Three police personnel were killed in a landmine blast triggered by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG). Three Naxalites were killed in subsequent encounter that occurred between Kothur and Dachepalli villages, Guntur district, on January 5. Official sources said the police personnel were escorting three jeeps carrying officials of the State government’s Janmbhoomi (community development) programme when the Naxals triggered the blast. The officials were going to organize a gramsabha (village meeting) in Naxal-affected Kothur village as part of the Janmabhoomi programme. Soon after the landmine blast, over a dozen police personnel, who were part of the escort team, began to fire in the direction from where the Naxals triggered the landmines. During the encounter, three Naxals, including a woman, were killed. Senior police officials, including the State police chief P Ramulu, rushed to the scene and a combing operation has been launched to track down the Naxalites.

Police unearthed an arms dump of the left-wing extremist—Naxalite—People’s War Group (PWG) in Kukkamadugu forest, Kothuaguda mandal (administrative unit), Warangal district, on January 20. Based on information provided by Pandava local guerrilla squad (LGS) ‘commander’, who surrendered recently, a search was conducted and a tractor load (some 12 quintals) of gelatin sticks and eight grenades stored in an RCC dump were recovered in the deep forests. Besides, three landmines were recovered near Gunjedu village in the same district.

A left-wing extremist—Naxalite—of the Communist Party of India––Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) [Janasakthi] was killed in an encounter on the outskirts of Narsimhulapally village, Sircilla mandal (administrative unit), Karimnagar district, on February 27. Police sources said the slain Naxalite was the Sircilla and Illanthakunta mandal organiser of the Janasakthi group. The encounter took place when a police party combing the area came across some miscreants, who opened fire on the police even as the latter sought to know their identity. Some incriminating documents, a kit bag and some ammunition were recovered from the slain Naxalite.

Media reports said, two left wing extremists––Naxalites––of the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist [CPI-ML Janashakthi], were killed in an encounter at a tribal hamlet of Vattimalla village, Konaraopeta mandal (administrative unit) in Andhra Pradesh’s Karimnagar district, on March 8. Karimnagar district police chief R.S. Praveen Kumar informed that the Naxalites had attacked a team of special police parties and the local police while searching the area. While two Naxalites were killed in the encounter, their associate escaped. A Chinese-made pistol and a grenade were recovered from encounter-site.

Left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) abducted four police personnel from Peddaraveedu, in Nallamala forests, Prakasam district, on April 2. The abducted persons included Peddaraveedu sub-inspector P Anjaneyulu, assistant sub-inspector Maddela Subba Rao, constable S Brahmaiah and home guard D Baburao. According to media reports, approximately 20 armed-Naxalites entered a stationary Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus in which police personnel were seated and abducted them. The police personnel were returning to the headquarters after providing security at a local annual fair. The Naxalites also snatched a 9mm revolver and a wireless set from the assistant sub-inspector. A search operation is on to track down the Naxalites. Meanwhile, Prakasam district police chief Charu Sinha said the Naxalites have not put forward any demand so far to release the abducted police personnel. However, unconfirmed media reports said the Naxals have demanded tee release of pro-Naxal littérateur arrested recently under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), 2002.

Left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) hurled grenades at a private vehicle and injured a police personnel and a driver near Ongole, Prakasam district on April 22. The police personnel was proceeding to Veerabhadrapuram and Kolukula villages of Yerragondapalem mandal (administrative unit) to arrest tribals who conducted famine raids at the behest of the Naxalites. The slain Naxalite leader, Anupam Komaraiah alias AK was a member of North Telangana Zonal Committee (NTZC). Earlier he was District Secretary of the Dandkaranya region. According to official sources, the encounter took place when a special police party, on a tip-off, that some Naxalite leaders have assembled in the forest began combing operation.
