Fresh clashes also broke out in parts of Srinagar and Baramulla leaving 13 people injured. In Srinagar, agitators staged protest demonstrations in Maisuma area, Zaldager, Galwanpora, the airport road, Nund Resh Colony, Boatman colony in Bemina, Batmaloo and HMT Zainakote. Five persons were injured in the clashes. In Baramulla town where a ‘protester’ was killed on June 28, people staged demonstrations in the town, Delina and Khanpora and clashed with SFs resulting in injuries to five persons. Local cable networks have been barred from carrying any current affairs programmes in Baramulla. In view of the violence, mobile services in North Kashmir and SMS service in the entire valley were blocked on the instructions of the State Government. The mobile services in North Kashmir were later restored after remaining suspended for a day and a half while SMS service throughout the valley is still blocked. Director General, Mobile, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), A.K. Mittal told local news agency PBI, “After receiving a communication from the Police, the service has been barred in the entire Valley from midnight today [midnight on Tuesday night].”

Three more ‘protesters’ were killed on June 29 when the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) allegedly opened fire during clashes with protestors in Anantnag as violence spread to south Kashmir, reports Times of India. Daily Excelsior added that 40 persons including 11 Policemen and a CRPF trooper were injured in the day long clashes across the Valley. With separatists giving fresh calls for strike, life remained crippled across Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, for the fifth consecutive day. Meanwhile, with these three deaths, eight ‘protesters’ have lost their lives in the last five days in incidents of shootings involving Security Forces (SFs) escalating the tense situation in the valley. In all, 11 ‘protesters’ have died in the last three weeks during clashes between ‘protestors’ and SFs, reports Times of India. Police identified the killed as Ishfaq Ahmed Khanday (15), Imtiyaz Ahmad Itoo (17) and Shujatul Islam (19). The victims were part of a mob hurling stones at CRPF personnel in Anchidoora in Anantnag town, Police said. As the news of death of two teenagers spread, more people poured on the roads and set ablaze three vehicles of CRPF at Khannabal-Pahalgam road in the town, official sources said. Daily Excelsior added quoting an unnamed Police spokesman that stone pelting was reported from K. P Chowk, Dangerpora, Lazibal, Mattan Chowk and several other places of Anantnag District. ‘Protesters’ tried to set ablaze a religious place at Janglat Mandi in Anantnag and snatched the service weapons of the deputed Police guards, the spokesman said. Earlier in the day, 16-year-old boy Irshad Ahmad Bhat received a bullet injury in his left leg when Police opened fire on a mob at Mattan Bus Stand in the town, Times of India adds. Besides Bhat, 20 other persons including 10 Policemen were injured in day-long clashes between stone pelting mob and law enforcing agencies in the town.

Taking advantage of the new violence in Kashmir, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘chief’ Syed Salahuddin on July 6 addressed a rally in Islamabad to ‘‘denounce human rights violations in Kashmir’’, reports Times of India. Salahuddin has found himself increasingly isolated as the militant violence in the Valley waned to an all-time low since 1989. The HM, which was once Jammu and Kashmir’s largest indigenous group, has fragmented and July 6’s rally is seen as his desperate attempt to stage a comeback. Salahuddin assailed Islamabad for trying to please New Delhi and extending a warm welcome to Home Minister P Chidambaram last month. ‘‘Pakistan’s constant efforts to befriend India are like rubbing salt into the wounds of Kashmiris,’’ he said. Salahuddin claimed Kashmiris consider Pakistan as their lawful representative to raise the Kashmir issue at national and international level.

Clashes erupted in some parts of Kashmir Valley as over 100 activists belonging to several NGOs on November 7 staged a peace rally against frequent strikes and stone-pelting incidents, reported Daily Excelsior. The activists of Jammu and Kashmir NGO Forum, a conglomerate of several NGOs, were demonstrating against loss of INR 270 billion, which has affected all sections of the society as a result of four months continuous strikes. Jammu and Kashmir has been removed from the United Nations (UN) list of unresolved disputes, reports The Hindu. The omission of Jammu and Kashmir from the list of disputes under the observation of the Security Council was noticed by Pakistan, whose envoy has filed a protest. “The Jammu and Kashmir dispute was not mentioned in the context of unresolved long-running situations,” Pakistan's acting envoy to the UN Amjad Hussain B. Sial said. “We understand this was an inadvertent omission, as Jammu and Kashmir is one of the oldest disputes on the agenda of the Security Council,” he claimed, speaking at the General Assembly session, which was discussing the functioning and reform of the Security Council. It was organised by the United Kingdom, which holds the presidency of the Security Council this month.
