Daily Times reports that a fresh wave of sectarian violence in the city has claimed the lives of four persons, including three lawyers on January 25. In the first incident, unidentified men shot dead three members of the Shia Lawyers’ Forum on Maulana Din Muhammad Wafai Road of Karachi. Police say the victims, identified as Badar Munir Jaffrey, his son Gauhar Shakeel Jaffrey, nephew Kafil Ahmad Jaffrey and their relative Babar Ali Jaffrey, were shot at when they were returning from the city court in a car. Everyone except Babar died on the spot.

According to media reports this backlash came after a foiled attack on MQM-organised Mushaira (poetry recital) on March 25, 2012, where Police killed an armed assailant, later identified as a worker of the Awami National Party (ANP).

People took to the streets after unidentified assailants shot dead Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Hasan Soomro. Nabeel Gabool, member of National Assembly from Lyari, said Soomro was standing at Aath Chowk when the unidentified assailants opened fire on him. A suicide bomber targeted a senior Police Officer, Superintendent of Police (SP) Anwar Ahmed Khan, said to be a leading name in the crackdown on militants, killing four passers-by and injuring 17 others in the Malir area of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh on April 5, reports Dawn. According to Police, SP Anwar Ahmed Khan was going to the District Courts, Malir, in a convoy of five vehicles for a meeting when the suicide bomber blew himself up at the T-junction of Jinnah Avenue and Sharea Faisal in Malir Halt. Three of the dead were identified as Lal Badshah (50), Ata Muhammad (60), and Adeel Ismail (30). The identity of the 60-year-old man could not be ascertained. Three City Wards and Police constable Ayub posted on the SP’s security were among the injured. Commonly known as Rao Anwar, SP Khan is among the few surviving officers who had played an active role in the Karachi operation during the 1990s.

Six persons, including three PPP and a PSF activist, were killed in the ongoing wave of target and sectarian killings in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh on April 6, reports Daily Times. Tension engulfed several areas of Orangi Town after four assailants, riding two motorbikes, opened fire at a shop in Urdu Chowk of Orangi Town. Four PPP workers, Farhan alias Guddu, Nafees Siddiqui alias Munno Bihari, Umer Hayat and Rana Faraz – received bullet injuries and were moved to hospital. Farhan, Nafees and Hayat succumbed to the injuries later. The killings triggered violence in Orangi Town’s sectors 10, 14 and 15, Bismillah Colony, Faqeer Colony, Urdu Chowk and its surrounding areas. Some armed men also resorted to aerial firing, forcing markets to shut down. Carrying the body of Farhan, scores of PPP workers marched on Shaheen Complex and tried to reach the Chief Minister’s House in the ‘red zone’. The blasts came a day after the visit of Syedi Mufaddal Bhaisaheb Saifuddin, designated successor of Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin. A large number of the community’s members from across the country and India are visiting Karachi on the occasion. “Six of the dead belong to the Dawoodi Bohra community, while the seventh is an ice cream vendor belonging to Rahimyar Khan District of Punjab,” a doctor at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said. The first blast was huge and the second of a lower intensity, an eye witness Shabbir Husain said. “The first explosion was of a motorcycle rigged with explosives. A few minutes later, another blast took place beneath a tree in a garbage pile,” Karachi West Investigation Superintendent of Police (SP) Noman Siddiqui said. “The motorcycle carrying about 3.5kilogram of explosives was detonated by remote control,” an official of the bomb disposal unit said. The second blast was caused by an improvised explosive device containing 500 grams of explosives.

Member of National Assembly (MNA) Nafeesa Shah of PPP was scheduled to address the meeting. Sukkur Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Doctor Ameer Shaikh said the incident took place because of an enmity between two groups of Janwari community. However, MNA Nafeesa Shah told reporters that the attack was pre-planned and carried out with some political motives. Two Policemen Maroof and Jamshed were also wounded. Abdeen was abducted on August 13, 2012 from Clifton, and the abductors had demanded PKR 200 million as ransom for his release. CPLC Chief Ahmed Chinoy informed that the negotiations between the family and the kidnappers were finalised at PKR17 million as ransom after which the Police managed to trace the location of the kidnappers after the hectic efforts of 64 days. He disclosed that the abductors used to call the family from different localities, including Waziristan, Peshawar and its neighbouring areas.

Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kamal Khan of Quaidabad Division said that ANP Sherpao Colony ward President Mohammad Saleem, party activists Niaz Yusufzai, Mohammad Fahim, Mohammad Arif and Abid Hazarvi were sitting outside PCO when six gunmen on three motorcycles arrived at the scene and fired at all five of the men before fleeing. More than 15 empty shells of 9mm bullets were found at the scene of the crime. Investigators suspected that the TTP was behind the attack as the ANP leadership had been receiving death threats from the militant outfit.
