Security Forces (SFs) neutralized a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp following an exchange of fire near Lengerimunda village at Chakapad area in Kandhamal District of Odisha on January 7, reports The New Indian Express. An anti-Maoist operation was launched by a joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Volunteer Force (DVF) near the said village. While combing operation was underway, the rebels resorted to heavy firing and hurled grenades.The SFs retaliated following which the Maoists escaped taking advantage of the dense forest cover. While no casualty was reported from either side in the incident, the SFs recovered a detonator, two hand grenades, country-made guns, two magazines, haversacks, black uniforms, medicines, clothes and utensils from the camp.

Security Forces (SFs) recovered a landmine allegedly planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) to target the SFs in Handikhal forest under Chitrakonda block in Malkangiri District of Odisha, reports Sambad on January 10.Acting on a tip-off, Border Security Forces (BSF)troopers had initiated a search operation in the area, later, a landmine weighing five kilograms kept inside a drum was spotted by the SFs. A suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in Nunkhari forest under Mathili Police Station limits in Malkangiri District of Odisha on January 31, reports Outlook. The exchange of fire took place when personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) of the Odisha Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) were carrying out a joint anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] operation in the said forest. The Maoists opened fire at the SF personnel and in ensued gun-battle the Maoist was killed. A country-made gun, a pistol and huge quantities of ammunition, explosives and other articles were recovered from the area. The slain Maoist’s identity is yet to be ascertained.

Security Forces (SFs) recovered two 12 bore guns and items including three radio sets, solar light and other camp materials following an exchange of fire with the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres from Bender 1 Reserve Forest area under Belpada Police Station limits in Bolangir District of Odisha on February 1, reports United News of India. Acting on specific information about the movement of 10 to 15 armed Maoists in the Bender Reserve forest area and their plan to carry out attacks, an operation was launched in the area by a composite team of Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF). The operational team came under heavy fire from the CPI-Maoist cadres which led to the exchange of fire. While the Maoists managed to escape taking cover of the terrain, the SFs recovered the guns and other materials from the Maoist camp.

A team of District Voluntary Force (DVF) along with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) recovered an explosive dump belonging to Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] operation near Sureshi village in Koraput District of Odisha, reports ANI on February 6. “The operation was carried out on February 3 and 4 in the reserve forest areas of Kendaborigi, Mangalpur, and Atmakonda under the Narayanpatna Police Station. The explosive dump was recovered near Sureshi village after cordoning the area,” Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP) V. Guntualli said in a press release. Six single barrel muzzle loading (SBML) guns, 20 aluminum tiffin boxes having the capacity of containing 500 gm explosives, 3 tiffin bombs, 2 Claymore mines, 50 gelatin sticks, 205 iron pipes for SBML guns, 3-kilogram iron splinters, one whistle chord, and 3 black belts were recovered from the Maoist dump.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres blocked the Raigarh-Hatigaon main road by setting up trees and put-up posters and banners near Hatigaon village under Raighar block (administrative unit) in Nabarangpur District of Odisha on March 17, reports The Pioneer. The posters and banners raised 11 points of demands relating to deforestation in the area and the Central Government's forest laws among others. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in Jhanj reserve forest near Ganjaguda village under Padampur Police limits in Bargarh District of Odisha on June 11 (today) morning, reports Ommcom News. Director General of Police (DGP), Abhay, said that a group of Maoists started firing at a joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) during a combing operation in the area early in the morning. The SFs retaliated and killed one Maoist who was in uniform. An AK-47 rifle, three AK-47 magazines, live ammunition, and other camping materials were recovered from the spot. DGP, Abhay, further said that as the AK-47 rifle is used by senior cadres in the Maoist organisation, the deceased is suspected to be a senior cadre Maoist. Efforts are underway to establish his identity. He also appealed to the Maoists to lay down their arms, surrender, and join the national mainstream. Odisha Government has a very generous rehabilitation policy for surrendered Maoists which they should use, added the DGP.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) attempt to target Security Force (SF) personnel have been foiled by the 9th Battalion Border Security Force (BSF) in Malkangiri District of Odisha on June 13 (today), reports Kalinga TV. Malkangiri 9th Battalion BSF team was on a routine combing operation between Chintalanu and Mandapalli villages, when the BSF personnel found three tiffin bombs planted under a tree. Police suspect Maoists had planted the landmine to target SF personnel patrolling the area. The combing operation has been intensified to look out for Maoists, who may be hiding in the area.

Security Forces (SFs) recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a forest near Kulabeda village in Malkangiri District in Odisha following an exchange of fire with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres on June 15, reports The New Indian Express. Acting on intelligence inputs about a gathering of armed CPI-Maoist cadres for carrying out subversive activities, a search and area domination operation was launched by SFs in bordering areas of Malkangiri and Koraput Districts in Odisha. When the combing operation was on in the jungle area near Kulabeda village, there was sudden unprovoked firing from the CPI-Maoist cadres. The SFs retaliated and started controlled firing after warning and appealing to the Maoists. However, the Maoists managed to flee the area taking advantage of the jungle and hilly terrain. After the exchange of fire, a search operation was conducted during which the arms and ammunition were seized from the area, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishikesh D Khilari. SFs recovered one INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle, 19 rounds of 5.56x39 mm ammunition, 15 rounds of 7.62x45 mm ammunition, one AK-47 magazine, two INSAS magazine, four Maoist kit bags, two magazine pouchs, one digital camera, detonators, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) making materials, power banks, medicine and Maoist literature from the site.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel neutralised a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) hideout at Niyamgiri hills near Tadijhola forest under Lanjigarh Block (administrative unit) in Kalahandi District of Odisha on August 7, and seized cache of explosives, arms and ammunition and other daily use articles from the spot, reports Odisha TV. Based on intelligence reports, CRPF personnel launched a combing operation in the forest and seized huge number of explosives, two pistols, 35 gelatin sticks, 50 detonators, batteries, electric wire, ropes, urea tiffins, 13 live bullets and other incriminating materials with the help of sniffing dogs. “A banner of CPI Maoist Baghuna Division was also recovered from the spot. It is suspected that the group could have hidden the arms and ammunition for any ambush,” said Mitu Roy, a CRPF official, adding that further investigation into the same is underway. According to sources, the Maoists were staying in the area for the last few days and were planning for a big ambush on Independence Day and ‘Kranti Divas’, which was foiled by the security personnel. The security personnel raided the area and seized the arms and ammunition before the Maoists could carry out their plan. However, the Maoists fled the spot.

Odisha, Director General of Police (DGP), Abhay said, a Maoist of his cadre has neither been arrested nor neutralised in the last 20 years in Odisha and described his arrest as a great achievement of Odisha Police. Dubasi, a resident of Muttarasi Chetla village in Medak District of Telangana, was a member of the Andhra Odisha Special Zone Military Commission. The Security personnel have seized an INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle, 10 rounds of ammunition, a mobile phone, one radio, earphones, Amazon kindle, INR 35,000 in cash and other articles from his possessions. During interrogation, Dubasi revealed that he joined the Maoist organisation in 1987 in the Indrapuriyal Zonal Committee in Telangana as a party member. He was promoted to the rank of ‘special zonal committee member’ in 2003 and joined the AOBSZC in 2004. In 2010 he joined the ‘state military commission’ and continued there till date. The DGP said Dubasi was involved in many heinous Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] related violence including the 2009 Damanjodi Exchange of Fire (EOF) in which 10 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel were killed, Jodamba EOF in 2018, Doraguda EOF in 2020, Theegalmetta EOF in 2021, Pebbampalli EOF in 2021, Januguda Ambush in 2012 in which four BSF personnel were killed and in Govindapalli land mine blast in 2010 in which 11 Police personnel died. He was involved in two criminal cases in the Koraput District, 18 cases in Malkangiri District, 32 criminal cases in Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh and 24 criminal cases in Telangana.

The Rourkela Police arrested three criminals, identified as Banti alias Basista Mohanty, Jangyasi Swain alias Rony and Amit Kumar Sahoo, who were running a major extortion racket at the behest of a hardcore cadre of the Peoples' Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), operating from across border in Jharkhand, in Rourkela in Sundargarh District of Odisha on October 11, reports Odisha TV. The trio mostly targeted industrialists and other businessmen in the Civil Township area in Rourkela and other parts of the Steel City. Police said three 7mm pistols and around 55 rounds of ammunition including few of Self Loading Rifle (SLR) automatic weapons and some Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were recovered from the criminals. Rourkela, superintendent of Police (SP), Mukesh Bhamoo said that around 6-7 cases had been registered against Banti who confessed to have been working for PLFI cadre Arjun Rana. All the three arrestees were working on the instruction of Rana who mostly operates from Jharkhand. He used to hire criminals to run his extortion and other organised crime syndicate in Rourkela. “Most of these criminals work in small groups. Each of them has specific roles. While some would conduct recee, the others would threaten businessman by firing or hurling bombs to extort money,” said SP, Bhamoo, adding that the criminals used to smuggle Ganja to Jharkhand from Odisha. Three Community Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres including two women cadres have been shot dead in an encounter during a gunfight near Tulsi Pahad (Hill) under Maithili Police limits in Malkangiri District of Odisha on October 12 (today), reports Kalinga TV. Reportedly, a combing operation by a joint team of District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) had been launched following which the firing exchange took place, and as a result, two women Maoists along with one male Maoist cadre were killed, while others managed to escape from the area. A SOG trooper also sustained injuries during the exchange of bullets. The combing operation was launched by a joint team comprising Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Volunteer Force (DVF) Malkangiri after receipt of credible inputs regarding presence of the Maoists on October 14, 2021. However, an exchange of fire broke out between the SFs and Left-Wing Extremists (LWEs) on October 15. Taking advantage of the hilly terrain, the Maoists managed to escape. “After a thorough search, several explosives and other Maoist articles including detonators, battery, Maoist kit bags and uniforms have been seized from the spot,” the Malkangiri Police said in a press release. The slain Maoist is identified as Shankar, a key member of the ‘Bolangir-Bargarh-Mahasamund division (BBM) Division' of CPI-Maoist. A Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), some ammunition and other articles were recovered from the encounter spot. As per reports, a team of the Bolangir Police along with the District Voluntary Force (DVF) launched a combing operation after getting information regarding the presence of some Maoists in the area. Director General of Police (DGP), Abhay on November 28 said the ultras initially opened fire at the security personnel and in the retaliatory fire Shankar was killed. “As the operation was carried out in night, we suspect that there were six to eight Maoists, who managed to escape from the spot. The joint operation comprised personnel of the District Voluntary Force (DVF), Special Operation Group (SOG) and Border Security Force (BSF) and was carried out in the erstwhile cut-off area (Swabhiman Anchal) under Jodambo Police limits. The operation was carried out following the establishment of a new BSF company operating base (COB) at Ghanabeda, which received a tip-off on a Maoist dump near Nadmenjeri village. After receiving the input, a joint team was formed which carried out extensive searches and recovered the dump in a forested area of Nadmenjeri under Jantri Gram Panchayat under Jodambo Police limits, Superintendent of Police (SP) Prahlad Meena said. As many as five IEDs, three metres of Codex wire, three detonators, two batteries, iron scrap, Maoist literature, polythene sheets, lithium button cells, and several other Maoist materials were seized. “It is suspected that the explosives and other articles were intended to be target civilians and security forces,” Meena said.
