An ‘area commander’ of the People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Sonaram Sundi, was arrested from Badlagya village in West Singhbhum District on January 12, reports The Times of India. South Chhotanagpur Inspector General of Police (IG) MS Bhatia said Police also seized five rifles from the area commander. The anti-PLFI operation was started in Khunti, Simdega, Gumla and West Singhbhum Districts on January 8. Police said the PLFI has threatened with a day-long state wide bandh (shut down strike) if the search operation was not called off.

Three suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed during a three hour long encounter with Security Forces (SFs) at Bukar village under Chauparan Police Station area in Hazaribag District on January 12, reports The Times of India. Police have recovered the three dead bodies along with three rifles, a huge cache of explosives and Maoist literature from the spot. Police is yet to identify the dead bodies. Jharkhand Police spokesperson Anurag Gupta confirmed the incident.

Police on January 18 recovered 10,000 detonators from a Ranchi-bound passenger bus and arrested the driver, reported The Times of India. The bus was coming from Odisha and was stopped at Namkum in Ranchi District of Jharkhand. Ranchi Police said the driver, Ravi Shankar Pandey (35), is from Bihar's Sheikhpura District and worked on the Odisha-Jharkhand route. Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhat Kumar said that "The huge quantity of explosives indicates that some large network is behind its transport." Probe has already started to find who had ordered the explosives. However, the Police did not find any Maoist link.

"Satyendra Yadav was arrested at the bus stand by the personnel of town Police Station when he got down from a bus," Superintendent of Police (SP) Y.S. Ramesh said. A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) team on February 23 discovered a large amount of explosives and ammunition near Aman village situated in Jhumra of Gomia block in Bokaro District, reports The Times of India. Although Maoists seem to have deserted Jhumra, their arms and ammunitions are still being recovered from different spots across the jungles by a CRPF 26 battalion team, headed by commandant, Sanjay Kumar. The search team, while scouring the jungle, discovered a steel trunk containing explosives and weapons, after being tipped off about the Maoist hideout. "We conducted a check at the spot with metal detectors. Taking precautionary measures, we discovered a huge steel trunk hidden underground," said Kumar. When the trunk was opened they found 14 country made carbines, 10 rifles of different bores, detonators, m-seal and several live cartridges. Much to the CRPF team's surprise, they also found a grenade projector and a highly explosive bomb. "The weapons found seem to be rusted because they might not have been used for some years now," said Kumar.

Pahan was in-charge of PLFI activities in Murhu, Torpa and Khunti blocks from where he collected levies from contractors to fund the outfit's war against the State. A close aide of PLFI top leader Jidan Gudiya, Pahan had succeeded Murhu-Torpa-Khunti area commander Shiv Gudiya around one year ago when he was killed in an encounter. A source said Police had gathered intelligence that Pahan with his men was supposed to come to Kunjla village on April 9 night to kill a villager PLFI considered police informer. "A police team raided the village and encircled Pahan, who was with six armed men, before he could reach his target. He opened fire on policemen when they asked him to surrender. In retaliatory fire Pahan was killed while his men escaped," Police claimed. Police arrested one of the extremists who laid down arms during the gun-battle. A police search party found four pistols and a huge cache of live cartridges at the site later.

The bombs, weighing around 25kg each, were found buried beneath the ground at Pandwa village along a path frequently used by Police and Paramilitary Forces. Confirming the recovery, West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police (SP) Michael Raj said: "Two can bombs, ammunition, materials used to prepare bombs and other items were recovered from Goelkera by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Both the bombs have been defused." A huge cache of ammunition was recovered from Palkot area in Gumla District following an encounter with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres on May 21, reports The Telegraph. Acting on a tip-off that Maoist ‘sub-zonal commander’ Dipakji was camping in the dense forests of Palkot, special teams, comprising State Police personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, were formed to corner the squad from all sides. As the Security Forces (SFs) neared the forests, the Maoists opened fire. The SFs also retaliated, forcing the Maoists to flee, leaving behind a huge quantity of ammunition. "We recovered 514 rounds of 7.62mm bullets, a hand grenade, Naxalite [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] literature, Police uniforms, backpacks and items of daily use from the encounter spot," said Gumla Superintendent of Police (SP) Bheemsen Tuti. Commenting on the civilian killing, Arun Kumar Singh, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Ranchi Range said a team of District Police and Jharkhand Armed Police commandos were reconnoitring the Katkahi area when the Maoists opened fire from atop a small hill. "The civilian was not on the side of the Maoists during the encounter. It seems that a stray bullet from the Maoists side hit him," he added. Police also found one 303 rifle, one 30-06 Springfield and four 315 regular rifles besides over 30 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), several hand grenades, 250 rounds live bullets and other Maoist materials from the site. The Security Force (SF) personnel on July 11 arrested two Maoist supporters carrying cash collected from a contractor in the form of levy to hand over to Maoist leader Ranjit Pal alias Rahul, who was the prime accused in the killing of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Member of Parliament (MP) Sunil Mahato. According to Police, acting on a tip off, led a search operation in the Ghatshila sub-division and intercepted two persons at Chengoda between Ghatshila and Kadaduba, when they were about to enter the jungles to hand over the levy amount of INR 250,000 to Rahul. The subsequent search led the SF personnel to recover the cash, one country-made pistol, three live cartridges and Maoist literature. The SF personnel also seized the motorcycle they were travelling on and two mobile phones. The arrested Maoist supporters were identified as Kalachand Pal and Simanta Pal, both residents of Mahatam village under Ghatshila Police Station limits, he said. A wanted rebel of People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), identified as Bikram Gope alias Barud Gope (35), was arrested from Dhenatoli village under Kolebira Police Station in Simdega District on July 11, reports The Times of India. Barud is said to be close to PLFI founder and chief Dinesh Gope. Two of his aides were also arrested along with Barud when a Police team raided Dhenatoli village where a group of five PLFI rebels were holding a meeting. While two of them managed to escape from the camp, three others were held. Three .315 rifles and a dozens live bullets were recovered from their possession. The Police had been on the lookout for Barud for a long time. He managed to give a slip to the security forces for so long. The Simdega Superintendent of Police said he was wanted in more than 50 cases. "He was involved in the murder of a para teacher in 2014 for which Kolebira MLA Enosh Ekka was sent to jail. Pandu was in the team of Kauleshwari zone regional commander Indal Bhokta. Acting on an anonymous tip-off regarding Pandu’s squad wandering in areas under Hunterganj Police Station on July 25, Chatra SP SK Jha led a search operation with a team of district police forces and Central reserve Police Force (CRPF) 190 battalion on the same night for apprehending the extremists. In the forests near Herenchatwa, the search party came across Pandu who tried to evade them, but was caught. After interrogating the detained extremists, Chatra Police unearthed IEDs planted in the area. Three country-made rifles, a rifle with three magazines, 17 live cartridges, 16 detonators, two pouches, a pithoo and some medicines have also been recovered. In the 30 minute long encounter the first Maoist bullet instantly killed Police driver Dhumul Siwaiya after which SSP Kumar's team retaliated, killing Bundu-Tamar ‘area commander’ Chandan alias Kalika Munda and reportedly injuring two more. A bullet in the crossfire grazed SSP Kumar's right arm while flying shrapnel caused his chest to bleed. A bullet also grazed his bodyguard Md Faizal's left thigh while shards bruised Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) (Operations) Harshpal Singh. Bullets also damaged the SSP's SUV. Commenting on the encounter State Director General of Police (DGP) DK Pandey said "Chandan was part of the infamous Kundan Pahan group. We recovered an AK-47 rifle and six loaded magazines from him."

The joint Security Forces (SFs) comprising District Police teams of Latehar and Garhwa of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh along with Jharkhand Armed Police, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) battalion of CRPF and India Reserve Battalion (IRB) raided the Gotag forests of Latehar and zeroed in on a location from where huge quantity of arms, explosive material, codex wire have been found. Jharkhand Police on December 17 killed a People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI) ‘area commander’, identified as Dinesh Sahu (28), in an encounter, at Bandha village under Tupudana block in Ranchi District, wanted in at least 29 cases in Khunti District, reports The Hindustan Times. Khunti Superintendent of Police (SP) Anish Gupta said “He (Sahu) was wanted in several cases of rape, murder and extortion. Reacting on a tip-off by one of our informers, we found him and shot him dead.” Four of Sahu’s accomplices, however, managed to escape. A massive search operation has been launched to apprehend them, said Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhat Kumar.
