The Dawn has reported that police officials have raided several seminaries in Punjab and picked up about three dozen suspects in connection with the assassination attempt on President Musharraf. The raids were carried out on seminaries at Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha and Bahawalnagar. Sources said that the raids were conducted on information received from some suspects already in the custody. Two seminaries, belonging to the Jamaat-e-Ullema Islam (JUI), were raided in Lahore on January 10. Seventeen people were arrested in three raids in Sargodha and seven suspects were arrested during a midnight operation in Faisalabad.

On January 11, police officials reportedly arrested a local intelligence official, Muhammad Naeem, for allegedly tipping off the two suicide bombers who tried to crash their explosive laden vehicles into President Musharraf’s convoy at Rawalpindi on December 25, 2003. Naeem, an official of the Islamabad Special Branch who was detailed for Musharraf’s security at the Convention Centre, where he addressed a meeting on science and technology on December 25, allegedly tipped off the suicide bomber regarding the timing of the departure of the Presidential convoy, on his cell phone. Special forces also raided a mosque in Lahore and detained 10 persons believed to be activists of a banned terrorist outfit after the arrest of the intelligence official. A Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist was also taken into custody in Bahawalpur in connection with the assassination attempt.

Maulana Ismail Faiz, head of the Darul Uloom Jamia Madina, was arrested consequent to information that some wanted terrorists were hiding in the seminary, a senior police personnel who took part in the raid told The Nation. Lahore and Islamabad Police jointly raided a location near Thokhar Niaz Baig in Lahore and arrested Sial who had reportedly arrived from Britain recently. Maulana Azam Tariq, leader of the outlawed Sunni group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) and Member of National Assembly, was assassinated along with four others in Islamabad on October 6, 2003. According to Daily Times, the Punjab and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) police wanted Sial in a number of sectarian cases.

Two terrorists of the outlawed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), including a suspect in the abduction cum murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, were arrested in Lahore on April 16. Malik Tasaddaq was arrested on suspicion of involvement in Pearl’s killing, Punjab Inspector General Police Saadatullah Khan said in a statement. The Lahore Police is reported to have arrested, on December 20, at least six associates of the Libyan Al Qaeda operative, Abu Al-Faraj, who carries a Rupees 250 million bounty on his head for his suspected involvement in the two assassination attempts on President Pervez Musharraf in 2003. While four of them were identified as Malik Tahseen alias Abdul Jabbar Alvi, Amer Maqsood alias Abu Haroon, Mahmood Ahmad and Sajjad Haider, the identity of two others have been withheld thus far. Choudhury Shafqat Ahmed of the Lahore Police said that Tahseen belonged to two banned Sunni outfits, the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), and had secured training in Afghanistan several years ago.

The gang had allegedly planned to bomb the American Consulate in Lahore.
