Terming the achievement as "commendable", the RNA eastern divisional headquarters, Itahari, stated that they had inflicted maximum damage on the Maoists during a clash in Morang district recently, where 22 insurgents were killed. A statement released by the RNA’s Department of Public Relations said thousands of insurgents attacked the base on April 7-evening and the fighting continued till the next day. It also said the RNA had recovered bodies of 50 insurgents and 31 guns from the incident site. While the RNA did not disclose fatalities on the troops’ side, it quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the number of slain Maoists could be much higher. This is reportedly the first major offensive attempted by the insurgents against the RNA after the February 1 royal takeover.

A statement issued from the RNA Pristana headquarters said the troops attacked a Maoist base at Bankhet and engaged in a three-hour long battle with the insurgents. Further, it said that around 41 dead bodies of the Maoists have been recovered including that of ‘Bheri-Karnali Brigade commander’, Jit, from the incident site. Over 700 Maoists were reportedly involved in the attack and they have reportedly shot at the RNA helicopter used for the raid, without causing much damage. However, there are conflicting reports on the fatalities as some media reports indicated that between 40-50 insurgents have died. Fatalities, if any, on the RNA’s side have not been reported thus far.

Maoists have claimed that they had captured a large amount of arms from the SFs, including one SLR, one thousand rounds of bullets, six magazines, four grenades and two shells of two-inch mortar from the incident site. The slain insurgents were identified as ‘assistant platoon commanders’ Tshiring and Ramesh and ‘section commander’ Hunkar. This is the second clash between the two sides after the three month unilateral cease-fire announced by the Maoists on September 3.

In the first incident of its kind since the Maoist cease-fire declaration, six insurgents were killed during clashes with the security forces (SFs) at Bahadurpur in the Palpa district on September 24. Chief of the RNA battalion in Butwal town, Narendra Bahadur Rawal, stated that a team of SF personnel on regular patrol were attacked by the insurgents and in the retaliatory firing, the Maoists were killed. Six Maoists were arrested following the attack.
