Police achieved a major breakthrough by unearthing the escape plot of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) ‘commander’ Naveed Jhat and arrested 16 militants and their Over Ground Workers (OGWs) in this connection on February 8, reports Daily Excelsior. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the escape of LeT commander from SMHS Hospital, picked up 16 militants and OGWs from South Kashmir and Budgam. Ten militants and OGWs were picked up from South Kashmir while six suspected were rounded up from Budgam. However, Additional Director General Police (ADGP) and Inspector General (IG) Kashmir, Muneer Khan told a press conference in Srinagar that four persons including militants and OGWs were arrested in connection with the escape of Naveed. “To expedite the investigations, a SIT has been constituted by DIG CKR, Srinagar. However, sources said that Rather has joined Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM). Khan said that from the possession of Shakeel Ahmad Bhat and Tika Khan a pistol each with ammunitions has been recovered. “During the course of investigation it was established that Hilal, Shakeel, Tika Khan were masterminds in the whole conspiracy. Tika Khan has also been a frequent visitor to Central Jail Srinagar and was in contact with Naveed Jhat. He visited Central Jail on different pretexts. Moreover, Naveed and rest of the gang were in communication using mobile devices during the conspiring stage”, he said. He said that the escape of Naveed was hatched some months back from Central Jail and LeT and HM were actively involved in it. “However, the final planning to effect the conspiracy was done few weeks back at the residence of Tika Khan along with Hilal Ahmad Rather, Syed Tajamul, Shakeel Ahmad Bhat and Mohammad Shafi Wani”, he said.

Meanwhile, sources said that the Police is receiving inputs about presence of militants from various area of Srinagar city. And sources said that in this connection one person was arrested from Dalgate area of Srinagar on February 18. However, it was not immediately known whether the person is a militant or Over Ground Worker (OGW). He is being questioned by the SFs. Sources said that of late militants have established a strong network in Srinagar and they are trying to conduct strikes in the city. However, the SFs are continuously putting pressure on them but so far they have not been able to break their network. Earlier, there was no presence of militants in Srinagar and they were using it as transit only. But of late as the pressure on militants in South and North Kashmir increased they have established network in Srinagar especially old city area. The Police on May 9 arrested four Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, identified Suhaib Farooq Akhoon alias Abu Huraira, Mohsin Mushtaq Bhat alias Shera, Ajaz Ahmad Gojri alias Abu Umair, and Bilal Ahmad Najar alias Abu Sameer, and six other Over Ground Workers (OGWs) for their involvement in the killing of three civilians on April 30 in Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. The preliminary interrogation of four militants has revealed that LeT handlers in Pakistan had instructed them to create an unpleasant atmosphere in North Kashmir by killing as many civilians who are friendly with the Indian government or the Security Forces (SFs). The probe has also revealed that LeT was involved the heinous killing of three civilians. Militants Suhaib Akhoon, Mohsin Mushtaq and Ajaz Gojri opened fire using AK series rifles whereas Bilal Najar used a China-made pistol to commit the murder of three civilians, said Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police, North Kashmir range Dr Sunil Gupta. The SFs recovered two AK series rifles, two China-made pistols, four hand grenades, 50 rounds of AK ammunition, four AK magazines, and two pistol magazines, from the arrested militants and their hideouts. One kingpin of the module—Nadeem Ahmad Dar alias Abu Osama, along with Suhaib Akhoon had been the main motivators and ‘commanders’ of this group, said DIG.With the arrest of these four militants, the SFs and Police were able to solve the cases of two grenade attacks on Police Station Baramulla District by arresting—Naseer Ahmad Mochi, who was provided with grenades on two occasions by Ajaz Ahmad Gojri and he had subsequently lobbed them on Police Station Baramulla on December 2, 2017 and January 22, 2018 in which two Policemen had sustained injuries, said DIG.
