On February 9, around 40 persons, including 23 policemen, were injured in clashes that broke out between protesters and Police in several parts of Kashmir Valley after authorities imposed indefinite curfew in Srinagar City and other major towns of the Valley. Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Prasad said February 9 protests were basically confined to North Kashmir, including Baramulla, Sopore and Pattan in Baramulla District and Handwara in Kupwara District. The Central Kashmir was normal, he added. Prasad said few incidents of protests were reported from Srinagar but they were tackled. In South Kashmir, there was negligible impact of protests, he added. The state police chief said protests were also reported from parts of Jammu region but they passed off peacefully. In the meantime, curfew continued for second consecutive day in Srinagar and other major towns of Kashmir valley to prevent protests against Guru's hanging.

On February 10, one youth died while six were injured during protests against the hanging of Parliament Case attack convict Mohammed Afzal Guru on February 9, reports Daily Excelsior. Residents of Ganderbal area (Ganderbal District) claimed one Tariq Ahmad Bhat and two others jumped into the river when they were chased by Security Forces. One youth managed to swim ashore, residents said adding another was saved by some persons. An unnamed Police spokesman denied the allegation saying the youth drowned after a boat capsized on the river. The death of youth led to fresh protests in the area. The police spokesman said that six persons were injured in Watergam area of Baramulla District while "tackling" law and order situation.

Malik and some of his supporters observed a 24-hour fast in protest of Guru's hanging, according to The Times of India. On Malik's meeting with Saeed, Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said that he would look into this matter after getting details from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. On queries as to whether any action will be taken against Malik for sharing dais with Saeed, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said, "I will look into the case."

One protester, identified as Tahir Latief Sofi, was killed and two others were injured in Baramulla town (Baramulla District) on March 5 in alleged Security Forces’ (SF) firing on violent protesters agitating against the suicide by a Kashmiri Student in Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) on March 2, reports Daily Excelsior. However, the Army has denied involvement in the killing. Srinagar based Defence spokesperson said that Army fired in air when they were trapped by protetsers in the township and claimed that someone else shot dead Tahir Sofi with a view to trigger large scale violence. Army has ordered internal investigations into the firing incident. Protests were reported from other parts of the State too, in which over a dozen of persons, including Police personnel, were injured.

A Police spokesman said, “Miscreants pelted stones in Batamaloo and Zakoora in Srinagar (District), Khanpora, Cement bridge and Palhalan in Baramulla (District), Narbal crossing in Budgam (District), Papchan in Bandipora (District), Cherkoot Lolab in Kupwara (District). Reports said that soon after the Friday prayers youth pelted stones on Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Saraf Kadal area of Srinagar leading to the clashes that left three persons injured.‘Protesters’ also pelted stones on Police and CRPF at several places in Baramulla District. Six persons were injured in the clashes that followed.Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reiterated his wish for phase-wise revocation of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). Asked to list two most important wishes he would like to be fulfilled, he replied, “If I had to select two points, it would be one, the phase-wise revocation of the AFSPA and two, the return of NHPC [National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)] power projects to the State as recommended by the Rangarajan committee.” His Government has been pitching for phase-wise removal of AFSPA from the State starting from municipal limits of Srinagar and Jammu cities.

Communal clashes amid curfew broke out again in Kishtwar District on August 12 leaving at least five persons, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and two other Police personnel, injured, reports The Times of India. Sources said fresh violence broke out in three localities - Adyal, Muttah and Kulid of the Kishtwar District as protesters demanded the release of a person detained by the Police. On August 9, soon after Eid prayers, some people raised anti-national slogans in Kishtwar Town. It led to clashes between two communities. The violence spread to other parts of Jammu Division. So far, three people have been killed and 60 others have sustained injuries in the violence. As per officials a total of 68 shops, seven hotels and 35 vehicles have been damaged during the clashes.
