Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and a group of Maoists exchanged fire in Biriguda forest under Boipariguda Police Station limits in Koraput District on January 1, reports The New Indian Express. BSF officials said based on intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of Maoists in the forest, an operation was launched and Maoists were spotted. The exchange of fire continued for one hour. However, the Maoists managed to escape into deep forest and during search of the area; Police recovered two INSAS rifles and explosives. Police also claimed that two Maoists were injured in the exchange of fire.

A CPI-Maoist cadre was killed during an exchange of fire between the Maoists and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Ralegada panchayat (local self government institution) area under Paparmetla Police Station, a cut off area of Balimela reservoir bordering Andhra Pradesh, in Malkangiri District on January 11, reports The Hindu. The body of the Maoist was recovered during the search operation at the spot of encounter on January 12. His identity is yet to be confirmed. The security personnel also recovered two guns, articles of day-to-day use from the spot. Details were awaited as the BSF personnel involved in the operation had not returned back.

Security Force personnel on January 16 arrested two persons from a forest in Kotagarh Police Station area in Kandhamal District bordering Rayagada District following an encounter with the cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), reports The Times of India. Maoist literature, empty self-loading rifle cartridges, torches, towels, kit bags and some medicines were seized from them. Police is yet to share details about the seized items as the combing operation parties had not returned from the forest, where the gun-battle between them and the extremists took place, said Superintendent of Police (SP) (Kandhamal) K V Singh. The arrested were identified as Manoj Kumar Sabat (31), and Dhaneswara Badaseth (38), Police said. "We are verifying their links with Maoists. Most probably they were involved in supplying essential stuff to the radicals," said a Police officer. Police said around a dozen Maoists were present during the encounter, which started around 9 am and lasted for nearly 20 minutes. "No casualty has been reported from either side. We have no information of any Maoist sustaining injuries during the fire exchange," Singh said.

Information gathered from two arrested cadre as well as proof from the camp of the Odisha Maovadi Party (OMP) led by Sabyasachi Panda inside Merikote reserve forest near Salimagochha under Badagada Police Station limits in Ganjam District hints that the outfit now has less than 10 members, reports The Hindu. OMP is a breakaway faction of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist). According to Police sources, Sabyasachi is not able to lure any new members into the OMP. Therefore, he is trying to mobilise cadre from other parts of the State such as Keonjhar. As per the details given by Ganjam Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashis Kumar Singh on February 16 regarding the successful operation on February 15, both the arrested OMP cadre were from Harichandanpur Police Station area of Keonjhar District and in their early 20s. The arrested persons were Bhupati Mahanta (22) from Tangarapada village and Govinda Moharana (24) of Tambahara village. On February 15, Security Forces exchanged fire with OMP cadres in Merikote reserve forest during a combing operation. According to Police, some of the items seized from the camp show that Sabyasachi was also present during the joint operation of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and the Special Operation Group (SOG) on Saturday [February 15],” said the SP. The Merikote reserve forest is located on the border of Ganjam, Kandhamal, and Gajapati Districts.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Mangal Topno (40), was killed and two others were injured, one of them critically, in an exchange of fire with Peoples' Liberation Front of India (PLFI) cadres along Odisha-Jharkhand border at Biramitrapur in Sundergarh District of Odisha on February 26, reports The Times of India. Initially the Maoists opened fire on PLFI members who had gone to Bansjor weekly market in Jharkhand. The exchange of fire lasted for an hour. Police recovered the body from the spot. Sundargarh Police are on high alert after the incident.

A secret Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp operating in forest under Raighar Police Station limits near Chhattisgarh border in Nabarangpur District of south Odisha was neutralised by Security Forces following an exchange of fire along with seizure of explosives and arms, reports The Hindu on March 18. According to Inspector General (IG) of Police, south-west range of Odisha, Yashawant Jethwa; the seized items included eight landmines, three Single Barrel Muzzle Loading (SBML) guns, one 8MM pistol, 70 detonators, seven bundles of wire used to explode Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), five kilogram of gun powder, Maoist uniforms and literature. A solar panel was recovered from the spot hinting that the naxalites have started using solar power for their electronic equipments.

Security Forces (SFs) and Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres exchanged fire at Gudguda forest under Meghapal panchayat (village level local self government institution) of Sambalpur District on April 3, reports The Pioneer. The incident occurred when the Special Operation Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were on a combing operation and suddenly the Maoists fired at the SFs. After 30 minutes of exchange of fire, the Maoists fled from the area. There was also another round of exchange of fire at around 5 pm and it continued for over an hour. Junu Dehuri, a hardcore Maoist and a native of Tamparsingha village, is presently leading the Maoist outfit in the area, in collaboration with some top cadres from Jharkhand.

The other encounter took place at Narayanpatna block in Koraput District in the night of April 13, in which Maoist, identified as Purna Huluka was killed. Based on intelligence reports that a group of Maoists were planning to target civilians and public property during Mahavishub Sankranti festivities in Narayanpatna block, personnel of Koraput District Police and District Voluntary Force started an operation on April 13. The Maoist group was tracked down in the Palaput-Gadraguda forest under the Narayanpatna Police Station limits, which resulted in an exchange of fire. “Purna was killed at the spot while his other naxalite compatriots managed to escape,” said Koraput Superintendent of Police Awinash Kumar. Two country-made guns, one pistol and Maoist material were also seized from the spot of encounter along with the body of the slain Maoist. Purna was a ‘military commander’ of the Srikakulam-Koraput division under Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of the CPI-Maoist organisation, said Police sources. He was active in Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon blocks of Koraput District and had several cases of violence were pending against him, including eight murder cases. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres attacked a Border Security (BSF) camp and triggered an explosion at Bhejangiwada under Kalimela Police Station limits in Malkangiri District, reports The New Indian Express. A group of 60 to 70 heavily-armed Maoists surrounded the camp and fired from different directions in the night of April 14, Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhileswar Singh said. However, nobody was injured in the attack, he added. The Maoists later retreated due to retaliatory fire by the BSF. While leaving the area, the Maoist exploded a low-intensity Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
