The Crime Investigation Department of Karachi Police raided a house in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area on February 16 and arrested three suspected suicide bombers, identified as Muhammad Shahid, Muhammad Farhan and Ghani Subhan, Daily Times reported. The police also seized three hand grenades, two pistols, one AK-47 assault rifle and a suicide jacket from their possession. Police said that the three suspects belonged to a group headed by al Qaeda leader Qari Zafar and they had been especially sent to Karachi from Wana in South Waziristan to carry out terrorist activities and suicide attacks. The police claimed that the bombers’ first target was Expo 2006, but they changed their plan because of tight security at the venue. The police added that the men then planned to attack Ashura processions in the city, but security agencies tightened security and foiled their plan yet again following intelligence reports that a group of suicide attackers was heading towards Karachi from Dera Ismail Khan. Fayyaz Khan of the Karachi Police said that Shahid and Farhan belonged to Hyderabad while Ghani Subhan was from Wana. Police also recovered a video disc in which an Arabic speaking man explains how to prepare a suicide bomber and how to inflict the maximum number of casualties. "They had plans to carry out attacks in Karachi and Jehlum in Punjab province," Khan said.

Police said on June 5 that they had arrested two suspected militants wanted in the 2002 abduction-cum-murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl, according to Daily Times. Attaur Rehman and Faisal Bhatti were arrested on June 4 in Kashmor, a town northeast of Karachi (capital of Sindh province), said Saghir Mugheri, an area police officer. However, a lawyer for the duo’s families said they were arrested by security agencies in 2003 and have been secretly held in custody since then. Mugheri said both men were members of the outlawed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ). An unnamed police officer investigating Pearl’s case said Rehman is suspected of leading the gang that abducted Daniel Pearl in Karachi in 2002. Rehman, also known as Naim Bukhari, supervised the reporter’s detention in a shack for several days before he was killed, said the officer. He added that both suspects were also involved in the 1998 murder of two Iranian engineers in Karachi, the killing of two Shiite Muslim lawyers in 2000, and an unsuccessful attempt to release a fellow militant from a prison van in 1998 that left two guards dead. Mugheri informed that police arrested the two militants in a car traveling towards Balochistan and weapons and explosives were found in the vehicle.

Intelligence agencies have foiled a plot to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf by arresting some al Qaeda terrorists from Karachi’s Malir area, and seizing a large amount of ammunition from their possession, Daily Times reported. Sources said that al Qaeda operatives told interrogators that they were plotting to kill Pervez Musharraf during his next trip to Karachi. The terrorists had planned to blow up the entire bridge on Drig Road at the precise moment when Musharraf’s convoy was to reach there while coming from the airport to Shahrah-e-Faisal, sources said, adding that two more attacks were planned in case Musharraf survived the first one. The terrorists also told interrogators that their plans would be carried out despite their arrest as the group had been divided into smaller groups to execute their tasks.
