A suspected assassin reportedly injured in the incident in which Armed Police Force Inspector General Krishna Mohan Shrestha was shot dead in Kathmandu Valley, on January 26, has been arrested and investigations are on, when reports last came in. A group of four suspected Maoist insurgents shot dead Shrestha. His wife and body guard, too, were killed in the incident. Offering condolences, Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand said, "His death is a cruel blow to the nation. His dedication will be an inspiration to others to work for the protection of the nation and democracy." The Defence Ministry said in a statement, "The terrorist nature of the Maoists [has] been exposed at home and abroad by the incident, even as they call for a peaceful resolution of the crisis through dialogue."

Quoting Defense Ministry sources, media reports have indicated that 22 Maoist insurgents were killed in continuing security operations in seven districts on November 25 and November 26. Eight Maoists were killed by security force (SF) personnel at three different places in the Dang district and six Maoists were killed in Sindhupalchowk district. Insurgents were also killed in separate encounters in the Bara, Dailekh, Okhaldungha, Kailali and Bardia districts. An unspecified number of .303 rifles, magazines, bullets, socket and pressure cooker bombs, detonators and explosives were recovered from the operation sites.

Media reports of December 1 quoting Defence Ministry sources claimed that security forces (SFs) have killed 25 Maoist insurgents in 11 districts during the past 48 hours of security operations across the country. In separate encounters, four Maoists each were killed in the Sunsari and Syangja districts, three in Siraha district, two each in Sindhupalchowk, Tahanu, Chitwan, Baglung and Panchthar districts and one each in the Kailali, Bara, Okhaldungha and Ramechhap districts. The SFs have also reportedly recovered an unspecified quantity of rifles, ammunition, grenades and detonators from the encounter sites.

The SFs have reportedly recovered two SLR’s, magazines, plastic magazines, pressure cooker bombs, socket bombs and detonators from the encounter sites. Separately, in Dailekh district, one insurgent surrendered to the SFs with a plastic bomb on December 3.

Socket bombs, detonators, a gun, plastic grenades and ambush materials were recovered from the incident sites. In a separate incident, six SF personnel were injured in a Maoist ambush at Hariwon in the Sarlahi district on December 18. Elsewhere, six civilians were injured in different clashes with the insurgents.

Reports from Mahendranagar said that on December 22, a soldier was killed in a Maoist attack at Bhanu Chowk, while three civilians were injured in a Maoist ambush at Nuwakot. Elsewhere, insurgents have used bombs to cause extensive damage to the Ashok Steel Industry at Bhawanipur in the Bara district.
