A printing press owner was arrested and printing machines and materials used for printing handbills, wall posters and literature for the proscribed People’s War Group (PWG) were seized by police in Nizamabad on January 21. Police sources indicated that the arrested person had joined a printing press in 1984 and came into contact with the PWG North Telangana ‘special zone committee’ member Azad in 1997. He claimed that Azad gave him Rs 7 lakh in May 2001 for the purpose of printing handbills, wall posters and literature for the PWG.

A reporter of a vernacular daily was arrested for aiding Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG), according to Nizamabad police sources on January 24. The Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of Nizamabad said that Kola Baleshwer Rao of Medak district had been assisting the PWG for the last eight years. According to the OSD, the arrested journalist was also involved in printing literature and pamphlets of PWG at Gandhinagar in Hyderabad. As reported earlier, the printing press was raided and its owner arrested in Hyderabad recently.

According to a delayed report, police arrested an important woman leader of left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) from Godavarikahani, Karimnagar district on March 2. Police sources said that the Naxalite, Kavitha alias Kursiki Bhanu is the ‘commander’ of the Mangi dalam of the PWG in Adilabad district and was involved in several acts of violence, including murder. Andhra Pradesh police arrested four persons who had allegedly been helping left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG), for the last 10 years in Nirmal town, Adilabad district, on March 30. The district police chief said the four were working as guards at the Nirmal bus depot of the State Road Transport Department. All these persons were helping the PWG to extend its activities and to make several ‘bandhs’ (general strike calls) successful, he said and added that they were connected with the murder of Ramesh Reddy, the chairman of the District Cooperative Central Bank. They were also reportedly providing shelter to PWG activists.

Police from Hyderabad City Police Commissioner's Task Force for Northern region, on May 16, arrested a pseudo Naxalite gang named ‘CPI (ML) People's Class War’ at Lalitanagar in Secunderabad. Additional Commissioner of Police A.K. Khan said at a press conference that arms and ammunition and pamphlets were recovered from them. Many of them had earlier worked for left wing extremists groups. In a related incident, officials from Commissioner's Task Force (West), nabbed on May 16 three pseudo Naxalites while extorting money from a person in the West Marredpally area of Hyderabad city. The accused persons have reportedly threatened the owner of an educational institution and demanded money.

Andhra Pradesh police arrested 33 left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the Communist Party of India—Marxist-Leninist—CPI-ML (Janasakthi), near Chilakammanagar, Khanpur Mandal on June 18. Disclosing this at a press conference at Narsampet police station, on June 19, the deputy superintendent of police said Narsampet police received information that Janashakti Naxalites were holding a meeting near Chilakammanagar. Acting on the tip-off, the police laid a trap and caught the Naxalites unawares. According to district police chief V V Srinivasa Rao, the villagers caught the Naxal leader while he was moving suspiciously and handed him over to the police. Police in Yellandu, Andhra Pradesh, arrested Md. Sultan under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) on charges of being a sympathiser of left-extremists, Naxalites of the People's War Group (PWG). The arrest followed a raid at a house from where 60 olive green uniforms meant for a military platoon were seized. Sulatan bought the cloth for the uniforms and had also got them stitched, Kahammam district police chief V V Srinivasa Rao said, on July 15. Reportedly, Sultan was involved in the bomb attack on the Yellandu police station on May 23 1988. Only lately, he had also arranged for the collection from Mutharam forest area of the blood sample of a member of the East Zonal Command Committee and subsequently for its clinical test. Nine others, mainly couriers and contacts of squads operating in Khammam district, were also arrested under various sections of the National Security Act. The seizures and arrest followed a tip off after the Mamillavai encounter.
