According to media reports, a 13-year old girl, who was lured by left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) in May 2001, escaped and surrendered before Koyyur police in Nizamabad district on April 7. Reports said that Naxalites had taken away the girl when she was working in the fields in Vallemkunta village under the Koyyur police station limits, promising ‘freedom’ from slavery. Police sources said that the girl was forced to join the Naxalite-fold as Local Guerrilla Squad member and later she was deputed in the Jana Natya Mandali, cultural wing of the Naxalites, where she sang ‘revolutionary’ songs in the villages. She reportedly told the police that after escaping from some encounters she was terrorised and decided to surrender.

According to media reports, a farmer couple in Katukapalli village, Karimnagar district, have sent an e-mail to Amnesty International (AI) seeking help in the restoration of their 14-year-old daughter abducted by left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG). The couple alleged that the Naxalites were ‘forcibly recruiting’ youngsters like their daughter Padma into the PWG, while the latter contended that the girl ‘‘joined the movement of her own accord’’, said reports. It further added that hundreds of parents in the region were undergoing similar agony after their children were forcibly taken away by the PWG.

In an incident, bowing to pressure from local residents, the PWG, on August 5, set free a teenaged girl they had forcibly recruited a couple of months ago. The parents of 14-year old Pushpa went on a hunger strike for four days last week at Sarangapur, Karimnagar district, demanding their daughter’s freedom. The parents alleged that the PWG had abducted and recruited their daughter. The parents had given up the hunger strike on being persuaded by several hundred people from villages in Sarangapur mandal (administrative unit). These hundreds of people, in turn, served an ultimatum on the PWG threatening a serious agitation if the Naxals did not set the girl free, and had also set a deadline. The girl was ultimately set free in the Konapur forests three days after the deadline elapsed.

Andhra Pradesh police have lunched a massive manhunt in the State to locate the four police personnel abducted by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) from the Anakapalli police station, Vishakhapatnam district, on August 23. Before abducting the police personnel, the Naxals also blasted in Anakapalli and Chodavaram police stations and the adjoining treasury office at the second place and decamped with at least 15 rifles from the police station and cash from the treasury. While State police chief P Ramulu held a review meeting to assess the latest situation on August 25, senior police and intelligence officials are camping in Visakhapatnam to monitor the situation in north Coastal Andhra. Media reports said, following instructions from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Ramulu has ordered the formation of 20 special teams to conduct combing operations in the suspected areas. The police have also reportedly sought assistance from the bordering States––Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh––to carry out similar combing operations in border areas. The police are also consulting civil rights groups to seek their involvement in securing the release of the abducted police personnel. Official sources indicated, with peace talks between the State government and the PWG failing, cadres of the PWG’s Andhra-Orissa Special Border Zone stepped up action against police and suspected police informers. This was to establish ‘liberated and red zones’, as was dome in the adjoining Dandkaranya region, official sources added. With police in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts concentrating their anti-Naxalite drive in agency areas, the Naxalites reportedly changed their strategy to strike terror in the plains for the first time, resulting in the August 23-incident.
