatists had called for a shutdown and protests. In view of the separatists call, a complete shutdown was observed in Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Gaw Kadal, Maisuma, Amira Kadal, Jehangir Chowk, Basant Bagh and Habba Kadal markets.

Shops and commercial establishments remained closed in Srinagar and Public transport was mostly off the roads. However, some vehicles were plying. Authorities made heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces across Srinagar to prevent any violence. However, there was no restriction on movement of people. Restrictions were imposed in Kulgam District and Shopian town where two civilians were killed on February 12. However, the movement of people was allowed on the Srinagar-Jammu highway passing through south Kashmir.

Police and paramilitary forces heavily deployed in Kulgam District foiled separatists’ March in the District on February 15, reports Daily Excelsior. Separatist leaders had called for protest March to Kulgam against the civilian killings during an encounter at Frisal in the District on February 12. Four militants, two civilians and two Army men were killed in the encounter. All entry routes towards Kulgam were sealed off and curfew like restrictions were imposed in the District. The situation remained peaceful and under control, and no protest March or clashes were reported from anywhere in the town. There were clashes in Pulwama as protesters pelted stones on Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who, in retaliation, fired tear smoke to disperse them. And in Srinagar city, there was a complete shutdown and most of shops and business establishments also remained closed. The areas like Old City and Maisuma witnessed shutdown.

Security Forces (SFs) arrested 12 persons on stone pelting charges during which 15 persons were injured in Pulwama town in Pulwama District, reports Daily Excelsior on February 26. A shutdown was observed in Pulwama town amid stonethrowing clashes against arrest of a shopkeeper on February 25. A Police official said the arrested shopkeeper, Bilal Ahmad Mir, is a stonepelter and was held on charges of stonethrowing in the town. Since morning hours, protesters came out of their houses and pelted stones on SFs in the town. The clashes continued throughout the day and security men lobbed dozens of teargas shells to disperse the rockhurlers. The protesters were seeking release of the arrested shopkeeper. Eight SF personnel were among 15 persons who were injured in these clashes. Police later detained 12 persons on charges of stone pelting during the clashes in Pulwama.

Asking people to observe a general strike, the chairmen of the two factions of the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Syed Ali Shah Geelani of the Geelani faction (APHC-G) and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq of the Mirwaiz faction (APHC-M), and JKLF (Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front) chief Mohammad Yasin Malik, in a joint statement on March 30, said “all rhetoric about development or construction of tunnels and roads are futile and will not succeed in luring us”. Kashmir witnessed a shutdown on September 25 over the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) move to summon Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) president Yasin Khan and Kashmir University scholar Aala Fazil to New Delhi for questioning in an ‘illegal funding case’, reports The Hindu. Several supporters of Yasin Khan held a silent sit-in in Lal Chowk in Srinagar against his summoning. The NIA had asked Yasin Khan to present himself before the NIA on September 25. “We would continue our peaceful protest until Yasin sahab leaves the NIA headquarter,” said a protesting trader. Earlier SATP reported that two LeT militants were killed by Security Forces (SFs) in an encounter in Pulwama District on October 14. According to sources, SFs cordoned off Litter village in after inputs about the presence of militants in the village. The militants were hiding in the house of former militant Pintu Malik and when the SFs encircled the house, the holed up militants opened fire on the SFs resulting in an encounter lasted for over an hour in which two militants were killed.Onecivilian, identified as Gulzar Ahmad Mir was also killed and four others were injured as clashes broke out between protesters and SFds in Litter area of Pulwama District after killing of two LeT militants. SFs used teargas, pellets and fired some gun shots in which one civilian was killed and four others were injured. The slain was hit by a bullet and succumbed in hospital. However, a Police spokesman said that the civilian was hit during cross firing.Large number of people attended the funeral of both the militants in their respective villages. Major parts of Pulwama and Shopian Districts observed shutdown. The authorities also downgraded mobile Internet services to 2G in both the Districts. Police said that the day passed off peacefully.
