Approximately 30 persons supporting the anti-Maoist campaign were injured in the attack. An unspecified number of villagers have been taken hostage by the Maoists. Sources said that at least 700 tribals, mostly Sangham members from the Maoist strongholds, accompanied the armed squads that led the operation. Further, while retreating from the village, the Maoists blasted a private bus, which was on its way from Jagadalpur to Basaguda, near Timmapur. Two separate jirgas (councils) were held in Mir Ali and Mardan. In Mir Ali, clerics asked the army to leave North Waziristan and guard the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The clerics also denounced a ban on the display of weapons in North Waziristan. Maulana Abdur Rehman told the Mir Ali jirga that carrying weapons was a key element of tribal traditions and tribal people could not accept the ban. "We have feuds. Living in the tribal areas without weapons is impossible," said Rehman, who recently surrendered after the Government declared him "wanted". The participants demanded the removal of army from check-posts on roadside throughout North Waziristan. Tribal militant ‘commander’ Baitullah Mehsud also demanded army’s withdrawal from Waziristan. "It is part of our deal with the government that forces will be withdrawn," he said while making telephone calls to newspaper offices in Peshawar from an undisclosed location.

The bullet-ridden body of senior tribal cleric Maulana Janat Mir was found on May 1, nine days after his abduction by suspected Taliban militants from Mir Ali in North Waziristan. Mir, a pro-government cleric, was reportedly on a hit-list circulated by the Taliban some six months ago warning him and 27 others against "spying" on the militants for the Government, a security official told Daily Times. Local residents said pictures showing the cleric in meetings with top military generals were put on his chest to verify his "contacts with anti-Taliban forces". A message left on the body said: "Don’t think we have killed an innocent and aged cleric. We will soon release a CD to prove his guilt and his confession to his crimes,"

The Communist Party of India (Maoist) on June 10 condemned the Orissa Government's order banning it in the State along with seven other pro-Maoist organisations, The Hindu reported. The party announced that it would organise a countrywide road blockade on June 14 and 15 to protest the proscription and the ‘ongoing suppression of people's voices' through the Government-supported Salwa Judum programme in the State of Chhattisgarh. "The ban is a brutal assault on the democratic rights of the people," ‘secretary’ of the party's ‘State Committee’, Sunil, said in a two-page statement. Stating that the Naveen Patnaik Government had been treating CPI-Maoist and organisations such as the Chasi Mulia Samiti as ‘virtually unlawful’ outfits since long, the party said the ban had exposed the ‘real character’ of the ‘so-called democratic system of the country.'

On December 16, the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, in an interview with the IANS, said that he is open to peace talks with Maoists if they shun violence. Singh said, "Leftist insurgency is an inter-state problem as the militants have terror network in 13 states and peace talks by any single state will not solve the problem. But Chhattisgarh will not mind holding discussion with the rebels if they express keen interest to bring peace and return to democracy." The Chief Minister, however, added, "It's solely the responsibility of the Indian government to engage in peace dialogue with the Maoists rather than individual states getting involved." He further said, "I always prefer dialogue but it is necessary that rebels too should come to the discussion table with a lust for peace." Speaking on the vigilante programme Salwa Judum, he noted, "Salwa Judum is on the right track and the movement has cornered the Maoists in some 40,000 sq km of hilly terrain of Bastar region. Salwa Judum is a spontaneous outburst of tribals who have suffered Maoist atrocities for three decades. It will finish them off."
